our lineup vs RHP Mortensen
LRRLLLRLR and this is batting order #99 for the Royals this year
we’ve done a lot worse for a Greinke start.. remember 7/3: DeJesus, Bert, Butler, Guillen, Olivo, Jacobs (v. a LHP), Hernandez, Maier, TPJ

You think people will remember Greinke's 2009 season in fifty years?
As one of the great seasons but with nothing to show for it?
It seems like the default season people use for that is Nolan Ryan's 1987
8-16, league-leading 2.76 ERA, league-leading 270 Ks in 211 innings.
If he ends up with a losing record while leading the league in ERA, I imagine he’ll be in the conversation with that season.
Ryan was 5th in the NL Cy Young

also, he looks hurt
past coupel starts he has looked seriously uncomfortable
-
what's his velocity
also, considering his previous problems, if he looks uncomfortable, it may not be a physical injury
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
velocity is ok
but the strikezone issues and very slow pace are disturbing

Over a fairly short span
That isn’t too horrendous really.
The bigger issue, is just that he is getting hit harder. No point sugar coating it. Some bad luck, sure, some regression and some just duff pitching.
I don’t see any reason to panic yet. Hitters adjust, it is up to Zack to do the same now.
Tell me again why I made the trip from St. Louis to KC to see this team three times?

But
did Alex keep his top hand on the bat? that’s what’s important here
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/1369523.html
Gordon now keeps both hands on the bat, which effectively shortens his swing and — the theory goes — enables him to be quicker to the ball.
(…)
Gordon had two singles Tuesday against the Mariners, followed Wednesday by his first three-hit game in more than a year — July 28, 2008, at Oakland. Even more encouraging was a line-drive homer in the fourth inning.
"Keeping two hands on the bat is giving him a shorter route to the ball," manager Trey Hillman said. "It’s taken a little of the raw power away, but he didn’t even square that one up on the good part of the bat. So it was good to see that one get out."
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
That's what Willie Bloomquist
in the outfield does for you. Dives around a lot, cool. But sucks. He had Jose for most of the year, doesn’t help.
Meanwhile, Mitch Maier, who can actually play CF sits on the bench.
We have two centerfielders on the bench
and we’re starting a 2nd baseman in center
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
jesus now a 10 pitch ab
this is just getting ridiculous

Who has had a good year?
Butler, Callaspo, Soria, Greinke (first half only). Period. Has anyone else even been passably decent?
Dejesus has been a great defender
and he’s hitting better now
by GobbleforCyoung on Aug 8, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Whats up with the Nationals
The team is fucking sick…they are beating up on Haren now. We should be rooting them not to sign Strasburg not because we want them but also because they would become instant contenders with a legitimate ace
they get a new manager and they're actually playing better
but Robert Ford said that managers don’t factor into winning games and that we should keep Trey around..

So Zach Is
Pitching in the 112th inning now?
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
we want to see if he can throw >150 pitches
on a 95 degree night – Trey is forcing the envelope.

another note on Olivo's 103 K/9 BB season
he drew 4 intentional walks in that year. He drew a walk on April 4th (game 2), May 9th (game 30), June 9th (game 58), and August 8th (game 112)
Olivo drew 2 walks on May 9th.

is it just me or
did Ryan and Frank not realize that Edgar Gonzalez was pitching?
I think I heard them refer to Gio Gonzalez as the guy pitching

Random stat: Gordon still looking for his first double of 2009
Brayan Pena has 7 in roughly the same amount of plate appearances (83 vs. 88). Who will win this doubles race by the end of the season? Just one of those little riveting races to watch during the stretch run.

Jacobs missed a cycle by a triple.
The chances of him getting a triple and me getting a triple might be the same.
if Jacobs is in line for a triple
it’d be due to the outfielder KOing himself running into the bullpen fence..
I think Jacobs is running with a shinguard on, for one thing
