It finally has been mathematically proven....I read this in Mathematics Proofs Quarterly

Royals Starter = Royals Starter * .85 (defense coefficient)
Royals Starter * .85 = Normal pitch count * 1.30
Normal pitch count * 1.30 = Royal Bullpen Appearance
Royal Bullpen Appearance + 10 minutes = Blown Save
Blown Save = Loss

Therefore….Royals Starter = Loss

Actually, Beltre probably wouldn't be a great investment as a FA unless he takes a substantial paycut from 15 million a year.

He’s awesome and underrated right now (he’s a consistent 3.5-4 WAR player, and a legitimate 10-20 glove right now), but if his range goes south in his early thirties he’s alot less valuable. He would be a good pickup for 2 years, but anything more is awfully risky.

by Decatur on Aug 4, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

there are a lot of good players out there, but I don’t think the Royals should make a serious investment in anyone over 30 since they won’t be contending until 2012 (at the earliest)

Our bullpen was absolutely horrendous 1996-1999.

It traumatized an entire generation of Mariner fans. My most vivid early memories of being a baseball fan are the feeling of dread I’d have whenever the bullpen was brought in. It got pretty good in 2000-2002 with Sasaki, Rhodes, and Nelson. And Putz was amazing with us in 2006 and 2007, but he’s broked now. Our bullpen this year beyond Aardsma sucks, although Lowe has been good of late, and Shawn Kelley was awesome (see USSMariner for this) until this happened may 3rd (oblique spontaneously combusts)

I mean, come on.

In high school, we adjusted our defense pitch by pitch. If we were throwing hard away, we didn’t play pull as hard from the swing side defense, if we were throwing offspeed, we adjusted a little more pull to the swing side… pitch by pitch, we looked in as a defense to see what pitch was being called.

I don’t know how MLBers can’t seem to do that type of stuff…

thats a risky proposition....

you adjust a couple steps too early….i know an offspeed pitch is coming….

My Thoughts Exactly

by philofthenorth on Aug 4, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

you don't adjust early...

You adjust as the pitcher gets ready… and you don’t just run, you take side steps and work stealthily…

Arod was accused of using his glove. Depending on how he held it, that was the type of pitch that was coming. Not so much the positioning. And if they see you adjust, then they still have to beat you hitting the ball…

true... you have to be smart about it.

"If your pitcher has a good change-up, 90 percent of them are going to be pulled, because guys are going to be out in front of them," Wilson said. "So you watch each pitch call and adjust, you let your third baseman know what’s coming."

Hey devil, if you're still curious about Saunders, he's #4 on Jason Churchill's list of the M's mid-season top-30 on prospect insider.

http://prospectinsider.com/Mid2009.pdf

There’s some concern over contact rates (though much improved this year) and long-term health of his surgically repaired throwing arm (but it seems fine right now). Churchill writes:

Without any further issues with the shoulder, Saunders is big-league ready right now with an
offensive ceiling in the .280/.350/.450 range…
At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Saunders is a very good athlete with above-average speed,
suggesting more power is in the offing with more refinement. …
Defensively, Saunders is an ideal candidate to man left field for Seattle, covering almost enough
ground to play center field regularly, with the arm to play right.

i'm not piling on the kid. However, it just seems like he doesn't get it. As I mention below, there just seems to be a lack of effort (or appearance of effort)

by Quagmire Giggity on Aug 4, 2009 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

What?

No one on this team gives any more effort than Gordon. The guy is always diving on the ground…falling over the dugout railing to catch a ball…sliding head first into home or 1B…trying to take/steal an extra base. You can fault the production, but don’t fault the effort.

by RaulDuke on Aug 4, 2009 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. And..that is really what I was getting at. It takes EFFORT to try and do things differently.

Not saying he doesn’t hustle. He just doesn’t seem to think he needs to change minor things in his approach offensively and defensively. That is effort I just don’t see.

what I don't get...

is how he could go back, spend more times in the minors.. Come back up and continue to make the SAME mistakes at this level. He has the talent (doesn’t he??). Is he just hard headed. E.g. – continuing to catch pop ups off to the side. Not being disciplined at the plate consistently….

Plenty to b()()ch about, but this lineup seems to be working – when was the last time we scored more than 4 runs? Seri-f()()king-ously – let’s see if Trey can stick with it. Although Olivo at DH seems ri-go()()amn-diculous, let’s see if Trey can keep a freaking lineup. Doesn’t anybody think that it would make sense to put the best hitters out there for a few nights in a row? This is clearly to most frustrating thing about this season – even if there are injuries and people playing like idiots, consistency is the foundation of a decent month of baseball.
