You know he'd lose 1-0

With a 20 K 1 hit game (the one hit being a double brought home by a sac fly) and Sabathia scattered 8 hits, struck out 7, and won- well, we know how that voting would go…

This lineup is hideous.

I wonder how good Butler’s numbers would look if he actually had a guy hitting ahead of him (instead of Bloomy) that actually got on base and if he had a guy hitting behind him who was actually a threat to hit the ball.

Some other mindless banter topic for today (RE: Whither Gil Meche?)

I was looking through the “What will it take” thread, which was a great idea and have one thing I’d like to throw out there. There’s quite a bit of trade Meche this offseason talk. This seems like an ultimate sell low. We all agree that he was hurt most of this year, right? Not only that, but he could be a very valuable piece to quite a few teams.

There seems to be this curve with (signed) player trade value. It starts out at its lowest because if a team had wanted the player more than you, they could have just signed him for more. If a player is worth more than their contract, then it starts rising fairly quickly. It seems for a quality pitcher, this peaks either the trade deadline before he becomes a free agent or could be any time in the previous offseason or two, depending on if teams think they have a chance to contend and the supply of pitching.

So, wouldn’t it be better, with Meche coming off a hurt year, to hold onto him? If he comes back next year and shows that he was just overused and injured this year, then you have a huge chip come next trade deadline. Or, if not, wait until the 2010 deadline.

I think a lot of teams right now would want to buy him on the cheap since his value is down but wouldn’t give any sort of decent value. But what if he bounces back- a pretty good possibility- and his value goes way up in team’s minds and we drastically increase our return.

by sterlingice on Sep 17, 2009 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

I was in the trade Meche camp,

but I now think they must hold on to him – at least until he regains his value by pitching well.

Thanks again, Hillman, for that 132 pitch shutout with a 5 run lead that ruined one of the organization’s biggest assets.

When watching Zack, this is what I obsess about:

14 pitches times 9 innings = 126 pitch pace.

Fortunately, Soria very fresh today – probably for up to 2 innings if needed. Hasn’t always been the case when Zack starts…

by loyal2sdad on Sep 17, 2009 1:31 PM EDT reply actions

Love this:

scoreless inning for Greinke and his ERA drops only by .01

If he pitches 28 innings in the last 4 starts, I believe he can only allow 1 ER in order to get his ERA below 2.00

Surely that would clinch the Cy Young by itself?

Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

by loyal2sdad on Sep 17, 2009 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, from another thread after his last start:

If Zack gets his ERA below 2, I don’t think there’s any way he avoids the Cy Young even if he ends at 13-10. Tho we might hear some more stupid "Mariano for Cy Young" crap. Even the stat neophytes love ERA and below 2 is hard to ignore. Tho, again, if MLBN is any indication, we’d get idiots like Harold Reynolds talking about how CC’s and Halladay’s ERAs in the AL East are better than Zack’s in the Central.

As it stands, he has 50 ERs in 205.1 IPs for a 2.19 ERA. So, if my calculations are correct, he’d need 21 scoreless innings to drop to 1.99. Giving up just 1 run, requires him to stretch out to 25.1 innings, 2 runs is 30 innings flat, and 3 runs is 34.1. Beyond that, we’re getting out beyond what he can conceivably pitch.

By my count, if they go every 5th game, here’s Zack’s remaining schedule:
Sept 17th @ Det
Sept 22nd vs Bos
Sept 27th vs Min
Oct 3rd @ Min

There are 2 off days and those could throw a wrinkle in things
Mon Sept 14th
Thurs Oct 1st

by sterlingice on Sep 17, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Harold Reynolds IS an idiot

You would think, in this day and age of technology, that he would know how to look up and find that there is VIRTUALLY NO DIFFERENCE in the quality of the opponents faced by the major Cy Young candidates. It can be looked up VERY SIMPLY on BP.

Simply put – the theory that it has been harder for C C and Doc because they pitch in the AL East is SIMPLY NOT TRUE.

Maybe

the Royals should consider giving him an extra day of rest 2 starts from now – that way he could face the Yankees in New York on Monday instead of the Twins in KC on Sunday.

Yeah, that would be a gamble – but if he pitches well, maybe THEN it would open the eyes of the voters. (He would then have pitched against both Boston and New York – the apparent dual centers of the AL universe)
