2010: Reality
There are currently a lot of posts about the 2010 Royals and the roster moves they can make to compete next year. I just want to say that most of them are misguided and nothing more than wishful thinking.
My main objections to these post are with the following claims.
- "The Royals can cut or trade Jose Guillen" No we cannot. He's owed a ridiculous $12 Million next year. Nobody else is going to pay his salary, much less give us any prospects for the pleasure. It's just not going to happen.
- "The Royals should trade David DeJesus" Why in the world would we trade one of our best players who has a very favorable contract? Apparently these KC fans under-value DDJ. He's very dependable, durable and, dare I say, consistent. Since June, he's hitting .306/.377/.464/.841. He had a bad start to the season but c'mon, we need him on this team.
- "The Royals will sign some free agents this off-season" Actually the Royals will probably reduce payroll this off-season -- I'd say in the neighborhood of $5 Million. I fully expect the Royals to turn to cheaper (ie internal) options for next years' roster. Say goodbye to two of Coco Crisp, Mike Jacobs and Miguel Olivo (probably Crisp and Jacobs) and hello to some minor leaguers. Same for the bullpen. Expect Glass to be pacing himself in 2010 and pooling resources for 2011 when the Jose Guillen debacle is finally off the books.
Let this be a reality check. I think the tighter budget will actually help Moore. There will be no more 2yr/$9MM contracts this off-season. If Moore thinks the Royals can contend in 2010, Glass is putting a stop to that with the payroll reduction. Even though 2009 started and ended well, there's no reason to think we can contend in 2010. I'm glad that Glass realizes this even if some fans and Dayton Moore don't.

yes, you can depend on davey to be terrible on the bases.
durable?…really?
consistent in the incredible rate at which he can inject ‘ya know’ into his interviews
putting aside my davey hatred, it makes no sense to keep him around. He’s decent and he’s relatively cheap. He’s also likely on the downslide. He has no value on this team unless you’re really concerned about 72 wins instead of 70 in 2010. He could have some value to a contender though….and he could bring us some value for the 2011-2017 years when we’re hopefully competing consistently.

if you're going to use the 72 wins argument
you can justify getting rid of everyone. I know you hate DDJ and that’s fine. But the Royals need someone on offense besides Billy Butler and I think DDJ is good for that.

for that matter, why aren't you pushing for every decent player on this roster to be traded?

Because the target date for contention (for most RR readers from what I've gathered)
is 2011-12. By that time, DDJ’s value will most likely be much lower than it is now. Ship him for a couple of AA guys who will be around for that year.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Those AA guys
Aren’t ever going to be worth what DDJ brings in value. No one’s going to give top-flight can’t miss prospects for DDJ, and anything less isn’t worth losing him.
If you look closely, it really says "CentralChamps2012."

4 years down the road, the AA player could easily be worth what DDJ is worth.
Not to mention, DDJ could be an 8 WAR player next year and the Royals still won’t make the playoffs. Might as well get some help for the future.
I honestly don’t get what’s so hard to understand about that.

Rather than replacing Jamey Wright in the bullpen
I think Disco Hayes is better suited to replacing Dayton Moore in the Front Office.
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.

Guillen can be cut
Something tells me Glass frowns on a wasted $12M though. Best case scenario, he starts hot and we trade him and pay a signifcant portion of his salary. Is that likely? I’d say it’s probably 1 in a million.
What will happen
We’ll bring back most everyone, trade Teahen for a crappy center fielder, sign a vet, over the hill starting pitcher like Brandon Backe, or maybe a reclamation project like Daniel Cabrera, and Dayton will think we’re pretty close to contending if we stay healthy.

Mark Teahen for Gary Matthews Jr.

That sounds suspiciously like what's happened every year for as long as I can remember.
Only the names have changed.
