Fantasy Season 2010
Hey everyone!
I’m supermarc from over at Athletics Nation and I was hoping you all could help with the upcoming fantasy season. Having been an SB nation member for awhile, I know that this is the place to find the most knowledgeable Royals fans on the net. With that in mind, I thought what better way to prepare for the upcoming fantasy season, than to get insider info from the fans who know the most. If you could simply respond to the following, it would be greatly appreciated.
Team’s top 5 fantasy players overall:
Top 4 hitters:
Top 3 SP:
Top 2 RP:
2 Sleeper/Breakout Picks:
2 Players to Avoid:
Thank you so much for your help, and remember, if you ever need to know anything about the A’s, we’re always welcoming of outsiders at AN.

Top 4 hitters:
Yuniesky Betancourt — SS is tough to fill, and Yuni is due for some serious positive regression
Jason Kendall — how many catchers will net you four steals?
Jose Guillen — two words: contract year
Brian Anderson — former Red Sox, one of the smart teams, so he must be good
Top 3 SP:
Kyle Davies — don’t worry about the bad control, he’s only 26
Luke Hochevar — last year, he was a victim of the Royals defense, which has totally been fixed
Jorge Campillo — the Mexican version of the right-handed version of Jamie Moyer
Top 2 RP:
Kyle Farnsworth — Ks, Ks, and more Ks
Juan Cruz — only needed a year to readjust to the AL
2 Sleeper/Breakout Picks:
Jarrod Dyson — will explode
Paulo Orlando (keeper league only) — if you want the name of a prospect that will turn heads at your draft, it is spelled P-a-u-l-o O-r-l-a-n-d-o
2 Players to Avoid:
Zach Greinke — he will not be as good as last year, so why bother
Billy Butler — he’s never had a 100 RBI season

Is it okay for the post of the year to be in the first week of January and be a comment?

I don't see a problem considering the win level of the above comment

This = AMAZING.
I laughed out loud in my classroom… my students all turned around to look at me… thus I ruined one of the only quiet moments in my room the entire day… but that is fine…

well it's snowing on me.
Counting the minutes until 3, then I’m guessing I’ve got a 4 day weekend ahead.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
I think we just canceled for tomorrow.
This is a great thing… that and the zero below type temps…

I'm assuming
You actually want some help and I’m desperately hoping you realize the above (which is totally awesome, BTW) is not the most sincere list you can come across (if you didn’t, I anticipate you will not do well this coming year). Your numerical requests are also hard to fill—I don’t know that we have four “best” hitters. I’ll also assume that, like most fantasy leagues, you all use a lot of traditional counting stats, and thus want players who look good with those stats:
Hitters:
1) Billy Butler, 1B: I think he’ll be the most underrated 1b in fanstasy leagues this year. He’s going to get you a really good average with good slugging %, a ton of doubles, and 20+ HR. Plus, if its a keeper league, he’s just turning 24 in April. Use your earlier picks for better pitching or premium position guys like Mauer and wait for Butler in later rounds.
2) Alberto Callaspo, 2B/3B/??: strong average, found some power last year, very few strikeouts. Warning: right now, he’s likely a man without a position, and may not start everyday. The manager says he’ll get in the lineup everyday at 2B (current position), 3B, OF, DH, but I don’t trust the organization enough.
3) David DeJesus, LF: there are OF with gaudier stats, but DDJ will give you a solid all around non-power performance: good average, not a lot of HR, a bunch of runs.
4) ummmm…..I’ll take Alex Gordon, 3B: last year was lost to injury, but his second half of 2008 showed definite progress. If he’s healthy and the Royals just let him be, he’s got the potential to pay off with good power stats.
Starting Pitchers
1) Zack Greinke: I’ll assume you need no info. Get him in the first round if you can.
2) Gil Meche: here by essentially default, if he’s healthy, he should couple an ERA under four with solid strikeout numbers.
3) Luke Hochevar: for the fantasy world, the chance for outstanding beats regular solid play. Brian Bannister is the third best SP on the staff, but he won’t get gaudy counting stats. Hochevar had three starts last year which were among the best pitched games in baseball last year (14 Ks in one of them). He also can blow up huge (6.00+ ERA last year). The infield defense will let him down, and he’s a sinkerballer, so he’ll give up some runs. But, if he lives up to even some of the potential he occasionally showed last year, he might be a sleeper worth taking a chance on, especially if you can bury him on the bench to see how he looks early on.
RP
1) Joakim Soria: good for at least 30 saves, as he’s done the last three years. Some arm trouble last year, but I’m optimistic there’s no real underlying problem.
2) Robinson Tejeda: if walks don’t count against you, Tejeda has plenty of strikeout potential. Also had some really good starts last year and might wind up being a starter.
Sleepers/Breakout: Hochevar and Tejeda might belong here instead. Until a few weeks ago, C Brayan Pena showed a good bat last year and might have had a chance to split time at C, but the Jason Kendall acquisition guarantees Pena won’t get even 2 starts a week. I don’t think anybody else on the roster qualifies, and I don’t anticipate any impact rookies.
Avoid: Anybody else with “KC” next to their name. Seriously, the rest of the roster is brutal.

Couple of others for to watch
1. Davies - see if he moved to pen and his roll - same with Luke H- pick up late and put in DL. Low risk, high reward pick
2. Aviles -
Jeff Zimmerman - Protecting the world from RBI's and Wins from my mom's guest house.

I don't think he's going to be a sleeper
or he’s going to be the “sleeper” everyone knows about

My .02
Team’s top 5 fantasy players overall:
1. Zack Greinke – Top 3 pitcher, not many wins though :(
2. Joakim Soria – Consistant closer. He has to be in a closing situation, which isnt always a given on the Royals
3. Billy Butler – Will the power come this year? If so, put him above Soria
4. Alberto Callaspo – Hopefully, he can maintain or build on last year. Useful hitter that is eligable for several positions. That is, if he is still a Royal.
5. Alex Gordon – Look for a bounce back year after being injured last year. Probably wont be drafted very early, so if you want to take a chance on a 3b with upside…
Top 4 hitters:
1. Billy Butler
2. Alberto Callaspo
3. Alex Gordon
4. Joe Guilen – If you are willing to punt some categories, he will produce RBIs and his avg wont kill you. It’s sad that I think he really is the 4th best fantasy option here.
4b. David Dejesus – Will have a good avg and produce some runs, but not much power. Not very useful in fantasy baseball
Top 3 SP:
1. Zack Greinke
2. Gil Meche – If he can stay away from injuries, he is a viable option for fantasy. Has a good K rate
3. Brian Bannister – Won’t get you Ks, but could have a good ERA and WHIP. A good pitcher to pickup if you play matchups
Top 2 RP:
1. Joakim Soria
2. Juan Cruz – I have not given up on him. Has a good K rate for a reliever, but had a down year. If your league counts “holds” then maybe…but he wasnt too good at those last year either.
2 Sleeper/Breakout Picks:
1. Luke Hochevar – Has some amazing games and some horrible games. If you want a pitcher that you can ride a few games on a hot streak, look for LUUUKE
2. Robinson Tejada – Showed some promise at the end of last year. If he can continue this to 2010, he could be a player in deeper leagues
2b. Alex Gordon – Has the potential to fall in drafts further than he should
2 Players to Avoid:
1. Jose Guillen – He is our 4th best fantasy hitter, but you can do better. Take onl;y if you need some RBIs.
2. Zack Greinke – Will probably be drafted too early in your league, which is why I have him here. Do NOT spend a first round pick (or 2nd or 3rd in my opinion, but thats just my strategy) on a pitcher
Hope that helps
