Apparently the Royals still hope to make the playoffs
I imagine I'm not the only one on this message board who's on the Royals' mailing list. Well, I found the opening line of the latest e-mail, which I received yesterday, interesting:
There is something for everyone at The K during the last homestand of the 2009 regular season!
I'm so glad they specified that this is the last "regular season" homestand of 2009. I eagerly await the post-season homestands of 2009 that will no doubt follow. Meet me at the Plaza, anyone?

They just offered me
The chance to use my unused season tickets for any game during the last homestand. I passed.

I don't understand
If you have season tickets, can’t you already attend any game you want, including the last homestand?
Or do you mean you have a partial plan, and they still refer to those as “season tickets”?

It can still happen
The magic number is 3. It can still happen!!!!
Actually, with the way the schedule goes all intra-division to close out the season, I’m not sure it can.

Obviously
it’s near impossible. The Royals would have to win all 22 remaining games to end at 77-85. There is NO way to win the division. The only “hope” is a 3-way tie and win the division playoffs (I think that I have this right):
The Tigers would have to go 2-21 - beating the Twins once and the White Sox once
The Twins would have to go 7-15 - beating the Tigers 5 times and the White Sox twice
The White Sox would have to go 6-15 - beating the Tigers 5 times and the Twins once
That would produce a 3-way tie with the Tigers & Twins. The Twins and Sox could trade places if the Sox win 2 instead of 1.
At least we’re not the first team to be eliminated. Toronto, Baltimore, Washington, and Pittsburgh are already done. 4 other teams have magic numbers lower than 3. Tampa Bay’s is at 4.

I'd like to the Vegas odds
on all of this happening. It’s probably more likely that one of us will win the Powerball (Hey! That’s some good news – I could use a few million $$$).

So you're saying there's still a chance!

I blame Cleveland
for spoiling this otherwise perfectly reasonable hope.
