Nick Schwartz to retire
Apparently he is retiring as of the end of the season. DM says all the right things about asking him to reconsider, etc.

don't worry
according to the Royals, Rany was out of line b/c NS was just a minor figure in the team’s handling of injuries
!
minor figure to say the least
The trainer is not the team doctor. He is not the team surgeon or orthopedist. He is not the strength and conditioning coach. He is not the medical director or the physical therapist. The Royals front office lists SEVEN MDs on staff plus a chiropractor. Schwartz was not responsible for medical diagnoses, or for failing to order appropriate tests, or for mishandling serious injuries. Those aren’t his areas of responsibility or expertise. He is the bandage man. He carries his little numbing spray and checks to see if an ankle looks broken.
Rany’s breathless rant was as incomprehensible as it was out of line by focusing on Schwartz. The Royals are an organization that does virtually everything wrong, including the treatment and prevention of injuries. Schwartz simply has the misfortune of being the face of the team’s medical staff because he is the one we see. But he is a very minor figure on that staff and has been unfairly maligned. If he were the worst trainer in baseball he still couldn’t be responsible for our injury problems if he tried, short of substituting a ball-peen hammer whack for the Lidocaine. Good luck, Nick, you deserve better.

Wouldn't he also then be responsible for noticing when guys don't look ok?
“Hey, it looks like Crisp’s arms might be falling off?”
“Anyone notice that Aviles can’t make the throw to 1B anymore and winces after throws?”
(Not that he would be the only one responsible)
Unless I'm wrong...

I couldn't tell you
but I do know these were eventually found out to be serious problems and we still at that point fumbled our handling of them, long after passing beyond Schwartz’s pay grade. He’s a nice guy who might be a great trainer or a lousy trainer, but there’s no way he’s responsible for a tenth of what Rany piled on him.

I hope he gets a job as a consultant for the White Sox.

There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Which is apt really, Dayton has a rather narrow view of the (baseball) world also. SPEED!
Rany has changed the banner on his blog site
But has not allowed himself to actually comment.

Well,
I guess this will make a nice research project 5 years down the road.
Swartz may not be the doctor, but isn’t the trainer the guy in charge of rehab and day to day stuff?
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
I hope the picture looks very different 5 years from now
and I think you’re right about Schwartz’s role, but our injury problems tend to be that once we identify a problem we fail to test it thoroughly and treat it properly, not that we suffer more injuries overall than most clubs, except when we do stupid things like overusing an obviously struggling pitcher or contract injury-prone players. We’ve even read stories recently about how low an opinion our own minor leaguers have of the organization’s handling of medical issues. These problems extend far beyond Nick’s reach. Hopefully the Royals are learning from mistakes and the condition will improve because of changed organizational behavior.
