Maybe it's better in Oakland for Olivo because the backstop isn't so far away on wild pitches...?

I don’t even know if that’s true. I’m just trying to find the silver lining.

Oakland has massive swathes of foul territory

Though I don’t know how far back the backstop is.

Seems like they’d have a lot of ground behind the plate too. Don’t know though.

from Wiki (so it must be true)

He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 1st round. In 2005, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies along with Aaron Rowand and Daniel Haigwood for slugger Jim Thome.

Gio was rated the # 2 prospect in the Phillies’ system behind Cole Hamels by Baseball America in 2006. In December 2006, Gio was traded back to the White Sox with Gavin Floyd for Freddy Garcia. Gonzalez led the minor leagues with 185 strikeouts in 150 innings in 2007.

On January 3, 2008, Gonzalez was traded along with fellow prospects Ryan Sweeney and Fautino de los Santos for outfielder Nick Swisher. He was ranked the #1 prospect in the White Sox system at the time of the trade.

i can't speak for him,

by Fernando Vina School of Linguistics on Aug 31, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its nothing elaborate...

its just 10 little things, and I dont think its exactly the same but very similar…
Usually backs out of the box, or steps way across the plate and walks bat, taps helmet, hits shoes with bat, does the little extension with the arms to adjust sleeves does this weird neck high practice swing.

Im sure Im way over analyzing, and I do love DDJ, so Im not sure why it bothers me so much, Im just fickle like that sometimes.

Maybe he's my own personal Bobby Sippio

I understand his limitations but I can’t help but like the guy. If Jacobs was hitting .275 we’d be ready to build a statue for the guy. We could do with a few more guys that just quietly get on base and do a few more things right. He would definitely be a bench player on a contender but he’s arguably the best outfielder we have (which is an indictment of the Royals in general). Stick him in left and leave him alone until his contract is up.

Bloomers throw to the plate gets by Olivo

runner advances to 2nd, Hochevar backs up the play, puts his head down to adjust his cap. Meantime, runner who had stopped at second advances to third during cap adjustment.

by swing and a miss on Aug 31, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Single to RF........throw to the plate.......

Rajai Davis (the batter) holds up at first because Billy could’ve cut off the throw.

Throw gets away from Olivo, Davis advances to 2nd……….

Hochevar slowly runs down the ball as Davis rounds 2nd aggressively……..Hoch calmly puts his head down, takes off his hat, wipes his forehead………………all the while Davis runs to third and Hoch has NO FREAKING IDEA b/c he’s not paying a lick of attention.

a Hoch preview from before the 2006 draft

from: http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2006/06/live_blogging_t_1.php

Since then, thanks to Kent Bonham, we have learned that Hochevar may have been statistically overrated last year. His final junior stat line offers an ERA of 2.26, a number aided by context. Remove defense from the equation, and Hochevar’s ERA slips to 3.69, without his park and schedule, just 3.97. Suddenly the Dodgers unwavering offer doesn’t look so bad, does it?

Hochevar proved a lot with his stint in Indy ball, showing the same arm strength, and just a little less polish than his previous self. Given a year off to rest his once over-worked arm, this is forgivable.

At any spot in the top ten, Hochevar is simply a reach, lucky to have his hold-out gamble pay off. In truth he is a pitcher that belongs from 10-20 in the draft, garnering little more than slot from that position. Given his flakiness in the past, the bang is just not worth the buck with Hochevar.

No, that was a fine one

Rehoboam surrounded himself pretty much with yes-men who didn’t have good advice to offer. I see where you were going there.

On the other hand, I can’t off-hand think of a good analogy for Baird in the “Kings” world. There were righteous ones, and there were evil ones, but I don’t recall any being just plain incompetent. Maybe the judge Jephthah, who after being victorious over Moab thought the right thing to do was sacrifice his daughter?

Bottom line is, Moore isn’t perfect, but Baird-nostalgia is forgetting what those years were like. Hell, Mister “We Believe In Spanish” himself got so down on the team that he quit.

I couldn't think of one for Baird, either

Abraham, maybe, but I have a bit of a peculair interpretation of him (basically, Sara was really running the show, long story).

Maybe on of Eli’s sons? But they were more corrupt than incompetent.

I don't even get mad anymore

The plays are so ridiculously stupid, I just laugh. My favorite team gets ass-pounded nightly (minus Greinke), but I can’t even feel anger anymore. It’s like a ecstasy without the life-threatening side effects.

it’s awesome that we’re putting a guy with a 6.25 ERA who lets 62% of inherited runners score in clutch situations

If we all know that Bale sucks

and should never be brought into a close game, let alone kept on the roster,

and if we aren’t even being paid to make these decisions,

why the fuck don’t the Royals know this????

Exactly

if I ever have a son I’m gonna tie his right arm to his body and force him to use the left. You can stink at pitching but it won’t matter.

Trey must be pretty close to his father-in-law to leave from Sunday night to Friday for his funeral.

Granted, Trey skipping this series doesn’t appear to have much of an effect on how this team is managed.

White Flag Trade II

from SOuthSideSox

Jim Thome agreed to waive his no-trade clause and was traded to the Dodgers. Obviously, for a player who has never won a World Series, this presents him with the opportunity to essentially complete his Hall of Fame resume. However, it’s a surprise move considering Thome has not played in the field since that ill-fated game in 2007. It would behoove the Dodgers to not test his back like that with a guy two years older. He will, however, reunite with friend Manny Ramirez, who had previously stated a desire to play with Thome again. The White Sox send an undisclosed amount of cash with Thome and receive in return Justin Fuller who is an A ball middle infielder of no repute whatsoever.

Jose Contreras needed to go someplace else and moving to the National League should help make him look like a real starting pitcher.

I’ll leave it to the head man to provide us with a summation of the Gentleman Masher Era.

In other non-salary dump news, MRI was negative on Jake Peavy’s elbow, but still he’s still sore. He’ll throw tomorrow to see where he’s at physically.
