Around SBN: Odds On Peyton Manning's Next Home Includes Three Teams

Previously, the Royals brought up pitchers Victor Marte, Carlos Rosa and Dusty Hughes from Omaha. Hillman said the DiNardo and Gordon promotions signal the end of September callups. That means that Omaha first baseman Kila Ka'aihue (.252, 17 homers, 57 RBIs) will not get a look this year, as he did in 2008.

bummers...

I bet we’ll trade Ka’aihue soon… he’s not getting any sort of chance here. Sucks to be him… and sucks to be Royals fans.

Sigh

I’d love to hear Moore’s explanation for not recalling him. What would be the downside? It’s obvious they’ve written him off as a real prospect.

The front office and Royals.com is stuck in the '70's

I’m sure they looked at the line and saw that he only hit .252 with 17 hr’s and 57 RBI’s. They think he completely sucks.

I’m very pissed if they are done making roster additions. They have, what, a 3 man bench? The Royals are going to have even more problems signing AAAA replacement-level talent next year. If Cory Aldridge can’t get a call-up after a very good season and they won’t call up KIla who is already on the 40-man, why would anybody believe they had a shot in hell of getting called up? If not for the injuries to the pitchers would Rosa, Hughes, and Marte got called up? Is Glass refusing to add any more payroll, even the minor amounts to a few more call-ups?

Those numbers looks suspiciously like Jacobs's numbers.

Why would we want that when we already have it? What’s that? It’s $3M cheaper? Oh…

Looks like Kila is getting the Huber treatment

I actually think this makes a bit of sense if they plan to put Ka'aihue on the team next year

Not wasting an option, and not giving him any extra time this year, means he wouldn’t qualify for the Super 2 provision in arbitration, as 2 years and 2 months would probably qualify right? So Kila’s down, but he’s not out, as he can be a cheap DH option for the next 3 years then.

But that would be the smart move. Does this front office make any of those?

by AxDxMx on Sep 8, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

No

The Royals already used the option when they sent him down in spring training — once he was in the minors for 20 days, the option is used and the team can recall (and demote) him as many times as they want.

Nor would a September callup affect his chances of becoming a Super 2. The cutoff for Super 2 eligibility is 2 years plus somewhere between 125 and 140 days (roughly an extra 4 1/2 months). Even with another 25 days in service time this September, he would still be half a season short of qualifying as a Super 2 after the 2011 season.

Does a 40 man roster callup count as an option?

it probably doesn't

It does when you get sent down, so my brain told me it worked that way when you get called up without thinking about it too hard. So cross off the first thing I said above, the rest still applies.

Not a callup but a demotion

Once a player is put on the 40-man roster, an option is used when in any one season he is demoted to the minors (for at least 20 days). Kila was added to the 40-man last offseason, so his first option was used in April 2009 when he was sent to the minors at the end of spring training (and stayed there for 20 days).

Kila still has two more options, but he is already 25, so they do not have much value.

Well

Clearly the Kila boat has sailed in KC. Not aggressive enough.

I look forward to him turning up in Oakland in the middle of next year.

I am disappointed about this one....

Give the guy a chance in the bigs. Add what we know from last year to this.

I'm really about done with this club

Don’t worry, I’m sure I’ll be back next April. I’m deluded.

All it would really take at this point for me is cockblocking Billy at 1B

with Teahen or Gordon. Then they trade Billy because of the massive surplus of 1B guys. If that happens I will quit, no regrets.
