Alex Gordon's Chip
Maybe he's just going to sulk away the rest of his career, but Alex Gordon is primed for something in 2010.

Why Gordon needs to rake
At this point, even though he’s now under control through 2013, I don’t think there’s any way Gordon is going to be a Royal one day longer than he has to, at least as long as the current brain trust (boy, I’m using that loosely) is in charge. But there’s next to no value in Gordon right now; trading him solely based on his “potential” is selling too low, as whatever we’d get back would simply not be worth even the possibility of success from Gordon.
I do believe, however, that the reason for wanting Gordon to emerge now are different. Should Gordon reestablish next year and get people excited about his future again, I think the Royals should start looking for buyers. Gordon with the potential of playing up to his ceiling would seemingly merit at least three very good prospects (a top 5, a top 10, and a serviceable arm) if not more. Come next offseason or 2011 deadline, a productive Gordon’s a very attractive acquisition due to the now one more year of team control.
There’s little reason to believe the bridge is not burnt to the ground between the Royals and Gordon, so thinking about a good Gordon long term should stop. But, should Gordon (finally) emerge, getting that extra year of control winds up being a pretty shrewd move. If Gordon never emerges, then it really didn’t matter anyhow.

I see your point
but don’t you think a productive Gordon would begin to mend the hurt egos on both sides? Afterall, it was a lack of production (if you can call a 110 OPS+ that) and injury that started all the bad feelings anyways.

I strongly disagree
I thought Gordon was primed to break out this year, and an injury completely stole this season from him. People think he’s standing on the edge of being a huge bust, but why? It’s not like he played the full year and stunk it up. He’s only had 110 PAs this season, and around 20 of them in April are tainted with his hip injury he was playing through. I will bet Gordon rebounds next year big time.

I don't think that's disagreement
I also think he’s got the potential to hit big next year.
My point is that the organization jerking him around means that he’ll want out of KC as soon as possible. If his 4th season is what we hoped his 3rd should have been, his value on the market will take huge swing upward. Since I no longer believe he’s gonna stay in KC when he comes available for free agency, his now extra year of control makes him that much more value, and that’s value that a team like KC, who is still gonna have a bunch of holes to fill and still few resources to fill them, needs to exploit. Better to move someone you now have reason to believe won’t stay instead than to move Greinke or Soria (who have demonstrated a willingness to stay in KC longer term) or Butler (who might be open to such an offer now). As those are the only current Royals with any possible impact value on the market, the strained relationship with Gordon has got to make a breakout-season-Gordon the top trading chip the Royals would have that would also make sense to move.

Yeah....
I strongly disagreed with one statement you made and then I went off on a tangent…. I probably should have read what I wrote. I disagree that we can get full value for Gordon if he rebounds next year. More than likely he’ll play out the string with us, and we’ll get compensation picks if that happens. If he is traded, it will be another Yuniesky-style fiasco with Moore pulling the trigger. More than likely, if we are to get full value for him, it will be a deadline deal in 2012 or ’13 after he puts up 2.5-3.5 good to great seasons.

Baseball is a "what have you done for me lately and NOW" game
Gordon needs to pull a Larry Johnson. Alex, you wear diapers! Let’s go out and rush for 2K yards or better yet, hit .333 and 33 HRs with 133 RBI.

I like those numbers
but even .280/.400/.480 line would be sweet… think of Pat Burrell with a little more batting average and a little less walks. Wouldn’t that be great?

or Corie Koskie from a few years back?
Usually around .300/.400/.470… I’d take it and call the whole thing a success.

That's right! Anyone who lets a minor hip injury keep them out for weeks is obviously a baby.
I’m glad Dr. Nick finally has the stones to post here.

The truth according to Trey...
Interestingly I listened to Hillman on 610 tonite when he was asked about AG being back. His comments, “It’s great to see Alex back. He made the most of his time in Omaha and his work ethic and attitude were off the charts. I caught wind of something that was written (Pos) that said his body language was bad so I asked Mike Jirschele and he told me nothing could be further from the truth. A message to Royals fans, don’t believe everything you read.”
