One can make sense of the move if this is your planned lineup on Opening Day:
1. SS Pods-Left field
2. Getz-second base
4. Fields-Right field
5. Gordon-first base
6. Collaspo-third base
7. Mike A-SS
8. Mitch M-CF
On the bench: one of the Anderson boys (this assumes we will acquire another soon), Blumin' Onion the Super Sub, Pena, Betancourt and whoever we get for DDJ.
Traded and Dumped as a "sunk cost": DDJ and Guillen, aka "LJ".
Rationale 1: LJ's gotta go, DeJesus has value, and we can unload the SSPods after 1 year if he sucks, or trade him away to somebody who needs him in July, should he be performing at his 09 level.
Rationale 2: Mitch gets a year to sink or swim, Anderson kind of does too, Pena gets mentored like nobody's business, and we find out if Mike A is ready for prime time, or a flash in the pan with a suspicious "forearm" injury.
Fallback Rationale: this lineup, which is built on the notion that our pitching is in pretty good shape, may perhaps (1) catch lightning in a bottle in 2010 (i.e., 75 wins), and/or (2) creates a nucleus of good youngsters at every position but catcher for a run in 2011, when a corner outfielder can be bought with the Guillen and/or Meche money.
Mark it in ink and let the abuse begin!
