Call me Crazy....

but that was a ass kicking ugly game today.  The Royals looked like they would have had a hard time beating the 2005 version of this franchise.   Why not dump the marginal players and bring up the rookies.  Why not?????

The Orioles have overhauled the starting rotation and their bullpen with rookies.  The brought up a rookie outfielder who is now in the running for ALROY.  In fact they have used 16 different minor leaguers this season thus far.  Oh, did I mention that they have a better record than we do.   Our hated rivals, the Cards, have use 17 different players from the minors and they are battling for the division title even with Wellmeyer in the rotation.  I just watched the Cubs vs Reds game and the one thing that Lou does that I really like is to use his AAA team like a taxi squad.  The ICub players seemed to be on free bus passes to Wrigley field.  Did I mention that the Cubs are in the race for central division crown and that the ICubs have a better record than Omaha.  Why not the Royals????

We are never going to know if Rosa can be in a major league bullpen until he pitches here for more than a week.  He has to be better than Tejada.  Put Logue in leftfield and Maier in centerfield and let them start the rest of the season.  Can it be worse than what we saw today and the past month.  Why is Bruce Chen up here while Lenny DiNardo is 7-4 and still in AAA????  Use the minor leagues before we go out and sign more players off the slag heaps of other teams cast offs.   Kia, Holland, Mertins, Lubanski.... they all deserve a shot and this season is going nowhere fast so why not bring them up.  Dump or trade some of these guys and bring up the rookies.  Watching young gritty scrappers would be a hell of a lot better than what we saw today.

Hillfire and Dancing in the Dark Dayton, you are starting to remind me of the Royals bosses of old.  I am starting to have visions of Fuddo the Clown's ghost returning to the dugout.  Get the sunflower seeds ready.  Do something and do it quickly the off season is rapidly approaching and so is another 100+ game losing season.   It is great to look down the road and develop talent slowly but at least put a team on the field that is fun to watch and has a chance of winning.  That is not what we saw today.  Today was just SAD!!!!

hey, you old fart... watch you mouth or I will send Runny up there to set on you.

I am surprised we haven’t traded for him yet. He has better numbers than Chen.

I like the sentiment

Unfortunately, I think doing that would make the team worse. We just don’t have the talent at most positions in AAA, and jumping from AA is a recipe for early disaster. Exhibit A = Alex Gordon.

by AxDxMx on Aug 4, 2009 2:46 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

But I don’t think we are arguing that they should bring up Moosetacos, Hosmer, or even Duffy. I wanna see the AAAA guys, give them a shot to show us what they can do. Maybe they tear it up for a month and we can use the guy in a trade. Or maybe they do well enough to show they should be in line for a backup spot for next season. I’m sure most of these guys would suck but what do we have to lose? Also, I believe that one of the reasons we lack depth at AAA is because of DMGM’s unwillingness to call-up 5-7 guys in September. He claims there would be confusion in the clubhouse (not that most of these current guys aren’t confused as to why they still have jobs anyway). All you’d have to do is sit down with the call-up, tell him that all we’ll guarantee him is an appearance in a game (and hopefully a few other opportunities along the way). I guarantee you that most 26+ year olds that are still slogging through the minors are mainly just playing for the dream, they have no illusions about being superstars or even making a ton of cash. They just want the opportunity to be a big leaguer for a few days and get their names in the record books plus have their families and friends get the opportunity to see them achieve their dream. And if need be, during the season, a lot of these guys are at least passable if you have some injury problems (like the Royals had in the OF this season) and need some help for a couple of weeks. Come on Dayton, serve these guys a few cups of coffee!!

by trauty on Aug 4, 2009 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

My point being

I don’t think a lot of the AAAA guys will sign with us unless they have no other options. On the surface, the Royals look like a good team to squeeze a little bit of Big League time out of (since they have obviously sucked for decades) but with a GM that would rather sign somebody elses trash and doesn’t use his minor leagues at all, anybody who does a little research would know not to sign with the Royals.

by trauty on Aug 4, 2009 3:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree

I just don’t think grudz’s wholesale approach would work. The Royals would be fielding what would likely be a worse than replacement team, at least with the bat. In the field, it might actually be an upgrade.

by AxDxMx on Aug 4, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

and playing worse than replacement-level is a real problem?

even if it did make the team substantially worse, which is saying something, i don’t see that as a reason not to call up some younger guys for a tryout and some seasoning.

me neither

I just don’t think benching guys like DDJ and Teahen for Lough, Parraz, and Maier will accomplish much.

we're already fielding that worse than replacement team

heck, this is a worse than zombie corpse team

You aren't trusting in the Process

Like I’ve said before, the low minors it’s working! That will get to the MLB sooner or later….

I thought I heard something about a minor injury

that, or he’s taking too many walks, i.e., he’s showing lack of faith in The Process.

I'll bet

if you made this into a T-Shirt, you would be able to sell quite a few. (However, prolly not enough to pay for the lawsuits from Lucas, the Royals, and GMDM – but it makes me warm inside just thinking about wearing a T-Shirt with this picture on it to the K)

My thoughts

I don’t think they should rush Lough up this season.

On the other hand, there is absolutely no reason Rosa shouldn’t be recalled immediately. Same with Kila. Kila should be given a shot to be part of a platoon DH, essentially replacing Jacobs. Rosa should be given as much as a shot as he warrants, up to and including primary set up man. I see NOBODY among the sucktacular six that would preclude me from reaching this conclusion.

I also would call up Yabuta. I believe his contract is up after this season, so let’s get another look in case his recent improvement at AAA is legit. If he looks improved, consider signing him to a cheap contract next year. If he sucks again, fine – release him.

I would give serious consideration to taking a look at Hayes and Parraz in September as well. It might be rushing these 2 just a bit – but I see no harm in letting them get a taste this season, assuming Hillman uses them carefully.

by loyal2sdad on Aug 4, 2009 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

But, what's likely to happen

Moore only calls up 2 or 3 guys max, and Hillman plays them exceedingly sparingly, thus continuing a Royals tradition. (We have to try to finish 4th instead of 5th, and avoid 100 losses, because doing those two things is apparently “PART OF THE PROCESS”

you can't evaluate the success of the Process in 6 months, or even 12 months

it will take at least 30 months to fully evaluate it, so everyone should stop their nitpicking and begin to trust more…

If you start singing Joan Baez songs again

I am coming over to Omaha to box your ears. So, what you are saying that we have to swallow another 100+ losing season and maybe another one after that on the basis of trust that this organization knows what they are doing. Your honor, I would like to present Bruce Chen as exhibit A, in my quest to prove that the Royals are a tad confused.

What happens if we wait the required 30 months and nothing has improved? Will Dancing Dayton be any better than Baird? Will Hillfire win more games than Buddo as a manager? It seems that I have been waiting for the Royals to turn it around for a long long time. It would be nice if the Royals made the playoffs once before you and I leave this world.

by grudz96 on Aug 4, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

actually, my comment was associated with GMDM's comment that you

can’t evaluate trades until at least 2 years down the line. Maybe if you are talking about prospects, that is true, but YBJ? Unlikely that we will need to wait that long.

Ryan Freel, Farnsworth, Chen, Ponson, Tejeda...

The evaluation won’t take that long. I think Dancing Dayton has been standing to close to the mimeograph machine again.

Mimeograph Machine? Kind

Of like Kornheiser’s reference to an “email machine”, only 10 years later and even more antiquated. I’ll bet most of the people here have never seen one, and some don’t even know what one is. I hated that smell.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

You can't question the process timetable

In fact, part of “trusting the process” is that no one outside of the organization can question the process in any manner, including asking how long the process will take.

Where would our progress over the last FIFTEEN years be if the organization “braintrust” wasted time answering questions about the process rather than, you know, working on the process? Suffice to say, we wouldn’t have made as much progress as we obviously have since Glass took over.

Please do not point out that the Emperor has no clothes. That’s part of the process as well.

Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

by loyal2sdad on Aug 4, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

and no fair looking at W-L records or Pythag, either

frankly, I don’t know how those things are evaluated

You just have to watch the Process every day. And by “watch,” I don’t mean watch the games. I mean watch carefully how hard Dayton and his boys are working in the office — this “work hard” strategy is revolutionary, I sure hope other teams don’t start working hard, too.

Dayton has been “in this game” for 13 (THIRTEEN!!) years. Do NOT think you know more.

I knew there was a reason that this season was an unlucky one

for the big D. No, I don’t claim to more than he does, but then again I haven’t been in baseball for 13 years and get paid millions of dollars to be on top of the process.

by grudz96 on Aug 5, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I would imagine Yabuta goes home

Better than being in AAA and riding buses.

by AxDxMx on Aug 4, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

The reason they "can't" bring up players

is that Dayton’s managed to construct a roster with almost no roster flexibility.

The only guys with options are the ones that shouldn’t be sent down (Butler, Gordon, Soria, Callaspo(?), Hochevar).

While the crap on the roster is out of options, and it’s obvious Dayton doesn’t like to lose “depth”. cf. TPJ, Luis Hernandez.

Unless I'm wrong...
