If the Royals are ever, you know, in contention in September
they’re not going to let Steve Stewart do radio play-by-play solo for entire games, are they?
they might want to poke Denny or Fred to do road trips to states that border Missouri
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
That seems a completely theoretical question. :)
by hunter s. royal on Sep 18, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Buddy's return is not much more farfetched
than Royals near term contention. We are in a sorry division, but Dayton’s scorning of OBP and defense seems a rather fatal flaw in the makeup of a MLB team. Greinke has had a brilliant season, and we’re still not competitive. :(
by hunter s. royal on Sep 18, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions
In that case
perhaps the other reasons not to let Steve Stewart do 9 innings of play-by-play will suffice.
I should apologize for the snark.
I rarely listen to the radio broadcasts. Is Stewart that bumbling? I hear a lot of criticism of Bob Davis, but I’m not sure if that is valid, or simply MU fans that despise anything Kansas. (Not surprising, if Chris Gervino of MU did the games, I’m sure plenty of Kansas fans would complain.)
by hunter s. royal on Sep 18, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
No apology necessary. I like listening to the radio while I’m working or walking, which is why I hear these guys a lot. I have no connections to any institutions that are likely to be pro-Davis or anti-Davis.
I think Davis is boring, at least when broadcasting baseball. I’ve only ever heard him do one basketball game, and that was a blowout so it isn’t fair to judge him on that basis. For baseball, he fills the time enumerating the obvious potential outcomes of the situation. Canonical example: “Another bad one here will load the bases!” Try this: whenever he says something like that, say, “I did not know that, Bob!” and drink. Guaranteed you won’t remember anything after the 4th inning.
Stewart is even worse at holding my attention. No gravity, no drama, no rhythm, no insight. Honestly the only time he said anything interesting to me — not worthwhile, but interesting — was when he made uninformed comments about salary caps and other issues during spring training. He sounded like an ownership lobbyist. I’m quite sure that after he washes out of big time broadcasting his next job isn’t going to be in labor relations. Maybe he’s hoping to earn himself a minor function in the commissioner’s office.
The Royals seem to be accumulating those types.(Ryan)
Luckily the former Royals on the broadcasts are not usually so company line.
by hunter s. royal on Sep 18, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Not surprising
when you consider that the reason Glass got the ownership nod in the first place was his vehement anti-labor stance during the 1994 work stoppage.
Anyway, I’ll just have to remind myself to outlive the Glass’ ownership of the Royals. Of course I’m hoping to outlive the co-opting of the commissioner’s office as well (big fan of Giamatti here), and I think that will pretty much take care of it. If it ever happens. Probably requires Congressional intervention or something.
ha
turns out my fantasy team was doing pretty well… here is the lineup for the last 5 months without me checking on it
Mauer, Pujols, Kinsler, Longoria, Alexei Ramirez, Ichiro, Bay, Dunn, Ryan Howard
Liriano, Beckett, Soria, Jenks
If the P count with SP and RP, then I’m getting more points out of King Felix, Shields, and Ziegler

update on my poorly managed fantasy team
we’re down 8-5 in the championship series, which ends on Sunday. I just picked up Pedro and Jon Lester for tomorrow (dumping Ziegler and Lirano)
I’m down 27-11 2/3 in IP, 32-14 in Ks, tied in saves and home runs, up 974-758 in OPS, and down 3.86-1.33 in ERA
His pitchers are Greinke, Lincecum, Sabathia, Lee, Harden, Pabelbon, Mariano

I think
he’s trying to reduce to absurdity the arguments in favor disregarding other player’s performances. So I’d guess he’s a snarky antidisawardiantarianist.
And a poor one, at that.

Why do we draw the line at physical performance enhancers, but not mental ones? The whole thing is silly.

Play like this in July, July and at least August
these hot streaks when the season is shot does nothing but piss people off.
Maybe I'm just gullible/unrealistically (for the Royals) optimistic
But I’m genuinely encouraged to see Tejeda, Maier, Gordon, Butler and Hochevar ending the year well, and I hope it will carry over to 2010.
Its easy to play when there is no pressure
This is the same September they had last year. That transferred beautifully to this season.
They made it interesting for a month!
Before injuries destroyed the season.

"This is the same September they had last year"
1) Tejeda wasn’t starting this year, so I think this is a legitimate new development.
2) Gordon did have a quality September last year (.923 OPS), but it’s not his fault that didn’t transfer. And I’m looking for any encouraging signs of his recover going forward for 2010.
3) Mitch Maier had a terrible September last year (.508), the 2nd half 2010 is the only time he’s shown real promise.
4) Luke Hochevar didn’t pitch last year in September, and was 0-4, 6.08 in August. This year is the first time he’s shown flashes of his actual potential, tonight included.
5) Butler is pretty well established at this point, but last September he hit a meh .274.

For those wondering about Olivo and WAR
He is up to about 2.0 WAR now, or worth about 9 Million a year, so 3.3 seems to be a good deal. He is basically above leauge average with the split playing time so far, or in other words, our second best position player so far this year behind DDJ, if you extend out Olivo’s playing time. This does not include his defense yet however.
Go Royals!

An outside shot at the Royals season record! (If they would allow numbers-by-position in the record book.)
- Olivo’s 2 HR tonight, and 3 others, not included because they came from the DH slot.
In case you're wondering
no, it’s not a hoax. 10 runs for KCR, two bombs for Olivo, and Hoch is pitching a 2-hitter through 7.
That Grovers Mill, New Jersey thing? That was a hoax.
So when does Butler steal a base

WTF? why couldn’t we have played 1/2 this well earlier? I realize the Tigers, Twins, and Sox suck but they are all notionally competing for a playoff spot. From 18-11 to the end of August we went 33-70. Just make that 43-60 which is about what our winning % for that period would be based on pythag and we’re 69-77, 3 games out of 3rd place which is about what we all thought we’d be, maybe a little worse. Even then, I realize that 69-77 isn’t great but consider where we all thought we would be it would make a big difference in perception. Not really justifying anything it’s just goddamn frustrating that they couldn’t have played a little bit better throughout the year.
