Royals Lose Tight Game to Tigers
See, the Tigers cared about/were inspired by/got extra help from God because of Ernie Harwell tonight. Now last night? Or other days during the intervening period when they knew dude was on his way out? No, they didn't give a damn then.
Nice game by Mitch Maier tonight and a solid start by DiNardo. Still, a loss.

There Are No
Good wins or bad losses at this juncture; bring up the Naturals, damn it!

Just home from a trip to an Ames bar to watch the game.
It is amazing how big Butts look on a 73" screen. Speaking of Butts, I sorry folks no matter how hard we want him to be a first baseman. He just isn’t one. His lousy defense far outweighs his offensive potential. As I said on another post… if we would have drafted Smoak in stead of Hosmer… we would have had our 1B/DH positions solved for a very long time. OUr defense and our baserunning skills or lack there of on both cost us the game. Gordon looked like he had never played 3B and Billy’s not making a play that all 1B must make cost us a inning ending doubleplay. It was a tough scoop but when you play that position you have to be able to make the plays and he can’t. He can’t guys.
Mitch is starting to hit and we have to remember that he has had maybe a month of fulltime play from Hillfart. I think he has some talent and will probably be our CF or RF next season. I have a feeling that DeJ, Anderson, and Mitchy could end up being our outfield in 2010. Lastly, I am looking at DiNardo and wondering why we screwed around with Pontoon, Horacio, and Chen in the first place. He is never going to be a power pitcher but he gives you five or six good innings and he does keep you in games. He has to have a good defense behind him and ours is laughable. Only two and half weeks left in this epic disaster.

when are people going to get past an obsession with 1B defense
Billy’s problem is that he hits like Mauer in KC and hits like Bloomquist on the road. Ideally you don’t put Butler in the 3 hole on the road, but it’s not like this team wants to acknowledge how the K helps hitters out

I will get past 1b defense we have some.
Billy is not a first baseman. I am surprised he hasn’t hurt himself so far this year. He is and would be a great DH. All they have do is bring up Kia. Oh ya and his little gaff during the doubleplay quite possibly cost us the game. Not important now but if we were in contention for the playoffs it would be.

1st base defense is only noticable when it's really good or really bad
here is what a decent 1st baseman should be able to do on defense
1) catch most throws
2) catch line drives hit right at him or within a few feet
3) handle ground balls hit around him
there might be a few other things
but how many wins is the difference between a mediocre defender and a good one at first?
anyways, the team’s lousy offense puts a lot of pressure on the pitching and defense, leading to their failures being more critical. When you improve the offense, you can reduce the stress on the pitching and defense and make things a lot better

The Worst Defenders
Of all time have been hidden at 1B and LF. Before the DH and in the NL today, this is the traditional wisdom. The bat has to make up for it, and I think Manatee fits the bill. He’s not near as bad as some I’ve seen.

By all accounts Kila has an iron glove too
Quite possibly worse than Billy.
Billy is fine. He’s never going to win a gold glove, but who cares? He’s not awful.

where in ames do you watch games?
I go to isu, but I’m interning this semester in amana. Soo I get to live in the interesting iowa city. But ill be back in b e a utiful, lames iowa in january.
Earlier this season es tas would have 5 or 6 different games on and you’d see all different team gear, was fun. Can anyone else think of a sport where people are more into it midseason than the playoffs? Except baseball I can’t.
At least Wally Joyner's not on the team....

Westowne Pub.... on South Dakota.
One guy wanted to watch the Boston game and we yelled him down. I think the bartender was intimidated by 5 old farts screaming at him to watch the Royals game. Well, I don’t know how beautiful Ames will be in January but the Amanas should be wonderful the next couple weeks.

WTH was with Hillman bunting with Maier when we were down 1 and nobody out. Maier couldn’t do it and then looped a single into CF. DDJ went 1st to 3rd and Maier looked pissed. That was a much better outcome than a sacrifice bunt.

I'm normally a staunch anti-bunting guy,
but in that case, I can see Hillman’s logic.
What shocked me was Detroit going against traditional thinking and NOT taking the DP on Butler’s grounder. Most teams, playing at home, would gladly trade 2 outs for the tying run in that situation.
What was NOT shocking about it was the Royals letting them off the hook for their blunder.
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
