it is nice of davey to once again start playing good baseball when the royals' season is over...

we should trade him to the mets, im sure his september performance would actually be a positive there

Um, since the middle of April?

Or do you accuse him of accumulating 2 wins in the last two weeks?

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

For the record, DeJesus should be traded because he is good, not because he's bad

DeJesus is a good baseball player. He’s the best position player the Royals have. If the Royals were anywhere near contention (as in likely to contend in the next couple of years), then the Royals would be stupid to trade him; he’s a major asset to the team. But because the Royals are rebuilding and not close to contention, he should be traded for younger talent to help rebuild the team.

Anyone who doesn’t think DeJesus is a very good player just isn’t paying attention.

John Buck's downfall

If only this picture had Alex Gordon moping in the background, we would have a perfect illustration of how those three guys killed the Royals season

Hard to say where the boundary line is between "good" and "very good"

But for my money, a player who has averaged 3.4 WAR over the last 5 years is a very good player.

Im a little surprised that Bannister has more value than Butler...

is this because Butler is such a poor fielder?

I figured that.

Which really says something about Pujols, but he is a good 1Bman too I guess.

Yeah, the fanshot I put up showing the make-up his WAR

was partially to show how good Butler’s bat almost has to be due to his fielding and positional adjustment.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

WAR and culture

Are “wins” really an appropriate basis for measurement of player value on this club? They’re so — stop me if you’ve heard this one — immediately satisfying.

Hey D_F, what is the correlation between WAR and wins for a team?

It looks like it is pretty good, is it better then Pythag?

Go Royals!

by BabyBlues on Sep 16, 2009 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Haven't looked very closely

My guess is that it works better for individual players and projectoins, but that for particular season, Pythag (or better, PythagenPat) will correlate far better.

With WAR, it would be more interesting after a full season to calculate aech teams total WAR (adjusting for leagues, which FanGraphs hasn’t set up yet, although apparently they will this offseason), then re-run all the matchups using the odds ratio method (I think) so see how it turned out.

But I’m sure more informed people than i have thoughts on this.

I will see how hard it is to crank out the query for 30 years

It won’t be inning adjusted. That would just take too much time
