fell into a sandtrap
when calling the postgame radio show to complain about John Bale getting a high leverage situation. Try to find a way to not get stuck when they ask who you’d bring in.
Now I can imitate the sound that is made when you go from being on-hold and listening to being on the air.
I just can’t type what that sound sounds like

The reminder to not curse on the radio was amusing but it makes sense. And people who have their radio up are too much. Especially since you can listen to the show on the phone.

I didn't begin the phrase
….I’m unaware who started it. I know B-Dub used it quite a bit, but I started using it and regardless of meaning it sort of assumed a life of its own. It’s like a signature phrase that I use.

the ones that got away.
Y’know how is royals fans are always like “just imagine if we would’ve kept dye, damon. beltran, sweeney together?” I believe that in the not too distant future we will add allard baird as someone we should have kept.

if we do a poll here
I don’t think the majority remember him favorably. I mean he has AWFUL drafts.

Does he?
Greinke, Butler, Gordon, Maier, Hochevar probably…
And when you consider he was limited to $1000 bonuses by the 6th round for most of his tenure, i’d say he did not bad at all really.
Baird was a lot of things, a bad scout wasn’t one of them.
The first 3, sure
especially Butler, who wasn’t a top 10 pick. But I don’t think anybody can consider the Maier pick a success and Hochevar probably either succeed or fail as a Dayton guy.
Most of my problem with the Royals drafting was how weak 2nd rounder and on are. But that might have been a budget issue with Baird. I mean, I’ll miss Baird if he become a successful GM elsewhere, but I don’t see anybody knocking down doors trying to hire him.

Dear Royals fans,
We don’t have a problem with Allard Baird’s scouting abilities.
signed,
Colt Griffin, Roscoe Crosby, Mike Stodolka, Mike Tonis, and Adam Donachie
Although, for your dismissal of the $1K club, i’d imagine that the bonuses we gave Aviles, Kaaihue, Irving Falu..
Allard Baird is a good guy to have around when you shop at the thrift store. Nobody will deny that. But completely whiffing on the 2001 draft has cost us so much. Imagine a Royals team where we drafted Kotchman, JJ Hardy, and Scott Hairston in the first 3 rounds instead of Griffin, Crosby and Matt Ferrara.

What MLB team did that BHWick?
You can’t cherry pick like that. Sure, it’s fun to think you could do that, but in reality, you can’t, and neither can top MLB scouts. You show me a single draft in the last 50 years where the top 3 picks panned out, I would almost bet you can’t do it, but luck should be on your side at least once.
by AxDxMx on Sep 1, 2009 5:19 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
sure you can't cherry pick
but I challenge you to find a recent Royals class where you have 3 picks in all the rounds paying off. I bet that’s a lot easier to find and the Royals can’t seem to do that either.

as far as top 3 picks paying off
A. Find a successful franchise, say the Braves
B. Scroll through the years.
Aha, 2002
- Dan Meyer has been really good out of the pen in Florida
- Jeff Francoeur had his moments and could still be a star
- Brian McCann, well, one of the better catchers

I'm not sure what this conversation is about
Francouer is good?
Last time I checked, Hardy is in the minors, Kotchman has less power than Gordon, and Hairston is pretty bad too.
You cannot compare Barid to Moore. Moore has been given mulitple top 3 picks and more than twice the payroll and the permission to sign FA’s/extend quality players (that’s a joke)
And Greinke wasn’t a top 5 pick btw, Butler and Dejesus have been quality players. Even Teahen has been ok being part of a package of return players
by GobbleforCyoung on Sep 1, 2009 7:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Teabag???
Are you serious? For Carlos Beltran, a player with Hall of Fame skills, we got two buttfucks and a fringe major leaguer. Give me a break. Teahen is nothing more than a role player on a contending team.
That is one huge reason that we are in the mess we’re in (and I blame the owner as much as Baird but you want to talk about bad, Baird was HISTORICALLY bad), that in the past several years, we have traded away Jermaine Dye, Johnny Damon, Carlos Beltran, Kevin Appier, David Cone and have absolutely fucking SQUAT to show for it except for one good season of Angel Berroa and a bench player.
Look no further than that to figure out why this organization is in the mess we’re in. Baird/Glass DESTROYED this franchise, and that’s one reason why I’ll cut DM a little slack in his efforts to rebuild.

Wasn't Teahen traded for Dye?
If you said Buck than I would agree with you somewhat.
It’s not Baird’s fault. The guy had no choice but to trade them. The return is pennies on the dollar. At that point it was a fact only a handful of teams didn’t have the ability to extend players – Pitt, KC, but Who else???
If you want to criticize Glass for not paying 70+ million to extend Beltran than that’s fine. The Marlins gave their franchise player a mega-deal and so did KC with Peavy. Oakland could have done the same if they had a player worthy. The problem is KC had NO ONE close to adding to a Beltran so they had to get rid of him for whatever Baird could get. It’s the situation Glass put him in, not his skill. I’m sure he took the best package he could find and atleast Teahen is one of our better players. Here’s another thing, Teahen woudl be pretty good as a full time 3b. He’s already proven it. Too bad one of Baird’s busts of a pick is fucking him up
by GobbleforCyoung on Sep 1, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Marlins - Hanley, SD - Peavy
Teams don’t have to offer KC shit for their players at that time because they knew it was a fact they couldn’t hold on to them. And Beltran was only available for a playoff run for the Astros
by GobbleforCyoung on Sep 1, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions
No, it was Beltran
Teahen came to the Royals along with Buck and Mike Wood in exchange for Beltran.
Dye got us Neifi Perez.
Damon, just to complete the trifecta, landed us Roberto Hernandez and Angel Berroa.

em
“Francoeur is good?”
For a season or 2, yes. How far did Colt Griffin go? AA Wichita?
“Last time I checked, Hardy is in the minors, Kotchman has less power than Gordon, and Hairston is pretty bad too.”
Hardy is usually an average/above average MLB SS, when’s the last time the Royals had that? Kotchman’s calling card has never been power and he isn’t the #2 overall pick, he’s a mid first round pick if my memory serves me right. Hairston is useful for a 3rd rounder, actually his career .253/.307/.458 sounds like a Dayton player to me.(actually, Jose Guillen 2008 line is .264/.300/.438)
“You cannot compare Barid to Moore. Moore has been given mulitple top 3 picks and more than twice the payroll and the permission to sign FA’s/extend quality players (that’s a joke)”
Agreed, but Larry Beinfest doesn’t really have much to work with. Billy Beane doesn’t have much to work with. Unless Baird become a successful GM(we all know he is a very good scout) elsewhere. I don’t think I’ll miss him too much.
“And Greinke wasn’t a top 5 pick btw, Butler and Dejesus have been quality players. Even Teahen has been ok being part of a package of return players”
Greinke was #6. Butler has been league average/slightly below average for a 1B(not saying he couldn’t be a quality player, just not yet). Dejesus is pretty much Baird’s only legacy.

Butler has yet to be very good, Greinke is a legacy. Buck…really?
I mean Baird’s legacy was pretty much Greinke, Dejesus and Butler. Anybody could have drafted Alex Gordon and Teahen and Buck just ain’t impressive

every one of those players is better than the players dayton has brought in....
for significantly more money.
And my point was, any players who are even close to average that are still on this team, 3 years later, are allards guys…and yes, buck has been average or close to it for his entire career.

hell
1 of 3 out of Kotchman/Hardy/Hairston would have helped out so much in the last 8 years.
Griffin, Crosby and Ferrara were the top 3, and I don’t think any of them got to Omaha, much less KC

I say this as often as I can
But nobody seems to care. “Hindsight drafting” is simply impossible because 1) nobody was going to take the guys we “should” have taken with the position we had at that time and 2) you can’t tell what those guys would have done in a different organization. For example, it’s easier to say about 2006 “We could have had Lincecum or Longoria” than to recognize that 1) we would have had Andrew Miller if we didn’t take Hochevar (which is an about even swap right now) or that 2)in the Royals organization, Lincecum would have already had the anticipated career-ending injury or Longoria would be a “moping” his way through games Omaha right now (thanks for THAT bit of news, Poz).
