Great, great news
let’s hope this is the first of many good moves/pieces of news from the Royals. I still would have preferred Grant Green just b/c it was more of a position of need, but from the looks of our pitching situation we need starting pitchers as well.
Now this really gives DM something to Crow about…

I really wanted the SS too
But one sure way to screw up drafts is to draft for need. Even in the NFL, need based drafting rarely works out. Best Player Available is really the only choice, and I think the Royals did that here. Though Green was not a reach at all, seeing as how he went shortly after the Royals pick. So I guess it would have been a case of need and BPA coinciding.

other than taking the QB
or the solid OL. Every other position is crap.

That's why the Royals' drafts were bad for so long

They took Marino and Elway
How many more QBs do you want them to take? I think Jeff Granger was a QB for A&M too.

That is a pretty large spread...
I guess that poster at Chiefs Planet was right last night that the deal was basically done and would be announced shortly.

Expect to see him at some point next year, you'd think
by oc on Sep 17, 2009 1:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I believe Piccolo
Said he would start next year at NW Arkansas. Although I would guess they may try to limit his innings since he barely pitched this year. Probably 2011 is when we see him make an impact.

Do you mean maybe a Sept call up in our shitty 2010 season
And then making an impact in a hope-filled 2011? Or not seeing Kauffman untill 2011?

Probably a call up in 2010
And joining the rotation for good in 2011.

We don’t believe in those, we need tom compete in September. Not take a look at guys to evaluate them.

that seems a little quick
i can’t see him touching the majors next year unless he proves himself to be extra special from day 1. i predict mid to late season in 2011 is when he’ll make his first appearance.

If he takes the Hooch path
He’ll be up at september next year and for good(ish) in 2011.

JJ Piccolo denies anything has been signed
Royals official: No agreement yet with Aaron Crow
“Apparently Buster Olney knows something we don’t know,” said J.J. Picollo, Royals assistant general manager-scouting and player development.
“There’s nothing to report on, there’s no confirmed deal or anything. We’ve picked up the talks with them the last couple of days and that’s about it. We’re working at it.”

So in the cycle
We hear from Aaron’s dad that he’s come to an agreement. Two weeks later, the Royals fly a balloon to Olney and don’t tell their front office staff. Then the deal goes to the commish who takes away our all star game. Then we officiallly announce Crow as the newest member of the Royals.

It's now official
Aren’t you glad the Royals went through all of that trouble to try to embarrass Buster Olney today?
by bas on Sep 17, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
"The agreement covers a three-year Major League contract, beginning in 2010. Consistent with team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed."
OK, help me out…
We sign him to a 3 year MLB deal that starts next year. So we have him under contract for 3 years…and then 3 arbitration years after that?
Doesn’t it seem like the Royals took a situation where they had HIGH, EXTREMELY HIGH leverage and just gave the player a sweetheart deal by giving him a 3 year MLB deal?
BOOM! ROASTED!
by GoBabies!! on Sep 17, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not much risk though
They’re not going to release him in the next three years no matter what. I don’t see the MLB deal as that big a deal. He’s going to be a MLBer pretty soon.
I’m wondering what the financial terms were. I would guess $3 million and I’d be shocked if it was more than $3.5 million.

Baseball America
reports 3 million, but he can earn up to 4.5 if he serves all his time in the majors.

Only things that I think it means
(Emphasis on the “I think”)
1) He’s got to be on the 40-man roster
2) He gets merchandising royalties, which is more money and gets to be in video games immediately!
3) He immediately gets (at least) major league minimum each year instead of minor league money (on top of any bonus money) (Okay, I’m not really certain on this one).
I believe the arbitration clock is based on service time, just as free agency is. So, he’s got to have three years (or 2 and whatever for super-2 status) of major league service time before arbitration.
If you look closely, it really says "CentralChamps2012."

I knew he took a spot on the 40 man, which, shouldn’t be a big deal, there are a few guys (Lisson, Marte, Yabuta, amongst others) that can easily be jettisoned.
I tend to think that Arbitration IS based on service time…that being said, for some reason, I have a past draft pick in my mind, but I can’t remember who (was it Hochevar?) that the big sticking point was the player wanted a MLB deal, and the club didn’t want to offer it. Again, if memory serves, service time was the big reason they didn’t want to offer it (But since I can’t remember the player in question, or even if the player was a Royal or not, I could very well be making the whole thing up)

I think it has more to do with money, and how soon the player will be in MLB
A 40 Man roster spot is very valuable to most teams (but not the Royals as they have too much crap). Service time counts exclusively as time in MLB, as that’s the reason we delayed Gordon’s Arb clock. Putting Crow on the 40 man is one less Rule 5 eligible player we can protect.
by AxDxMx on Sep 18, 2009 2:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're absolutely right
He gets MLB minimum salary (in addition to his $3 mill bonus), he must be on the 40 man (meaning he must option years to be sent to the minors). It does not affect his service time directly.

Well it's certainly not compared to that
It just seems like he got a pretty good deal as the Royals must have really wanted him in the AFL and said dammit, the difference is too small to miss that. We’re caving. And I don’t blame them, but they probably could have gotten a little better deal if they held out some more.
by AxDxMx on Sep 18, 2009 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
$4.5M at max ($3M guaranteed, $1.5M potential bonuses)
remember when the Royals were offering $3M and I was saying they’d need to go higher
yeah…

Not bad
So by sitting out a year and a half, Crow ended up losing 500K dollars? (+the year of service time)
