I kindof like Ryan's long, winding story there
He’s practicing to be “old baseball man” in about 30 years.
“We can’t bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell ‘em stories that don’t go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. “Gimme 5 bees for a quarter” you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions, because of the war. The only ones you could get were those big yellow ones…"

It’s really stunning that Mark Grudzielaniek, even at his age, only got a short minor-league deal, yet Bloomquist got two years
Grudz is way old, but it’s stunning — given his playing time, he was above average every season 2003-2008. It wouldn’t have lasted, but some team couldn’t have used him as even a platoon guy/utility infielder?

So, uh, I haven't collected baseball cards in a while
I grab a pack once a year or so just to see what they look like but that’s it. However, I see this news in my inbox this morning from Beckett: “Topps Lands MLB Exclusive for 2010”. Apparently, Upper Deck has NHL and Panini America- a relative newcomer in the US market but big in Europe- has the NBA. So, 3 of the 4 big sports have exclusivity contracts for 2010. To further complicate matters, Upper Deck has an MLBPA license for next year, just not MLB so we might see something like “Billy Butler, Kansas City” (no Royals).
Doesn’t sound like good news for the trading card industry. Then again, Upper Deck kindof started this arms race in the late 80s so maybe that’s just coming home to roost.

Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
I know our LH relievers aren't all that good,
but honestly, with Mauer/Morneau/Kubel due up, why wouldn’t you at least give yourself the platoon advantage for these 3 hitters? You know Gardner won’t pinch hit for any of them; then you can go to Colon for Cuddyer and Crede, or Soria if the lefty you bring in gets them out 1-2-3.
Hillman simply does not believe in the platoon advantage. It’s the only explanation, and once we have some talent in place, it’s going to become EVEN MORE GLARINGLY OBVIOUS, as his bullpen mismanagement costs us game after game.

Skewered virtually every popular metal band in history. Most viewers didn’t have the background to fully appreciate this aspect of the movie.

Just an oddball who decided, in the early 80’s, to cheer differently from the horde of Yankee and Met fans he grew up with. In just about every way but baseball fan-hood, I’m a New Yorker through and through.

Bet we've co-rooted for the Royals
in Yankee Stadium a few times, then.
Two games I specifically recall attending during that span: a snowy Opening Day in 1996, and Runelvys Hernandez’s debut in 2002.
