I think it's crap that Dusty Hughes gets the loss. I understand that MLB scoring is funky, but there is no way he deserves a loss. I petition that the official scorekeeper change the loss (which he can do as he determines who gets it) to Yabuta who is stealing money from the Royals. I can't wait for him to come off the books.

I should mention
Hughes left the game in the 5th after a 1-1 pitch. He left the game before throwing another. Because there were 2 balls when Yabuta came in, the next 2 that YY threw are charged to Hughes giving him the baserunner. Yabuta then procedes to give up a hit, a 4 pitch walk, and then a grand slam on a 3-1 fastball after going 3-0. In no way did Dusty Hughes contribute to the loss tonight.

Also, any word on the injury?

isn't this the second time that Yabuta came in to spell someone who just left with an injury
only to give up tons of runs in just an inning or so?
what the fuck is Trey’s malfunction about having a guy who threw 62 2/3 innings in 58 games in 2007 as a long-reliever in times of injury?

You are finally coming around to the notion
That pitcher wins and losses are complete and utter bunk.
For the record
the official scorer does not have the leeway to decide which pitcher “deserves” the loss; the losing pitcher is the pitcher responsible for the run which gives the opposition a lead which they do not relinquish, period, end of story.
It’s the win which the official scorer has latitude in determining (but only if the starting pitcher fails to go 5 and would otherwise have been eligible for the win).
So, as shitty as it was, the scorer had no choice but to saddle Hughes with the loss.
This space for rent.

Not compelled to dispute that rule
But it does seem kind of funky to have a pitcher be responsible for a batter who is still at the plate when he leaves the game. That would be the rule to dispute and hopefully change.
Or at least, an exemption clause should be put in for a horrible Japanese pitcher.
I was thinking about this and in college, I came into a game as a RP. We were losing something like 13-10 in one of those blowout type college games. I’m not sure what inning it was, something like the 5th or 6th.
Anyway, we tied it up eventually. So, two innings after I had come into the game we made an error on a routine grounder with no outs. The runner gets to 2nd base as the ball rolled behind our 3B. They bunted him to 3rd. With one out, I struck the guy out to make it two outs, runner on third. Anyway, it’s 0-1 on the better and my catcher throws the ball over my head into center field allowing the run to score. No one else scores the rest of the game. We lose by one and I get a the loss…. unbelievable.

i think most pitchers who've pitched a significant amount have stories like that
i had a game in legion ball where i pitched a CG 1 hitter….on a bunt in the 4th inning that i lost in the bottom of the 7th 1-0 b/c of a 4 base error on a routine fly ball to CF…to make it worse, it was to a team that had a bunch of dbags who we always partied with on it

It's the W/L stat that hurts baseball.
Everyone should be a winner!
