Well
I have to say this is probably a good move. They get Alex some cheap AB’s vs pitching he should tear up and regain some confidence against, and they can always save his face publicly by saying that he wasn’t feeling 100% after the hip surgery.

Only 3 for his last 27 with 9 K's
and no singles — those 3 hits are 2 doubles and 1 home run.
Thank Hillmoore we still have Superbloomers to tide us over while Alex regains his stroke.

Grievance in 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . .
The Royals are gaming the system here to get an extra year before Gordon could become a free agent. Gordon entered the year with exactly 2 years of service time. A player needs 6 full years of MLB service time to qualify for free agency. There are 183 days in the MLB season, but under the rules, a full season for service time purposes is 172 days. In other words, if a player spends 11 days or less in the minors during a season, he will get credit for a full year of service time.
With Gordon sent down today and assuming he would be recalled when rosters expand on September 1 (it might be later if Omaha is still playing), he would spend 13 days in the minors. Under that scenario, Gordon would be 2 days short of receiving a full year of MLB service time, which would delay free agency from after the 2012 season (when he would have 5 years 170 days of service time) to after the 2013 season.
And, no, it does not affect arbitration because he would qualify for aribitration this offseason as a Super 2.

And because he will likely spend less than 20 days in the minors
it will not count as an option

They can file a grievance
But I think the Royals have a legitimate argument that it is entirely for baseball reasons. It may not be, but on the surface it can be argued it is.

The Royals certainly have an argument and Gordon may not win
but this comes on the heals of similar moves like JJ Hardy and Chris Young. With this becoming a trend, the union is going to respond, and it only takes one win to set the precedent.
The problem for the team is the timing of the demotion. Why wait until 2 days before he would get credit for a full season of service time? It creates a bad inference.
Gordon might also be able to argue that he is still hurt, so he really should go on the DL and play in the minors as part of his rehab. Players have been successful on that argument in the past.
by Gopherballs on Aug 18, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think he has a case
personally. Yea, he has MORE of a case that he is truly injured and should be DL’d, but he has NO case that he is performing at a MLB quality level, and KC is fucking him by sending him down. He is working on a new swing, and his numbers have by enlarge, been shit in KC.

Gordon was the third best hitter on the team last year
And only one of three Royals who above league average last year. He hit 260/351/432, 783 OPS, 344 wOBA.
He does not even have 100 ABs this year — the equivalent to one month of playing time (wrapped around a three-month DL stint). One bad month is not going to be a very strong argument for the Royals.
And no, an arbitrator is not going to hold it against Gordon that he has not turned into Evan Longoria.

yeah, never trust a large sample size
when an arbitrary short one will do.
If Gordon had one bad month in the middle of a full season, no one would say anything. But because his bad month of stats is also his only stats this year, greater importance is being placed on it for no valid reason.
This is the same analytical flaw as when Kyle Davies had one good September and it suddenly meant to some that he was now very good. If it happened during the middle of the season, no one would have anything like that.

I thought when Gordon was coming off of his rehab assignment
at least one beat writer said that Gordon had to come back at that point — that minor league rehab assignments couldn’t be longer than whatever his was. So, the only way he could have spent more time in AAA was to option him.
Unless I'm wrong...

It depends on whether he was still hurt
By rule, rehab assignments are limited to 20 days (30 days for pitchers). If the player is healthy, he must be recalled after the 20th day. But if the player still has legitimate lingering effects from the injury, the team can extend the stint by filing paperwork with the commissioner’s office.
There is a rule that a team cannot assign players to the minors due to injury. If Gordon’s problems are due to his hip, the team would have to put him on the disabled list and send him to the minors on a rehab assignment. The difference between an optional assignment and a rehab assignment is important to the player because he continues to accrue MLB service time on a rehab assignment. Over the years, players have successfully challenged on this ground.

Maybe Teahen will play better for the time being
since he’s clearly a much worse player when asked to defend at non 3B positions.

Gordon stats
since coming off the DL: .227/.310/.333, 84 PA, 17 hits, 9 walks, 2 doubles, 2 HR, 13 singles, 3 stolen bases
But the more time Gordon spends away from Trey and his magic 8 ball lineup, the better
Gordon in spots other than the 8 hole since coming off the DL: 33 AB, 9 hits, 2 doubles, 1 HR

long overdue IMO
although I thought that he seemed to be coming around before the recent K-fest.
look, I get that if you WAR it up that Gordon has had a couple of decent years before 2009. however, for the royals to be successful, he needs to be much more than decent to be successful. however, i will offer up that this is really more a symptom of the overall mismanagement of the organization over the past several years than a failure by any one player.
i know that DM is the devil in these parts, and that every failure over the organization’s entire existence can be traced to him, but consider for a moment that from an All-Star outfield of Damon, Dye, and Beltran, and all-star pitchers in David Cone and Kevin Appier, that we got absolutely fucking squat. take a look at the A’s; Billy Beane has ridden the Hudson/Mulder/Zito gravy train into an absolute BOUNTY of players. Not to criticize Beane, he did a great job and continues to do a great job.
On top of that, we went cheap in the draft for several years and left the cupboard almost entirely bare, save for a couple of players (really good players, but still not nearly enough).
This is not meant to endite any one person, a failure so utterly total has multiple levels of blame. David Glass, Allard, Herk Robinson, you name it they all failed miserably for several years. so, every time some weak-ass two bit player comes in and doesn’t produce ($1.5 million for Willie Bloomquist-the HORROR!!!) we act like it’s the end of the world.
You look at the Rays; they whiffed on Josh Fucking Hamilton and still built a successful franchise because they drafted so well for so long that they’re suddenly overflowing with talent.
We have had so many opportunities over the years to keep or add talent and at every turn for close to 15 years, we have blown it. So, to expect that we’re going to turn it around in a couple of years, unless the team has just an insane percentage of hits, is/was a pipe dream. DM may not be the man to ultimately get us competitive, but we are/were down so far, that it’s going to take anybody several years to dig out.

This all true. It is also why Teahen, DDJ, and a lot of other guys should have been moved by now for players.
He can get 4, NOT 5.

Respectfully disagree
Teahen and DDJ are not going to bring anything significant back. I would agree that we should explore trading Meche and Soria, and dare I say even Zack Greinke. We have MULTIPLE holes to fill, and in any case where we can get more than one player back who can legitimately help us, or reduce salary, or get younger, or all of the above, we need to seriously consider doing it.
I just don’t think anyone really appreciated how far down this organization had/has fallen. There are some OK players, but no stars and no depth.

I'm trying to reconcile this
“i will offer up that this is really more a symptom of the overall mismanagement of the organization over the past several years than a failure by any one player.”
With your defense of Dayton Moore. You do realize he has been managing this organization for over three years now, the bulk of Alex Gordon’s career, right?

what i'm saying is more that
part of the reason we are so dependent on one or two players panning out is that we have had so few prospects to begin with.
if alex gives us what he gave us last year, but that’s coupled with shrewd drafts and trades from the past several years, the overall team is much better and not so dependent on his being a superstar.
we are still trying to dig out from that era is my point.

Setting the demotion itself aside
Isn’t it weird that we need a THIRTEEN man pitching staff? Just absurd.
Another possibility – Dayton didn’t want to risk losing any of his bullpen arms to the waiver wire.
Stop laughing.
No, stop laughing. I’m serious.
Anybody want to bet he parades out this “explanation” for this rather bizarre move?

this is stupid in my opinion
3 SB since coming off the DL – seems like his hip is feeling pretty good
it looks like he is starting to come around.
Trey, how does this help you win more games?
Why not DFA one of the set up guys in the bullpen. Really, draw a name out of the hat and we will be improved.
This is an extremely odd move, unless it is done purely for delaying his service time.

It gets the Royals another year of team control. And any grievance that Gordon might file has absolutely no chance of success given his putrid numbers this season.
