Your Dan Cortes Since His Trade to Seattle Update

Former Royal prospect Dan Cortes has not excelled since being traded to the Mariner organization. In six starts with AA West Tennessee, Cortes has posted a 6.46 ERA in 30.2 IP. He's striking guys out -- 29 Ks -- but also walking dudes constantly (25) and allowing a hit an inning (29). Allowing homers, 3, has also been a mild problem.

So there's your Dan Cortes update.

I don't have all that much faith in Cortes

but you can never tell. when they have all the abilities there you never know when someone’s going to put it all together. After being at the top of the list of Royals to be protected this off season, I’d be a little surprised if Seattle protects him at all.

The other half

Derrick Saito, is pitching very well for Clinton in the Midwest League:

2.95 ERA, 1.63 GO/AO, holding LH to a .138 avg.

Waiting for April.

I actually really liked him when he was drafted

His upside is pretty limited, but LOOGYs can be quite valuable.

Cortes

That still doesn’t mean that was a good trade for the Royals. Yuni still sucks.

+1

He still has value, which is more than I can say for Yuniesky Betancourt.

Move to Cortes to the pen where his skillset fits

and see where he falls on the Robinson Tejeda-Juan Cruz-Octavio Dotel-Brad Lidge spectrum of releivers who miss both bats and the strike zone.

Again I agree with Gopherballs...

We traded away two possible future bullpen pitchers for Yuni. Cortes has the stuff to be a closer. Saito is a lefty with a great fastball and could be a perfect fit for a LOOGY. But, no… we are stuck with Yuni. Kind of like a lollipop that was dropped in cat litter.

Yes, nicely done.

Question for the Betancourt critics

Has anybody vehemently against the trade actually seen him play for the Royals?

I was at two games in the Minnesota series and he was a joy to watch in the field. If he can get his bat back in order, I firmly believe he’ll be a solid pickup.

I still say trading Cortes was addition by subtraction.

Sorry, I hit send too soon.

I was not being sarcastic. Betancourt does not suck (he hit another home run in last night’s win in Seattle) and he is a HUGE improvement over TPJ. He made several nice plays in the field against the Twins last weekend.

What I really don’t understand is why Buck has had a free pass in most blogs and Betancourt is hated. The Royals gave up a lot more to get Buck than Betancourt, Buck has stunk up KC for six seasons now, and Buck at his best was never as good as Betancourt at his worst.

I have opposed some of GMDM’s moves, but trading an arrested pitcher for an upgrade at shortstop is not one of them.

Nice try on confusing the issue
  1. Pena was not the starter this year. He started 15 games while he was here. Betancourt replaced the injured Mike Aviles and Bloomquist at SS. Bloomy has 29 starts at SS.
  2. Betancourt has very little range, so while he may make nice plays right at him, balls to his left and right go unchallenged unless they are slow rollers.
  3. Buck hasn’t played a ton this year, just 29 starts in 33 games played. He is pretty similar to other catchers. Catcher isn’t really an offensive position in MLB right now with a few notable exceptions. And Buck is at least OK behind the plate, other than throwing out runners stealing bases.
  4. Do you have a problem with Moore giving the worst every day SS money for the next 3 years? He keeps giving himself less and less flexibility with the players he brings in and pays money to. Farnsworth, Bloomy, Guillen, etc., why do you trust his judgment on Yuni?
