Yet Another Problem at the K? Aramark Concessions Treating Employees Poorly?
Knowing that we have some vendors who post here regularly, I thought I would pass this along.
Aramark, who provides the concessions at a number of Major League ballparks, including Kauffman Stadium, is coming under fire from labor groups.
At baseball stadiums and other job sites across North America, Aramark is violating the law and disregarding workers' rights. For example, food service employees at Fenway Park in Boston won a $1.5 million dollar settlement of a class action lawsuit this July that accused Aramark of pocketing their tips and service charges. Elsewhere, Aramark is unlawfully withholding workers' union dues at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Citizen's Bank Park in Philadelphia, PNC Park in Pittsburgh, and Coors Field in Colorado.

I refuse to believe that
David Glass would associate himself with anti-union companies.

As a member of Beyond the Boxscore, I got the same letter. Some other classics from it.
"We don’t know that Aramark causes bad luck," said Callaci. "But we do think that Aramark workers are unlucky to have an employer that is so cavalier about violating workers’ rights."
“I am a loyal fan of the Rockies," said Michael Johnson, who is a food service worker at Coors Field in Colorado and a Workers United member. "I sure hope the bad luck we’ve had with Aramark keeping our dues and not recognizing our officers and staff doesn’t rub off. I want the Rockies to make it to the playoffs again AND I want to be able to see my union rep in the building again.”
“In a comparison between teams with home stadiums that use Aramark and teams with home stadiums that do not, Workers United found that non-Aramark teams’ average luck is .40 and Aramark teams’ average luck is -1.93.
The teams whose ballparks use Aramark are: the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Houston Astros, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, and Minnesota Twins."

Ok, I don't get the luck thing
What do they mean by that?
I know the workers at the stadium don't seem real happy on gamedays,
but I’m not sure if that hasn’t anything to do with Aramark.
(mainly the concession workers, the vendors are normally more upbeat)
He can get 4, NOT 5.
No major problems for vendors at the K, so far
I’m speaking for the vendors that work the aisles, not necessarily for the stand workers. I have seen in an ESPN article on page 2 that vendors make a few % points less in Boston than we do here – so they are actually treating us nicer on this first contract, which expires after 2011 season. I assume they can do that to the Boston vendors because they always have a full house and presumably do better than us because of that. (FYI – stand workers are paid hourly, somewhere in the area of $9 or $10 per hour range. All vendors work on straight commission, subject to a minimum of $41.72(4.5 hrs) minimum per game. Beer vendors get paid by the bottle sold, I believe it is in the 80 something cents per bottle. Food vendors get between 18 and 20.5% (goes up as your total sales for the year accumulate), but that is based on net sales; i.e., I sell a bag of nuts for $4.50, but you gotta divide by 1.09725 to subtract out the inherent sales tax and find the “real” selling price. Bottom line – sell a bag of nuts, get about 80 something cents. Vendors pay for each load as we get them; hence we keep any tips we receive automatically. Naturally, I report all of those on my taxes, in case we have any IRS agents reading this! : )
I have noticed the payroll department needs improvement. They make numerous errors on paychecks – but they do always correct them. Just a hassle to deal with. One major error they STILL have not corrected – they have yet to withhold the KC earnings tax (KC municipality has a 1% earnings tax on all wages earned within the city limits). We have been pointing it out to our supervisors all year – but this is a big company, so it may be that payroll could be processed anywhere in the country for all I know, so this hasn’t got changed. I’m sorta shocked that the city hasn’t figured this out yet. We want them to get it figured out, because the LAST thing we wanted was for us to get to the end of the season and have what would normally be a weekly pittance withheld turn into a $50 or $60 whopper to make up for their error.
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
