our lineup vs RHP Mortensen

LRRLLLRLR and this is batting order #99 for the Royals this year

we’ve done a lot worse for a Greinke start.. remember 7/3: DeJesus, Bert, Butler, Guillen, Olivo, Jacobs (v. a LHP), Hernandez, Maier, TPJ

It seems like the default season people use for that is Nolan Ryan's 1987

8-16, league-leading 2.76 ERA, league-leading 270 Ks in 211 innings.

If he ends up with a losing record while leading the league in ERA, I imagine he’ll be in the conversation with that season.

Over a fairly short span

That isn’t too horrendous really.

The bigger issue, is just that he is getting hit harder. No point sugar coating it. Some bad luck, sure, some regression and some just duff pitching.

I don’t see any reason to panic yet. Hitters adjust, it is up to Zack to do the same now.

did Alex keep his top hand on the bat? that’s what’s important here

Gordon now keeps both hands on the bat, which effectively shortens his swing and — the theory goes — enables him to be quicker to the ball.

(…)

Gordon had two singles Tuesday against the Mariners, followed Wednesday by his first three-hit game in more than a year — July 28, 2008, at Oakland. Even more encouraging was a line-drive homer in the fourth inning.

"Keeping two hands on the bat is giving him a shorter route to the ball," manager Trey Hillman said. "It’s taken a little of the raw power away, but he didn’t even square that one up on the good part of the bat. So it was good to see that one get out."

Alex Gordon is unlike other cats: he’d rather scour the planet for ancient artifacts and collect lost coins than enjoy the comforts of modern life. And he gets to do plenty of both in his thrilling debut adventure! He also encounters a lot of what he’d rather do without: dangerous creatures, deadly obstacles and treacherous traps!

You’ll need every one of Gordon’s nine lives as you help him run and jump his way to fortune and glory, explore exotic game worlds and overcome a cunning nemesis. You can also build your own dream island and play a variety of bonus stages as you take the role of Alex Gordon – a cat with a hero’s heart and adventure flowing through his veins!

Random stat: Gordon still looking for his first double of 2009

Brayan Pena has 7 in roughly the same amount of plate appearances (83 vs. 88). Who will win this doubles race by the end of the season? Just one of those little riveting races to watch during the stretch run.

Jacobs missed a cycle by a triple.

The chances of him getting a triple and me getting a triple might be the same.

by A. B. Aird on Aug 8, 2009 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

if Jacobs is in line for a triple

it’d be due to the outfielder KOing himself running into the bullpen fence..

I think Jacobs is running with a shinguard on, for one thing

In other news

Really happy Derrick Thomas finally got in the Hall. Carl Peterson’s speech was excellent, and I almost teared up when I saw Marty Schottenheimer get emotional. It was great.
