Some Trade Target Possibilities
So while I was browsing yesterday I managed to catch this post from MLBTraderumors.com. In this article it talks about some of the possible players on the trade market for this offseason.
These players are as follows:
- Roy Halladay
- Carl Crawford
- B.J. Upton
- Felix Hernandez
- Josh Johnson (TBC player profile as SBN didn't load a profile for him)
- Adrian Gonzalez
- Javier Vazquez
- Milton Bradley
I'm sure there are more that are out there. For example, Joe Mauer is going to be a 2010 FA. Here's my question and I hope we get some good discussion on this. If you could trade for one of these players, who would it be, who would you give up from our organization, and why? Please let's keep this to trades, not free agents. Thanks.

Josh Johnson for me
I believe this player has the opportunity to become a future solid #2 behind our ace, Zack Grienke. It may be a tough trade; then I think about it and realize we got Jacobs for Nunez so the Marlins owe us one.
I’d offer Mark Teahan, Carlos Rosa, and one of our mid-range pitching prospects. Maybe a Kila or a highly-touted “troubled” formerly suspended IF named Jason Taylor if they we don’t match up on pitching. I need to do some more research on the Marlins needs, but I’m going to guess we don’t have much they would want.

Marlins aren't dumb enough to fall for that
remember how past trades with the Marlins have gone for Dayton?

It would take a serious haul to get Josh Johnson...
and my guess is that those names are definitely not what they are looking for

No way
We should be trading away our major league talent (the bits we have) for minor league talent. Not trading away prospects for anyone.
This team isn’t competing next year. It makes no sense to deplete the group of players who will be here when we do (if we do) in 2 or 3 years.
So in answer to your question, I wouldn’t trade for any Major League player who doesn’t have 4 or 5 years of control left.

But that's the cruz of it, isn't it?
Moore simply refuses to believe a complete rebuild is in order (or Glass has “instructed” him to not believe in it); therefore, most if not all of his moves since he got here have been attempts at trying to push the win total up by 1 or 2 at a time, rather than moves designed to emerge with a better team in the long term. (I’m talking about his trades – obviously they are trying to address the long-term by increasing their spending on the draft and in international signings).
I suppose if he was a terrific GM, it might be possible to do both at once – but I think it would be infinitely easier (and hence more achievable) to announce to the fanbase that we aren’t going to be competitive until the farm system is completely rebuilt, and that he believes in drafting high schoolers in general, and therefore the farm system won’t be rebuilt until around 2013 or so, so fans need to be patient and wait until then before judging the new organizational direction.
I am CONVINCED that Glass would not allow such a bold, honest statement to go on the record, even if it were the truth.
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

"crux of it"
While Juan Cruz has sucked this year, I didn’t mean to rewrite the English language in his (dis) honer!

can't we find anyone older than these guys?
I mean, experience counts.

I love all these players
And unfortunately we have nothing to offer that will net us any of these players.

Rumors of the Brewers blowing their team up
Who could Soria haul out of that organization?
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

if they're blowing their team up, its unlikely theyd find use for a closer

I've heard Hardy and Fielder may be available
But I don’t think they’re going to “blow the team up”. They still have enough young talent that they could replace those guys without missing too much of a beat.

Doug Melvin
answers questions sometimes with the answer that anybody is available. Its sort of a non-answer given that any team would trade any player if the price is right. I’ll bet that Prince plus Braun might get Zach or insert whatever impossible trade.
But Hardy is almost certainly gone as Escobar is up. The Fielder thing is a growth of a comment in the news by the owner that his trade value is at its highest right now.

Any meat to this
other than the comment in the paper about Fielder’s trade value?
My impression of Attanasio is that they want the team to be consistently competitive. He put more money into the team and now attendance and sponsorships are both up. Blowing up the team would screw all that.
Hoffman has expressed his desire to come back – he’s done well and is a fan favorite. Melvin also likes to give unexpected guys a shot there. Villaneuva was the guy talked about most as closer before Hoffman signed. Turnbow was closer a while back.
Some team might get real bargains out of the AAA team as there are some nice performers who are going to be FAs. They aren’t the shiny, talked about prospects but they hit and field the ball pretty well: Heether, Iribarren, Bour… Bourgeious?
