So Cox carries 140 Royals games a year...

And I like that the didn’t really miss a game over the first 70 games of the season, but now that we are well into the second half it seams that 2 or 3 games a week aren’t aired, which is fine since watching the Royals right now is kind of depressing, but what if we were in a pennant race, wouldn’t it have been better to miss more games in the beginning?

so, they’re paying for the games earlier in the season assuming we won’t be out of it before mid-july

These guys are good and do not suck: Butler, Soria, Greinke
These guys are ok barely: Teahen
Guys that suck: everyone else

Since so many more guys suck than don’t, the team therefore must suck.

Thanks.

I can’t disagree with anything Poz is quoted as saying in the article you cited, and I’m very definitely not in support of lifting Rose’s lifetime ban. I don’t see Poz himself making the case for that in what he’s quoted as saying, only laying out the case that has been and will continue to be made by others. And I agree that MLB exploiting Rose for the All-Time team was shabby — if he’s banned, he’s banned.

From Poz himself, I found The Hit King’s Lament. Good article; Poz tries to get him to talk about his playing days, and Rose can’t stop talking about how he was “wronged”.

You have enthusiasm for "The Machine"?

I have zero desire to read that book. Just don’t care about the Reds.

Also, I think the cover looks hideous, and the “A hot team, a legendary season, and a heart-stopping World Series. The story of the 1975 Cincinatti Reds.” Sounds like something a 5th grader wrote.

And here’s the thing about Pete Rose, everyone knows he’s one of the greatest players of all time and that’s all that really matters. The HOF lets in people that don’t deserve it all the time (Jim Rice), Pete shouldn’t give a crap whether he’s in or not. It’s just a building in the middle of nowhere.

Fire Everyone

by billybeingbilly on Aug 23, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I hate the cover and the title too

But I still have some fondness for the Reds of that era for pounding the Yankees into submission after the Chambliss game. And I like Posnanski’s writing, so I’m looking forward to it.

If there’s a chapter in there about how Rose’s case deserves to be re-evaluated, I’m skipping it.

by 2X2L on Aug 23, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

kinda gotta agree

and I’m not really sure why the Reds needed a book about them at this point

we’ve had 70s baseball nostalgia for quite awhile now, given that young people from that time are now in positions of prominence

I’d probably rather read about the 2003 Marlins (ok that’s a joke) or any of the great 1990s teams

someone needs to chronicle the Kelly Gruber Blue Jays years

by Freneau on Aug 23, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure Poz will bring something new to the subject, and I’ll find it worthwhile.

I’m also about to launch into the new biography of Satchel Paige, and he’s not exactly a brand new subject either.

by 2X2L on Aug 23, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I think both our interesting meters are questionable

After all, it’s August 23, and we’re both still watching/listening to the Kansas City Useless Royals.

by 2X2L on Aug 23, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I'm just bitching about them at this point

I rarely watch the games as there will be an inevitable point that will cause me to yell and scream about the team being horrible. I gave up regular watching at the start of July.

And by “he’s at least interesting”, I meant Satchel Paige.

by AxDxMx on Aug 23, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup, I got that you meant Satchel.

Also, I get that you have zero interest in the Reds. That’s fine with me. I was only pointing out to RR that a book doesn’t have to cover a brand new subject to hold interest. (I’m also wondering what “nostalgia” has to do with anything. Was Edward Gibbon nostalgic for the Roman Empire just because he wrote about it? But he didn’t respond, so I didn’t get to ask him.)

Anyway, I’m sure it won’t bother anyone here if I read The Machine and decide it wasn’t a waste of my time. If I like it a lot I’ll probably post about it and endeavor to explain why.

by 2X2L on Aug 23, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh you don't have to defend yourself to me

I was just stating my opinion of it. I can understand why people would want to read it though. It just holds no interest for me, especially since I didn’t grow up with those players (born in 1979). Hell, a book about the late 90’s Yankees’ teams would hold zero interest for me. Although, I can’t wait for the book “Documenting the Disaster: The Sad Saga of the Kansas City Royals 1986 to present”. Howser dies, Kauffman dies, hope dies, no owner, Glass becomes owner, laughingstock of the league, little league teams have better fundamentals, etc….

I think it has a good chance, for a couple of reasons:

1) There just aren’t that many good hitters who try to be contact hitters anymore — most of the best hitters are rightly focused on getting good pitches to hit, getting on base, hitting for power

2) I don’t think other players will take/have the opporunity to arificially extend their careers like Rose did.

among active guys

Jeter and Arod have a chance, Arod’s already at 2500 basically, and is 33, but yea… he’ll likely leave the game early

I don’t know who is gonna tell Derek Jeter to go away however… Jete’s is at 2700 and is 35

in any case, my main quibble is that it’s just not a good bet to say, “this record will last 50 years”… 50 years is a long time, especially considering the sport is only 120 years old or so

by Freneau on Aug 23, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Both Jeter and A-ROd will hang on as long as they're allowed to play every day

they both love playing, and love baseball history

but they both will take a pitch, and while both might be selfish re: playing time, neither can compete with Rose in that regard

by Freneau on Aug 23, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

haha

Jeter is overrated, just not as much as people thought

Don’t worry, every time people forget to babble about him, he has a great season, everyone jimps on the bandwagon, then the next season he OPSes .750 and turns into Michael Young in the field again.

It’s hard to tell how superstars age with the normal aging curve. A-Rod’s obviously a whole different level of awesome than Jeter, but I wonder about how he’ll age after the injuries the last couple years

Hillman is a tool

he’s GOT to be under orders to fuck things up as badly as he can. Stranger things have happened, I know. But otherwise, he’s the worst manager who ever stood in a dugout. Our wives, nieces and girlfriends knew that bringing in Farnsworth was a sure way to end this game.

I'm with you, DiggityDawg

I was one of those guys who couldn’t muster a bad things to say about the Royals in recent years. This year, if they’d done something significant, like fired Trey in July, I might have been right back there. And let’s face it: it might have made at least a marginal difference. Dealing Teahan would have made me draw the blade from my throat, too.
