Q: Why are the Royals so good in September?
A: "Because we're awesome!" - Mark Teahen on 810 around noon on Wednesday. Both Teahen and the host had a good laugh.

Teahen went on to blame this year on injuries
I believe KK was hosting, and tried to call him out on it, and Teahen got a little defensive.
[Places hand over mic]
“Please don’t make me talk about it. They took ESPY. They have her. They’ll kill her if I say more…you saw what they did to Law and Rany, right? Blackballed them! — and they’re outside the organization!….just please, move on…”
Unless I'm wrong...
My Twitter feed
It was Soren Petro, not KK
And “I’m Awesome” or “We’re Awesome” is Teabag’s fallback answer anytime Petro asks him a question he either doesn’t know, was caught off guard by, or can’t answer.
i.e. later in the interview, he was asked…
PETRO – "Mark, why do you hit so well in the 5 hole compared to other spots in the order?
TEABAG – ….2-3 second pause…“Because I’m awesome!”
BOOM! ROASTED!
One other point
Teabag is a weekly guest on Petros show on Wednesdays, and it is CAN’T MISS radio. Teahen is such a funny guy, there have been SEVERAL times that I laughed out loud during this segment this year…
When Petro asked Mark whether or not Billy Butler knew that only 7 other MLB’er have hit 50 doubles before or at the age of 23 (which Billy is on pace to become the 8th), Teahens response was, “I don’t know if he knows already, but in case he doesn’t know about that, can we make sure that nobody listening ever tells him that. We don’t need his head getting any bigger than it already is.”
There is also GREAT information shared in this interview…Petro asked him about Hochever, and whether or not it is a common thing for a pitcher to be tipping pitches. Teahen said there has been 4 of 5 times this season, where the Royals picked up on an opponent tipping something. He said there is a “closer that we don’t face often” that throws basically splitfingers or fastballs, and he would tip it because he always initially holds the ball in a splitfinger grip, but when he switches it, they would watch his pitching hands forearm, to see the muscles moving when he was switching his grip.
I’m not sur e if these interviews are archived or not at 810whb.com, but I’d look for them if you never heard one, and have some time to kill, they are all really good.
BOOM! ROASTED!
good info
those would be nice links to have
I knew teahen wasn’t as good as he was hitting the first few months, but the way he’s fallen apart at the plate in the second half is disheartening. I’ll miss him, but it’s time.
BABIP and plate discipline chickens coming home to roost, I suppose.
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.

More valuable to another team at 3B.
Hopefully someone will give Dayton enough to make the trade this off season.
Go Royals!
when you open that link
Just scroll down on the player….unfortunately, the date isn’t shown, but there is a large # of Mark Teahen interviews…most in the 20-25 minute range…If pressed for time, just FFWD to the last 5 minutes when Soren does his “Final 4” interview questions. Always a good laugh in there…
BOOM! ROASTED!
I honestly can't tell the difference between all the voices on that station
Though I usually could guess if it was KK by the stupid stuff he’s talking about. I guess I just don’t listen enough.
I don't think I would
want to get Teahen pissed off at me. KK. might have gotten the microphone shoved down his throat.
The answer to why we are so awesome in September… because the players know the season is almost over and they want to go home as fast and as happy as they can.
It was a phone call
So he probably felt safe.
Also, Teahen took a shot at Sam Mellinger but I can’t remember what it was specifically.
The obvious answer is ...
That this is the team that should have been called up 3 months ago and this is the production we might have had
I refuse to set up a signature....DAMMIT
It is strange with the stress of 'competing' outta the way, they start to get Ws
…or is it also the relaxing of other teams they are playing that are either going to qualify for the playoffs and those that aren’t. Either way both teams involved don’t care.
They are out playing a game, which is what they should have been doing the whole time.
I blame this on the fans, their wanton desire for Ws caused this team to suck. I mean to measure a team based on wins or loses that is just ridiculous.

I see the "This team hasn't quit on Hillman" crap again with this September Surge
But I feel it’s exactly the opposite. The team has quit on him, and that has loosened them up enough to not care what happens, which in turn has resulted in much better approaches to playing.
Haha, because quitting in September is basically like using steroids.
What about the children?
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
It's random variation,
no more, no less.
I don’t buy the theory that Sept stats are meaningless, like Buddy Bell sorta thought. Just look at who we have been playing – plenty of games against opponnents with plenty to play for.
On the other hand, I don’t buy the theory that the team has “relaxed” and is playing better because there is no longer any pressure. Players are always subject to evaluation – so whether the team’s performance matters or not, individual performances ALWAYS matter.
Bottom line – 6 months is a HELLUVA long time. Random variation can explain any and all small sample results. Hell, the Nationals actually looked good for a 2 or 3 week stretch, then promptly returned to looking like the worst team in a long time like they had the previous 18 weeks since.
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

On that random variation theme
The Royals are currently experiencing one hell of a regression to the mean, with runners on base when hitting home runs. They’ve had at least five 3-run homers in the last few games that I can remember.
