Time for Ryan and Frank to pretend that Mike Jacobs pulling the ball is a bad thing and that Mike Jacobs problems come from pulling the ball, despite virtually all of the positives from Jacobs hitting being hits to right-center/right
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
or they're just pointing out how one dimensional he is
and that MLB pitchers will exploit that until the cows come home.
He can get 4, NOT 5.
let's see
you have one-dimension where you’re pretty good (pulling the ball), and one where you generate less power, less contact, and less results (spraying the ball)
but Ryan and Frank have to pretend, after all, if Seitz’s advice works, then KS is responsible, and if it fails, then Mike Jacobs is responsible.

Kansas City Royals - rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic since 1994.
by Home Run Tony Cogan on Aug 7, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions
it's all relative...
When half your starting pitchers can’t take the game past 5 innings, the bullpen suffers.
When the offense produces goose eggs, the bullpen has no reason to care.
When John Bale comes into the game, the offense gives up.
When Jacobs/Olivo/SKey come up hacking at balls 10 feet off the plate, the baserunners could give a shit less.
When your GM and coach are tools who can’t educate about the process, no one on the entire roster gives a fuck.
So really, any argument could be right. Our offense is an absolute joke, though.
There's so many problems
You can’t pinpoint just one thing as the main cause of our ineptitude. Some days it’s offense, somedays it’s bullpen, some days it’s our starters having a shitty night, some days it’s a combo of many problems, ect. ect. ect.

i think that points to a lack of leadership
by trey, i really do. of course it can’t be quantified, but the guys on this team don’t seem to be playing for one another. it also could be that, for whatever reason, the individual pieces on this team just don’t fit for some reason.
soren did an exercise with mike macfarlane yesterday where they compared the 2006 and 2009 individual players…while the offensive players were deemed slightly better now, almost a push overall, the difference in pitching was just astounding. in 2006 our top two pitchers were redman and elarton…yet the record is close to the same. that tells me that there’s something besides talent going on.

Jacobs is seeing more pitches than anybody on this team
If we Josh Anderson murdered someone with a lawnmower, you’d get at least one guy whose post is “I’m sick of players like Josh Anderson and Mike Jacobs murdering people with lawnmowers”
Jacobs is striking out a lot, but his walk rate and pitches per PA has improved
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
Can I ask how the defense of Mike Jacobs became your personal fight this year?
Honestly curious.
He can get 4, NOT 5.
it had more potential last year when
none of the enlightened ones were paying any attention to Jacobs hitting numbers being dragged down by hitting in Miami. As for this year, he has had the same lack of luck as he had in 2008.
If Kila Kaaihue’s hitting numbers were better, then I wouldn’t be doing this as much. But Kila’s not performing in Omaha and people are piling on a guy who isn’t a clubhouse cancer asshole (unlike Guillen).
If we had Leo Nunez and not Mike Jacobs, we would still suck.
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
But you do understand that at his cost, he shouldn't be on the team next year?
Kila should get a look to see if he can produce what Jacobs does for far less money.
Jacobs is just another player that brings only one thing to this team, the Royals cannot afford a player like that. Low OBP, low avg, no defense, and awful against lefties is the type of guy a small market team just cannot have.
He can get 4, NOT 5.
Mike Jacobs won't bankrupt the Kansas City Royals
You play the better player. And Mike Jacobs is better than Kila Kaaihue.
BTW, 3 of 4 marks you have on Jacobs could be applied to Kaaihue.
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
3 of 4 are assumed.
Jacobs is going to cost close to 8 times as much as Kila.
Why go with the expensive guy?
He can get 4, NOT 5.
I think the problem w/ Jacobs is
Butler has 1B on lockdown probably until/if Hosmer pans out.
So that relegates Jacobs to DH duty. And the only thing you want from a DH is a high average and/or power. Jacobs has some power right now, but it doesn’t justify his average, because he can’t “cleanup” the basepaths.
It’s not all Jacobs’ fault. Seitz has done a masterful job fucking up something that wasn’t broken. But how do you justify keeping a DH on the roster bordering Mendoza?
then again
Kila Kaaihue doesn’t provide a high average and it’s nowhere near proven that he can provide power
that… and i’m drawing blanks on people who have been full-time DHs before 26 and had ML success. It doesn’t seem like that happens, perhaps due to the bias against the AAA slugger
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
that high OBP in Omaha translates to
around average OBP in KC, with below average power.
And Kaaihue hasn’t exactly shown a lot of doubles power in the minors either. His power in 2008 screams “outlier”
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
You're assuming it translates to around average in KC.
We are all left to assume because Jacobs has wasted the spot all year.
He can get 4, NOT 5.
Jacob's OPS is higher than Kila's MLE OPS
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
I'd hate to find out if the MLE is accurate.
Better keep Jacobs around, since he’s part of the future.
He can get 4, NOT 5.
Also gotta love that
someone who can be released after this year is a burden on this team..
as opposed to Guillen, who is going to cost $12M next year, and may not hit good enough to justify being a DH
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
Not a burden, but a replacement player that is probably just as good
is already in the organization for $400 K.
He can get 4, NOT 5.
ok
you say the Royals can’t afford Jacobs, but that he’s not a burden on them… ok
Imagine a world where we had Shealy and Kila playing, then Shealy gets hurt, Kila slumps, and people rant about how we needed a power bat at 1B/DH
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
A 4 million a year saving isn't worthless,
especially when a team has the holes the Royals do. You understand that, right? Especially when the payroll isn’t going up?
He can get 4, NOT 5.
payroll likely has $15M+ coming off with Jacobs and Crisp and Buck and Olivo
I’d non-tender Mike Jacobs at this moment and let the cheap 1B/DH sweepstakes begin
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
if he can beat out the crowd, sure
but bring on a few AAAA sluggers, have the best two in KC, and the other two in Omaha.
Keeping in mind that in this scenario, you can open a spot for Kila if Kila finishes 3rd and one of the top 2 flops.
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
I never said he wasn't seeing more pitches
But he’s striking out (which he always has), and you have to agree that he doesn’t swing at the best pitches.
Whereas someone like Gordon is the complete opposite; a pitcher could dump one 90 mph down the center of the plate and Gordon would never fathom a swing.
Jacobs has a large strike zone and the umps will call strikes on him that are balls for others
it’s a fact of life
but Olivo and SKey are in a class of their own when it comes to swinging at junk. You said “hacking at balls 10 feet off the plate”… when Jacobs has laid off stuff like that.
In fact, the percentage of strikes looking from Jacobs is 30%, a new personal high.
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
92 Ks in 287 PA and 92 Ks in 312 PA
Miggy is leading on the K% race
Olivo makes contact on 62% of swings this year, swings at the first pitch 40% of the time
Jacobs makes contact on 74% of swings and swings at the first pitch 24% of the time
they’re in different leagues this year.
Mike Jacobs is wandering through the ally as all the old hacktastic friends mock him for taking pitches.
No word on if dancing ensued
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
33.6 for Olivo
31.9 for Jacobs
Both terrible numbers and both lead the Royals hitters. Are you sticking up for Jacobs K% by using Olivo as your defense? That’s very similar to the “he’s an upgrade FOR US” defense.
He can get 4, NOT 5.
No
the guy brought Jacobs into a “hacking at bad pitches” rant and Jacobs is not in the league of Olivo and Betancourt when it comes to pitch selection
Miguel Olivo misses the ball on 38% of his swings. Even Mark Reynolds can top that.
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
Ok, so Jacobs look at more strikes but still strikes out as often.
Is that better?
He can get 4, NOT 5.
it would disprove the whole "Jacobs hacks at obvious balls" claim
I’d love for some computer genius to show us where all the called third strikes are on Jacobs. I’m suspecting he’s getting a lot of high/inside called third strikes

personally, i am a big fan of smallball
growing up with the royals, that’s what i saw and i became a fan of that style. i still think it can work, but the bottom line is you do need guys that can hit the ball. while i would rather see a smallball approach with us just wearing other teams out on the basepaths, if you gave me a lineup of jack custs and we were in the playoffs every year, i’d be ecstatic.

Smallball might work provided
you had guys with high OBPs, stolen base success rates of + 85%, and someone like Whitey Herzog managing the bullpen. I think KC can get it done with Butler and Gordon if they each pump 40-50 2bs into the gaps each year, but it would make things a helluva lot easier if they had a Custian presence, instead of Cust-lite-lite (jacobs)
