Heck, to get to .500, all this team needs are upgrades at CF, DH, SS, and 2 more relief pitchers.

The Royals needed and still need to be shopping pretty much everyone older than 27

good or bad, for value, since even the good players older than 27 (e.g., Meche [injured, unfortuneatley, DDJ, etc.( guys aren’t going be any more valuable than they are now, and won’t be good and/or under contract when the team is ready to contend.

Whichever one will be cheaper next season

I prefer Buck, since he’s a better hitter (yup, even this season after Olivo’s month-of-his-career), and Olivo’s superior arm is almost completely negated by him being historically one of the worst catchers at blocking pitches (this has been shown, by the way)… but whatever.

worse defensively

He isn’t "a lot’ younger, he’s 18 months younger than BUck.

by WhenWillDavidGlassDie? on Aug 1, 2009 4:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

to expand on that

the “correction” was to have Jacobs, a guy whose value is his power, hit to the opposite field, which dilutes his power.

The stupidity of that idea should be obvious, and the fact that Jacobs went ice cold in June while trying to hit balls to left field should tell you that Kevin Seitzer’s advice didn’t work

Enough is Enough - Fire Trey Hillman

by BHWick on Aug 1, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

It might also be that Jacobs is is just varying down from his not-very-good anyway self

and maybe, just maybe, people should have listened when others pointed out that a) Jacobs sucked before this season, and b) that superior Al pitching would make him eevn suckier.

Enough is Enough - Fire Trey Hillman

by BHWick on Aug 1, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Leo Nunez's fanclub only showed up after we traded him

Jacobs hasn’t had a good year, and the idiotic managing and coaching has fucked his year up even more.

Jacobs didn’t put himself in the cleanup spot against Danks. Jacobs didn’t decide to start diluting his value and doing something foreign to him during his worst slump ever. That’s on Hillman and Seitzer.

This team’s offense sucked last year, and we had a good relief core. Trading a reliever to get someone who could improve the offense makes sense.

Enough is Enough - Fire Trey Hillman

by BHWick on Aug 1, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

not when you take into account other alternatives and money

by Matt Klaassen on Aug 1, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Does it matter?

I love the double standard of

“Jacobs was dueeeee to struggle because the AL is so awesome”
and
“Nunez is now awesome in the NL, proving that we shouldn’t have dealt him”

Apparently the AL/NL gap only applies to hitters that you dislike, and not pitchers.

Oh yeah, Nunez has a higher WAR… and it’s LOWER than his WAR in 2008. Despite Nunez having as many innings in 2009 as 2008.

by BHWick on Aug 1, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

i have no idea where you're going with this

but you do seem to be emphatic in your assertions…………………how has his value gone down?

by Fernando Vina School of Linguistics on Aug 1, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Nunez's WAR in 2008 was 0.5

and check it out for 2009.

Nunez is only good if you compare his performance in a better league for pitchers in a better park for pitchers and in a different environment to the performance of the rest of the pen.

But as we can see with Juan Cruz, just because you pitch well in the NL doesn’t mean that you’re going to pitch well in the AL.

Enough is Enough - Fire Trey Hillman

by BHWick on Aug 1, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

but he's already pitched well in the AL?

We would be a better team with Nunez instead of Jacobs

We would be just as good with our pitchers batting than with Jacobs hitting cleanup

by GobbleforCyoung on Aug 1, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Our pitchers wouldn’t put up a .181/.274/.245 line

So, Seitz gets blamed for Jacobs down year

but doesn’t get credit for Callaspo, Teahen, and Butler having good years?

I don’t know whether he’s good or not, or how he interacts with players individually or as a group.

But that’s because I’m not ready to give credit or blame to coaches on the major league level in general without stronger evidence than we have.

Jacobs is better than he’s hitting now — but, he never been more than a slightly-above average hitter, and that was in the NL.

For a while, during Interleague Play, the Royals had Jacobs try to shorten his swing and go to the opposite field more often. But now he’s back to, as Hillman put it, “What got him here.”

Interleague play would be June, where Jacobs had 2 RBI, hit .189, and got on base at a .268 clip with a .552 OPS

July was a fucking bizarre month for Jacobs hitting, with a 160/208/400 line, an uptick from June in the sense that Jacobs got some big hits, but 4 of his 8 hits were HRs.

He’s still in a slump and not in a good position to get into a groove for some reasons that are obvious.

Along with teammate starting pitcher Tim Lincecum, who is half Pinoy, Chris Aguila formerly of the New York Mets, and Jason Bartlett of the Tampa Bay Rays, there aren’t a lot of Filipinos playing in America’s past time.

And what makes it even more memorable is that Bartlett is half-Filipino. "My mom is Filipino. I’m 50 percent," proudly says Bartlett.

The 29-year-old Northern California native has been playing in the Major Leagues for the past four years. Like San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum and Gino Espineli not many people know that Bartlett is Filipino.

nah

this season is over and the 2010 and this team can’t contend in 2010 either. Moore has to go…he just does.

I get to watch Beckham hit .300 and Hosmer struggle to hit .220 in A ball. It’s awesome seeing Wieters handle a MLB pitching staff and also hit much better than our shit catchers.

I just want this team to lose lose lose, fire Moore and Hillman, draft Strasburg and we’ll start next year fresh. I have trouble rooting for the Mets, but this team is just pathetic to watch and that may be only because a fucking retart Moore is running the team when he should be playing with blocks, learning how to count to 10 and trying not to pee pee in his pants in kindergarten

Yep, more examples as to why this is my least favorite Royals team of all time

Like I said at the beginning of the year, like I said when we were 18-11 and like I said after Dayton Moore sat on his fucking hands at the trade deadline: this team is GENETICALLY FLAWED. It is COMPOSED POORLY. We have THREE CATCHERS and started the season with FIVE FIRST BASEMEN. We started the season with HORACIO RAMIREZ and SIDNEY PONSON in our rotation.

FA 1st basemen for 2010

Russell Branyan SEA (34 in 2010, LHB, .264/.363/.544)
Carlos Delgado NYM (38, LHB, .298/.393/.521)
Jason Giambi OAK (39, option year, LHB, .193/.332/.364)
Ross Gload * FLA (34, option year, LHB, .281/.359/.430)
Aubrey Huff BAL (33, LHB, .253/.318/.411)

Branyan could be the 4th best

If I had 5 hitters on that list who would accept a one year deal, my order of preference would be Thome, Delgado, Stairs, Branyan, and Nick Johnson. Nick Johnson would be the best over a long-term, but for one year, there’s 4 guys who would have good years in that top four.

Unless the Mariners have someone knocking the door down, they should probably bring Branyan back anyways.

5 years in age

ability to play first base well

I love Nick Johnson, but his defense has fallen apart, and his power has been sapped. Injuries suck. Someone would be smart to sign him on a small, incentive-laden deal, though.

None of these guys make sense of the Royals — assuming a competent GM, 1B/Dh is the easiest positoin to fill, and blowing money on guys over 30 is well, so Dayton Moore.

I crunched rouch numbers on these guys last week. Branyan and Thome were the best of them. Branyan will come much cheaper, probably. Johnson is a decent player, but injuries are scary.

Delgado was great — he’s done, though, as an everyday player.

Stairs has something left — he’d have been a better bet this year (if he’d been available) for next than Mike Jacobs, actually.

Nick Johnson

well, idk who else could make an argument to be #5 on that list. The rest of this list can be broken down as follows

Toast:
Giambi
Sweeney

Competent:
Gload
LaRoche

Bad:
Huff
Quinlan
Tracy

Stairs is good in his role. If Delgado would be a part-time guy and be paid accordingly, he could be useful.

Unless Jim Thome is on the 2003 list, he should get a short time deal from someone who needs a DH for 1 or 2 years

Dayton will sign Chad Tracy

Yeah, Ifell for it… As I predicted before it came out, the last book would tell me if she was good or just lucky… um, she was lucky

I love how people say the books are better than C.S. Lewis’s books. Um, no they aren’t. Lewis deliberately wrote for kids and the books are unambiguously commited to his view of the world (right or wrong). They are deliberately “simple,” yet there is sophistication if you scratch the surface (although one neededn’t to appreciate them).

Rowling’s books have the appaerance of “deepness,” but like Warhol, R.E.M., or Oprah, turn out to be about as profound as a Trey Hillman interview.

Tolkien -- overrated by fans, underrated by detractors

Loved them as a kid… read them repeatedly… then thought I “outgrew” then. A couple years back. visiting my parents, churned through them all again… better than I remembered.

I seriously wonder if there’s an “unreliable narrator” thing going on with the LoTR trilogy, given the “editors introduction” or whatever.

I hate almost all “alternative rock” or whatever from that (or any) era, so I have to be taken even less seriously on that stuff.

The Potter books could have been great, but, and you won’t believe this, she obviously got too self-important as she went along. The last book is an utter disaster.

Agree there.

Rowling has a lot of talent, but the first couple books were so successful, she clearly did without an editor as the series went along.

SHe “covered the bases” int he last book, but in the most lackluster way possible — the Snape thing, the key to the whole series, was SO clumsy and predictable…

So let me get this straight:

Bruce Chen gives you 6.2 of 3 run ball, so you bring in Jamey Wright (who had his one good appearance – 2 scoreless – the other night) to blow any hope that Chen might have given us to stay in the game and hope for a fluky moment late in the game.

To continue the 1B/DH discussion

AAAA guys who probably could be moved for cheap

Juan Miranda (27 in 2010, Cuban, LHB, Yankees AAA, .269/.355/.475) [Any AAA Yankee 1st Baseman is expendable]
Shelly Duncan (30, RHB, Yankees AAA, .268/.363/.548) [Peanut Butter Shelly Time is technically a RF, but let’s face the facts, he’s a 1B/DH at heart]

LHB who are presumably blocked:
Bryan Lahair (hates Mike Carp)
Joe Koshansky (who went from being blocked by Helton to being blocked by Prince Fielder, while also putting up a hitting line that is a crime against humanity)
Dan Ortmeier (built like Teahen, hits like Gload, BB/TL)

And the ultimate in RHB AAA

John Lindsey, 32 years old, Florida AAA, hit 7 of his 18 homers off of LHP

In a just world, he would enjoy 5 weeks of hitting LHP off of the bench.

There’s not a lot of good RHB types who could pinch hit or DH

i don't mean this as a slight against him...

but i think, in some subconscious way, Poz knows he doesn’t need KC sports anymore, in the sense that a lot of guys, in some indirect way, benefit from their local teams being good… if the Royals won the WS, or even made the playoffs, we could have a wave of books, “as told to” or otherwise, from Dutton, Mellinger, Poz, Whitlock, etc

he’s basically a national figure at this point — though he doesn’t do any TV it seems — and he’s in his book writing phase, about stuff he’s interested in on his own

5-10 years ago, he’d be all over Moore in the pages of the Star, but there’s really no point anymore

by Freneau on Aug 1, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

You're right

we’d enjoyo it if he ripped Moore, but what’s the point? Most people would just see him as another Plaschke type if he did that.
