Former Royals catcher Sal Fasano hopes for callup to pay for medical bills
It would be a classy move if the Royals would trade for him and bring him up. Besides, what team doesn't need four catchers?

And yet, the medical bills of a child with a congenital heart defect can burn through that money in short order. $12K won’t pay for an average emergency room visit.

Honestly
This would be the kind of thing that would keep me proud of my baseball team.
Pecota, watch over us.
Wow
That is a side of the glamour of professional athletics you don’t see often. You’d think a guy like Sal, even playing @ the veterans minimum for the better part of a decade would be pretty well off
BOOM! ROASTED!
you'd think he could at least afford a financial advisor

I guess I really don't get why he turned down COBRA
Yea, $20,000 is a lot of money, but we’re talking about medical bills for your kid who has a chronic disease here.

That does seem rather silly, but if you think you're gonna be in MLB and if the money's not refundable, I could see it at least
He’d better work the phones and look for an MLB job somewhere as a coach. I would think the MLB insurer would have a huge problem with him being called up and put on the plan when they know that’s the only reason he was called up. I wonder if they would have any recourse.
Also,
“People don’t always understand the reality of a situation,” Fasano says. “Yes, I made [decent money] last year. But I was taxed at 46 percent. To take a $20,000 chunk out of that is huge. We couldn’t afford it”
He definitely needs a financial advisor/tax advisor. There’s no way he should be paying 46% in taxes, I don’t care how much money he made.
Kietzman mentioned this on 810
He also said he contacted the Royals. They said they have a crunch on their 40 man roster but were going to forward the story on to all 29 other MLB teams to see if anyone would pick him up.
I think this is worth the tiny chance that we could lose Devon Lowery.

Yeah, the political issues aside, well, this is different
we’re not talking about a guy with no chance ot get health insurance.
I do hope that a team picks him up, though

He should come to Canada, and just the death panel decide what to do…
Sorry. In seriousness, this is really sad. I hope someone picks him up, or the MLBPA help him or something. I have a child who had numerous surgeries as a toddler, and it worrying and scary enough as it is. To have to worry about money on top of that (which we didn’t thankfully) must make it that much worse.
it's an unfortunate story...
but nobody is to blame but Fasano. It’s absolutely irresponisble that they didnt pay the 20k without a MLB guarantee to ensure the health of their child. He doesnt have 20k sitting around? After a long MLB career?

I'm wondering how good their plan is
Even if his health care plan picks up say 90% of the costs, that’s $100,000 that the Fasanos have to put up as a co-pay. Plus he’s taxed at 46% (which is misleading – that’s what his marginal tax rate is, his entire salary is not taxed at 46%, just the part that is in the upper bracket) I dunno, I still think it was unnecessarily risky to pass up $20,000 for COBRA, but I think some people have a hard time downsizing their lifestyle to pay for necessary costs. Sheesh, if my kid has expensive medical bills, I’d sell the house, move into something smaller, sell the car, find a way to pay the $20,000.

35% is the top marginal bracket for income tax, which means he made at least 357,500
unless he is including SS and Medicare, I don’t see how he gets that figure. And if he’s in the top bracket, he should have been able to afford $20,000.
i think a bigger issue would be
what type of house and cars does he own?
