10 Greatest moments in recent Royals history?
I saw a link to <a href=http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/ten-greatest-pirate-moments-in-their-recent-history/>this article</a> in Sports Illustrated, and I was wondering if we could come up with a decent "10 Greatest Moments in Recent Royals History".
Some possibilities:
- Win # 82 in 2003
- Opening Day come-from-behind victory in 2004
- Opening Day come-from-behind victory in 2008
- Series of walk-off victories in April 2000 <a href=http://royalsretro.blogspot.com/2008/08/2000-in-box-record-77-85-4th-place-18.html>(see here)</a>
- Zack's 1-hitter
- Zack's 15-strikeout game
- Pair of 17-run games in June 2007
- 26-run victory over Tigers in September of 2004
That's just off the top of my head, though I'm sure you guys can come up with a bunch of others. No sarcasm, no off-field moments, no full seasons. Only single game or sets of games close together are to be considered "moments."

DeJesus' Grass Creek walk off home run?
That game was a fun one to be at

Blast, messed up my coding
Hmmm
Beltran’s walk off on opening day 2004.
DDJ’s walk off last year against Seattle (and him celebrating before it was even clear it was going over the fence)
Zack’s 1 hitter
Macdougal making Pujols look absolutely ridiculous in whatever year that was.
Luke’s 80 pitch CG this year. Forget the crappy opposition, it was a lot of fun.
Soria buckling David Wright’s knees in the 2008 ASG
The Sweep in St Louis last year.
Just a few highlights off the top of my head
MacDougal vs. Pujols was in 2003
It was the final pitch a Royal would throw in old Busch Stadium. Gave the Royals 2 wins out of 3.
I also agree with putting the sweep in St. Louis on the list.
You said no off-field moments
which excludes the great press conference Greinke did when his contract was announced. Too bad, as that’s going to be my favorite Royal moment of 2009.
I kind of liked Emil Brown shooting that reporter in the eye.
It was really close to the field, it was in the clubhouse.

The comeback against Kerry Wood and the Indians that I was at
It rekindled hope for one brief, flickering moment.
Others:
Sweeping the Tigers to end the season and losing the #1 pick while taking the division away from them and giving them the wildcard.
8/14/08 Yankee Stadium, Royals score 1 off Rivera in the top of the 9th to take the lead, Soria comes in and slams the door for the save in the bottom
It would have been a dream game if it closed out an ALCS, but it got lost in last seasons terrible August.
that was awesome, I remember driving home had that on the radio, nearly drove off the road
once the Yanks got Mexicuted.

I like the game where Sweeney stole home against the Yanks
Don’t remember what year, ’02 maybe?
Macdougal against Pujols
He also did Bonds and Frank Thomas that way in ’03. It was really exciting.
15 years ago count?
Hamelin’s walk off HR during the 14 in a row in ’94 before the strike. I was there with the flu and I felt unsick for the 20 minutes after the bomb.
#1 absolutely has to be Opening Day 2004
Don’t forget Mendy’s homer. That was what made it all possible :)
Pena was manager then

Nice catch.
I forgot he was even here. I had erased it from my mind. Though I don’t remember Pena making the dumb moves that Bell and Hillman have made with lineups and bullpens and messing with individual players for that matter.
I don't recall such either
I think he could have been better for us than either of them with the kind of team Dayton put together, but what can I say? He quit, he wasn’t fired.

Hiring Seitz at hitting coach
since I played softball with him here and there the past 5 years. Guy told the best stories after the games in the parking lot.
All those games in '99 and 2000
with sweeney, dye, beltran, damon, and the rest. Well…until Blowtallico in the 9th.
Who can forget
Teahen’s “inside the park homerun” (assist: Young) against the Twins?
This space for rent.
that was stud, probably the most "grity-est" play in recent history

A few off the top of my head
Opening Day 2007- Tony Pena Jr has two triples, Gil debuts, Royals rock Schilling
Royals score 17 vs. the Cards
Aviles takes St. Louis deep at Busch
Ken Harvey walk off vs. Detroit in 2003
Royals set (or tie?) AL record for doubles in a game as they route the Yanks with Appier on the mound in 2003
Beltran walk off homer in extra innings on national TV vs. Seattle in 2003

I think I was at the Yankees doubles game
I thought the record tied was by both teams for doubles in a game. Either way, there were a ton of hits, and a ton of XBHs. It was awesome.
I was going to nominate "Going 18-11"
but I guess that wasn’t a “moment”, although it didn’t last long.

Here's one:
Father’s day, 2003. Sweeney with the walk-off 2 run single to right-center, scoring man from 3rd and Guiel from 1st with 2 outs, on 3-2 pitch.
VERY exciting at the time, as team was contending, and playing with some national exposure as this was a good SF team during the height of Barry mania.

Now that I've posted a serious answer, can I add a comment?
Looking thru these – and yeah, while I can say there were some exciting moments, I have to say they all PALE in comparison to the exciting moments that came prior to however we are defining “recent” here.
Sigh.
For the sake of our younger fans, I really hope this franchise can reward you with some moments more significant than these in the future. You certainly deserve it, for sticking with this moribound franchise.
