Game 150 Open Thread - Red Sox (89-59) at Royals (61-88)

Boston Red Sox at Kansas City Royals, Sep 21, 2009 8:10 PM EDT

Star-divide

You know, the pitching matchups in this series are not actually setup bad for the Royals. Aside from the fourth game, which involves a Dusty Hughes start, the Royals have every reason to be in the game by the time the bullpens get involved. Sure, the Red Sox have a better bullpen and a much better lineup, but a split in this series, if not a 3-1 Royals win, would not surprise me.

(Ducking)

Tonight's matchup is Wakefield (he of the worst contract in baseball from a player's perspective) against Lenny DiNardo. With these guys pitching in front of two of the worst defenses in the league, expect base hits.

I still havent figured out why he was there. He seemed like he hated kids, hated baseball and I’m pretty sure we weren’t paying him.

My wife has a conference in Monterey and I'll be joining her

But we’ll basically be going to the aquarium Thursday and then driving up that evening

by sterlingice on Sep 21, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Monterey is great, the Aquarium is great

The most direct route from Monterey to San Francisco takes you over the Santa Cruz Mountains via Highway 17, which is a little hair-raising (to be avoided during commute hours but scenic), then 280 up the peninsula.

Google and mapquest have me going down 101 to 156- poor choice?

Actually, I’d kindof like to take 2 different ways. The first would be after rush hour (hopefully) Wednesday as my plane gets in around 7:30 so I’d be leaving SFO at 8ish.

The second time would be to get back, probably leaving Monterey after dinner Thursday, around 6 or 7ish.

Any thoughts as how to get the best scenery and avoid the best traffic? I’ll be going it alone the first time and with my wife the second so the better scenery would be better reserved for the second time.

by sterlingice on Sep 21, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

156

280 / 17 is definitely the better scenery, but you’ll be leaving Monterey late enough that it’ll just be getting dark as you pass through San Jose.

When you get in, 101 out of SFO to 156 is probably fine. It’ll be dark already anyway, so scenery schmenery. I was thinking of 152 between Gilroy and Watsonville as the windy road over the hills, not 156. I’m not sure now if I’ve ever been on 156.

by 2X2L on Sep 21, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s going to be mild in the city and next to the Bay, cool at night, and hot if you go anywhere else, such as Wine Country.

BART’s a system for which the fare is calculated according to the route you’re taking. You pay, retain your ticket, and then put your ticket through again when you exit. It’s not always easy to get change (depends on how well the machines are working in whatever stations you’re going through), so bring some small bills and some coins with you.

by 2X2L on Sep 21, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Cool, thanks :)

It’s been one of my top cities to want to visit for a while now and with my wife having a conference in Monterey and plane fares still reasonably cheap (about $250 to fly cross country from Richmond), we made it happen.

The big sacrifice we had to make was that we’re staying down by the airport so we have to travel to get into the city. I have had absolutely no luck getting a good Priceline deal, tho I suppose there’s still a couple of days left to try.

So two questions

1. Has any pitcher ever thrown a no-hitter, but gave up at least one earned run, and still won the game?

and

2. What’s the longest a game has gone with no hits from either team?

Thanks for your help!

by eXCell1st on Sep 21, 2009 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

1. Yes, a number of times. Last time by Joe Cowley, Sept. 19, 1986.

Awesome

Thanks so much man. Do you know the answer to the longest game question?

by eXCell1st on Sep 21, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

2. 9 innings. May 2, 1917, Cincinnati vs. Chicago, Fred Toney vs. Hippo Vaughn.

I think we all agree that its ridiculous, but at this point its pretty expected.

That's too bad, George Strait is country music.

Acceptable answers for everything I hate about country music include (but not limited too):

Kenny Chesney
Toby Keith
Big and Rich
