The USSM/LL event was just awesome!
In passing, I commented to Matthew Caruth that I couldn’t begin to imagine Dayton Moore ever attending a Royals Review sponsored question and answer session.
++++++++
I was also talking after the event with another guy, who is a long-time Mariners observer about differences between Bavasi and Zduriencik. Thsi guy also has some contacts in the Mariners front office.
We agreed that Bavasi was very linear in his approach to building a roster. Bavasi would see a need – say for a DH or a starting pitcher – would identify three or four options, rank them, and then start determining what it would take to land them. But once he set a course he followed it, and it often led to him “paying whatever it takes” to get it done. That led to him giving four years to Jarrod Washburn, four years to Richie Sexson, four years to Carlos Silva, three years to Miguel Batista, oodles of talent for Erik Bedard, etc.
Only rarely did Bavasi decide the price was too great; most notably (and thankfully) when he decided he couldn’t go seven years and over $100 million on Barry Zito.
Zduriencik seems to operate differently. . Bavasi was very straightforward in identifying options, doing it the old-fashioned way. Zduriencik develops a wider variety of options, and so far appears to place much less value on “veteran” experience. He doesn’t dismiss it entirely, but he doesn’t fall in love with it. When things don’t proceed the way Zduriencik wishes, he doesn’t just bulldog ahead either; he’s apt to take a step back, put his head together with his staff and see if there isn’t another way they can accomplish what they want to do.
++++++
Moore, of course, seems to me to operate very similarly to Bavasi.

And it was cool to hear Tony Blengino talking a bit about his work ...
… and to actually hear how the Front Office team blends together the different perspectives.
Tony also has a standing feature on ESPN Seattle Hot Stove League that is the “stat of the week”, in which he takes one of the “new-fangled” stats and tries to deconstruct it for the audience. And now the beat writers and broadcasters are actually referencing concepts such as Zone Rating and FIP in their coverage of the team.

Completely jealous.
Our FO just makes fun of Brian Bannister. You’d think they’d take a page from his playbook, especially after he improved so much last year from 2008.
The FO
would improve greatly if they sat down to talk with Banny about these magical hoobidty-joos STAT thingama- jigs.
That won’t happen though.

Right, but he's testing ideas
Obviously his ‘08 ideas weren’t good, and so he changed what he was doing and improved in ’09.
Holy Mother of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait, legally speaking, I guess he didn’t lie during the congregational hearing if he kept saying he didn’t want to talk about the past but…………./shakes head

No one believed he hadn't done it
So why not just admit it? Though his HOF chances likely rested on seeing McGwire blubber and cry about using.
the fact that costas will interview him tonight
pretty much means i won’t bewatching MLBN for the next week
The questions is
does McGwire tear up immediately after the first steroids question, or have his advisers told him to hold back until he talks about letting his son down?
I want to know, who is to blame?
Will he blame the owners? Peer pressure? Society? MTV? Terrorists? Illegal immigrants? WHO WILL BE THE SCAPEGOAT?
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Probably societal pressures to be the best or some nonsense like that
Can’t really blame the players from back then, MLB wasn’t tough on it, so there was no incentive not to, but a huge incentive to be better = more money.
But yeah consider my childhood just put more players on notice, it’s not happy.

I'm On 'Roids
Right now. It’s just Methylprednisolone, a short course for the purpose of calming an unexplained inflammation in my right shoulder. Being old is hard.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
I did notice your home run total had spiked considerably

I was on the similar stuff for a bit.
Shit rocked.
Needed 2 hours of sleep a night. All kinds of energy. Was great for helping deal with a new born.
Getting off sucked.

Mine Is Just
A 6 day course of decreasing doses. It did knock out the inflammation in one day, though; I hope it’s over with. I couldn’t answer the phone right handed, much less swim, which has been a great exercise for me.

They gave me corticosteroids once
for a noncontagious skin condition. I was working out pretty hard at the time, hitting the pool for sixty lengths a day, not much for a good swimmer but not bad for me. I think the course ran for three months, and I noted and felt muscle growth in my triceps and deltoids. Didn’t notice the chicks paying any more attention to me, though.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
Bummer
Hate how the McGwire story blew the Matt Herges signing off the front page….
Murphy was an optimist.

Pirates sign C Luke Carlin
Pirates sign 28 year old catcher Luke Carlin to a minor league deal. Carlin has great OBA numbers in the minors and is supposed to be a tremendous defender. In other words, he’s like Jason Kendall, except $3 million cheaper, and seven years younger.

I have to admit
Channel 41 showed clips of Alex Gordon and others working out at Mac and Seitz and I couldn’t help but get a little excited. I love baseball.

I can't wait for Alex to have a monster season this year
Then bolt for free agency in 2013 (or whenever) while flipping the Royals the bird with both hands
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs.

MLBTraderumors:
On the Royals hot stove show Thursday night, GM Dayton Moore said they’re close to signing one of the five best international free agents “within the next month or so.” Landon Adams of Royal Revival has the full quote and speculation on the player. In an email, ESPN’s Keith Law guessed that it could be Wagner Mateo or Cuban pitchers Deinys Suarez or Yuniesky Maya (profiled here by ESPN’s Jorge Arangure Jr.)
