If You Pass

For a first down it is the best option.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Jan 7, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

I guess it would depend on how many more yards to go for the first down

would be leveraged into that decision

but I suppose this is also a stat that GMDM does not buy into

by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on Jan 7, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

That’s not a question, that’s an opinion.

Say you complete 60% of your passes, and it is 3rd and less than 5. A complete pass likely means a 1st down and another 2+ minutes off the clock, but just for argument, let’s say 15% of your completed passes will not be enough for the first.

Let’s say at 3rd and 5, you run for 5 yards or more roughly 25% of the time.

.45 × 2 mins + .15 × 40 secs + .4 × 0 mins = 60 seconds

.25 × 2 mins + .75 × 40 secs = 60 seconds

It really depends on the situation and your probabilities, but passing for the first on 3rd down to run out the clock may be the best option unless you are looking at 3rd and 10 or worse.

The obvious thing people get hung up on is the clock stoppage on an incomplete pass, but the higher reward play, comes with a higher level of risk. Both positions can be defended, and if they sent this guy home for this question, he should get another shot, though i’m guessing this is a Photoshop job.

by AxDxMx on Jan 7, 2010 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

yes it's a photoshop

I think Woody Hayes said this after being asked why Ohio State had only thrown the ball 5 times in a game (they won); “There are three things that can happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad.”

Classic Big Ten stuff right there.

How is that not photoshopped with Les Miles in there?

Although I guess he has more problems with stopping the clock than running it out.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 7, 2010 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

he did? What an asshole

seriously, no one gives a fuck what Ryan thinks. Joe Posnanski is one of about 5 sports journalists I respect, maybe the only one I admire, and no one gives a shit about Ryan , except Milton Bradly. And I hope Seattle’s players don’t restrain him as much as TEX’s did

He got after Posnanski several times late in the year

(usually after Joe would have an especially negative column in the Star.) I was shocked by it, but he definitely gave the impression that while Joe might be a great writer, he just didn’t understand the game as well as someone like Trey or Dayton.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 7, 2010 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

to be fair

That's how Ryan was going after Joe.

“Joe’s a great guy, but he just misunderstands certain things.” Not in an unfriendly way, just implied Posnanski didn’t really understand the inner, secret game of baseball and relied on stats too much. A very condescending tone.

I'm pretty sure it was mostly right after

the trade for Yuni. Joe had a couple of blog columns that in his “nice guy” way really reamed Dayton about his claims of Yuni’s good D and Ryan seemed almost reciting some of DMGM’s talking points about how scouts see things us mere mortals don’t.
