September Callups or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Trust The Process™
For those that get the reference, you'll understand when I say that The Process™ in this case is a bomb. There are very few people of deserving to start on this team right now, and the bullpen is the biggest clusterfrak we've ever seen. I say blow the team up by calling up the maximum number of callups that we can and playing them all of September, regardless of the outcome.
Let's start with the current 40 man roster and guys that the Royals should take a look at:
Relievers: Carlos Rosa
Infielders: Kila Ka'aihue, Tug Hulett
Outfielders: none
Carlos Rosa hasn't had a great year, but is he better than Jamey Wright or Kyle Farnsworth? Probably. Kila will come up and DH, as Billy Butler has earned the right to play first base this year and seems to have hit another gear after the ASB.
Now let's look at the current 40 man roster, and take out the trash:
John Bannister, Roman Colon, Mario Lisson. Lisson just needs to be taken off of the 40 man roster. I don't think he's considered a prospect at this point, and we shouldn't be worried about losing him in the Rule 5 draft. Bannister and Colon are wastes of space that should be put on irrevocable waivers. This clears 3 spots. Guys on the 60 day DL also do not count as spots and we currently have 2 (Aviles, Crisp), let's make it 3 and move Waechter to it as well. There are only 39 guys on the 40 man right now, so that's 1 more, for a total of 7 spots open to promote guys with.
Now the AAA roster, who should we call up that wasn't on the 40 man? How about Lenny DiNardo, Jason Godin, and Disco Hayes on the pitching side, and Cory Aldridge, Scott Thorman, and Jordan Parraz in the outfield? Shealy will have nowhere to play, he stays home. That's 6 leaving 1 more spot.
On to AA. Victor Marte, Federico Castaneda, and Rowdy Hardy are all interesting callups, though I think Rowdy needs to stay out of MLB for now, as he may get rocked. The first 2 pitchers have 5 saves between them, really nice WHIPs, and SO/IP ratios around 1. David Lough and Jeff Bianchi should come too. So that's 3 too many. I need to open up some more roster spots.
DFA Bale, Wright, and Josh Anderson. Unless you want to move Pimentel and Barrera off the 40 man, which is doable as well. Devon Lowery is also a possibility to leave the 40 man.
Finally, we get to discuss playing time. Obviously all new guys in the bullpen are favored for innings. Screw all the current ones, except for Soria.
Now for positional players, we've already discussed the Kila and Billy situation, they'll be holding down 1B and DH. Brayan Pena will be the full time catcher. Bianchi will replace Yuni at SS. DDJ will get sporadic playing time the rest of the year, as we look to keep him healthy and rested. Gordon and Teahen will split time at 3B to keep Alex rested and relaxed. Mitch Maier will patrol CF most days, while Lough, Parraz, Aldridge, and Thorman patrol the corners. Bianchi will take over for Yuniefi at SS, and Callaspo will stay at 2B as he has hit well enough this year to hold his spot. Though I'm sure Bianchi could play 2nd and put Yuni at SS. Guillen sits on the bench.
On any given day, the lineup could look like this:
DDJ - LF
Callaspo - 2B
Billy Butler - 1B
Brayan Pena - C
Kila Ka'aihue - DH
Alex Gordon - 3B
David Lough - RF
Jeff Bianchi - SS
Mitch Maier - CF
All of the sudden the Royals go from having 0 rookies debut this year, to 7 debuts if I counted right, maybe more. At least this would be a team I'd be interested in watching. I make no guarantees, except that this team will win at least 8 games in September. Let's see what we've got, and get them on the field September 1st. In reality, I think we'll be lucky to see more than a couple of these guys get the call first of all, and we'll be extremely lucky to even see those lucky few get a handful of ABs or IPs.

Don't rush Bianchi!
Jeff Bianchi is enjoying his first real taste of success in a full season – why rush him to the big leagues? He began the year in A ball, and still hasn’t faced AAA pitching. Plus you’d be burning an option year on him, which we may need considering his injury history and his youth.
David Lough is a bit more understandable, although he also began the year in A ball. I’d still like him to face some AAA pitching, but a few at bats in September probably wouldn’t hurt him.
The rest of the moves are fine I suppose. I wouldn’t have much expectations for any of those guys, and they are actually quite likely to be much, much worse than what we are throwing out there now (I know that is hard to imagine). Still, you may find a diamond in the rough, and we have nothing else to lose, so why not?

I don't see what could possibly go wrong with rushing a guy to the big leagues
Sure, Alex Gordon had way fewer minor league PAs than Bianchi, but there are “whispers that he’s resistant to coaching,” so that’s all on him.

Well it's not meant as a rush to MLB
more a reward for such a great season. Burning an option year isn’t good I guess. It won’t happen so it’s a moot point, but Bianchi could get the Kila treatment with about 20 ABs if he did come up.

time for me to fill my role as acting "stale joke" police
“Trust the Process” has now officially been over-used. Time to come up with a newer way to sarcastically express the same frustration.

That's the thing, it's not a joke.
Dayton really believes we should Trust the Process™ so much, that he keeps talking about “The Process”. It’s not stale, it speaks to how inept he truly is as a GM.

Which reminds me
Whatever happened to the Mark Quinn and Andy Sisco awards? Can we give them to the whole team (minus Grienke and a few others) this year?
by BrRoyal on Aug 26, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It seems like we have voted on them in almost a year!
My prelim favorites:
Mark Quinn = Mike Aviles (he got hurt, yes, but still)
Sisco = Kyle Davies

hey now
when it was .360, there was no reason to make fun of it. i never said it wouldn’t come back down to earth. we all expected that it would. my point was only that it didn’t make sense to attack a good OBP while it was still a good OBP.
by kcdc1 on Aug 26, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
also
.360 was a total guess. i have a feeling that it was lower than that at the time. probably .340 or something. point was, the board was repeatedly tearing away at a league average OBP as if it were .290. sure, it was likely to fall, but it hadn’t yet.

So everyone should have stuck our heads in the sand?

Agree
Maybe both of them are 2010 callups. September callups should almost always be limited to AAA guys who have been there a little while shown that there’s not a lot left to learn in the minors, so they should get a look at the Major League game. They also are oft used to “reward” a player for a good AAA season (i.e. Craig Brazell). Thus, I wouldn’t touch any of the AA guys (especially any that actually have some prospect status) nor the newer AAA guys with upside (Godin, the injured-again Parraz).
I anticipate conservatism favoring the current 40-man roster: Rosa, Kila, Hulett and probably Lisson (you can never have enough light-hitting middle infielders). The only potential additions to the 40-man for September would be Aldridge and DiNardo. These callups would have the added bonus of favorinng the vets. Only if Lisson got to play would he become the only Royal to make his Major League debut in 2009.

And, oh yeah
Some guy named Gordon who I’ve heard plays 3b, but he’s got an attitude problem.

Great title
is Trey Dr. Strangeglove?

I wanted to end it with a Photoshop
but lost the idea as it was 4 a.m. when I posted it while playing some internet poker. I guess there’s no cure for insomnia like the Royals.
Dayton is the US President, Dr. Strangelove is Trey. Glass is the Russian leader (as I imagine Dayton talks to Glass on the phone that way). Trey also plays many other characters, just like Sellers, and yes, Trey rides the bomb, which probably would have been the Photoshop.

off subject a bit, but....
why would the royals not put a waiver claim on every guy like Wagner (i.e. having no remaining years left on their contract and project as a type A or B Free Agent)?

on a side, side note
has anyone seen the parody of a chat between Royals players posted once Kyle Farnsworth was signed? It’s hilarious and I needed a laugh after the last few weeks of Royals.

it wouldn't be that much for the rest of the season...
and they could chalk it up to the “draft fund”. Plus he would be a pretty awesome sight in the Royals pen for what, less than 2 Mil?
It’s all moot since Billy would have definitely invoked the no trade clause on KC, but I still think the cost/risk is worth 2 1st round draft picks.

He wanted his option declined before the trade
Why? No one in their right mind will pay him $8M next year. What a dumbass.
by AxDxMx on Aug 26, 2009 2:30 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He claims he doesn't want arbitration offered (at least by the Red Sox)
because it will prevent him from signing with a team that will allow him to be a closer. He’s aware that teams will be slow to give away a draft pick just to sign him.
At this point, it seems like he’s a lot more worried about getting more saves than money or the post-season.
He can get 4, NOT 5.

I'll be shocked if the Royals make any 40 man roster moves in September
they probably won’t call up anyone who isn’t already on the 40 man. It’s obvious The Process involves being as conservative as possible and giving endless chances to overpaid journeymen and none to rookies (especially those Rany has said positive things about). I was reading Let’s Go Tribe last night and the Indians fans were like, “At least we get to watch our young players play and our GM and manager, horrible as they are, aren’t as godawful as Dayton and Trey.”
