Royals Close to Signing a Speedy Outfielder According to Dayton Moore
In Moore's just completed interview with 610 AM, the GM said that the Royals are very close to signing a "speed type player to add to our outfield". He didn't give a name, and said it hadn't happened yet. However, he did volunteer the information on his own, unprompted.
I've got Scotty Pods as my prediction, what do you foresee?
The rest of the interview was about what you would expect (some weird stuff from Ryan, praise for Getz, some ambivalent comments on Gordon, Kendall is awesome) and if you missed it, check out our thread discussing it. You guys were in mid-season form.
You can also listen to the archived audio here.

"Signing" or "acquiring"
If “signing,” Pods it is. If “acquiring,” the old Willy Taveras joke is about to be no longer funny.
I wait, cowering in fear,
hoping that our worst predictions won’t come true, when I know it’s all in vain.

Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot...buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath & Beyond, I don't know...I don't know if we'll have enough time.

So why not bring Rickey back?

my inner DM tells me that this is who he signed.
I don't know why I let myself hope for Brett Gardner or even Rajai Davis
I guess we need Podsednik to help mentor our CF prospects
If he pulls one these out his butt
He will have totally redeemed himself, and maybe he’s starting to get it. But I won’t hold my breath.

Can't believe no one has mentioned this
But aren’ t the odds quite strong that “Josh Fields Played QB for Oklahoma State” will surprise “Ron Mahay was an OF prospect in Boston” for Unbelievably Annoying Announcer Comment Repeated Ad Nauseum by, I dunno, May 2?

Based on the interview
It’s gotta be Pods. He didn’t say “gritty” (Winn), “upside” (Ankiel), or “I admit the dudes at Royals Review know more than me” (Church). It’s Podsednik. Get to hatin’ it.
believe me, it would be boring as hell without the live commentary from the crew here
although you gotta fast forward to the Josh Fields interview…

He clearly says they are close to “signing” a speedy outfielder.

As if the weather here isn't enough to cause winter depression,
Dayton Moore has to give us the worst offseason ever. Hey, Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel are going to be great for the Chiefs. When does the next NFL season start again?
Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.
Of course they are, we've never seen a "hot" can't miss GM hired and fail.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
I don't know if its better
to have heard Moore said that this was close, and then being depressed until it actually goes through, or having it hit us out of nowhere.

And Pods will then be the leadoff batter ...
… because in the leadoff spot speed is more important than on-base percentage. And Podsednik is a proven and recognized leadoff hitter.
Of course we can then move through the rest of the lineup similarly:
In the #2 spot being able to sacrifice, move the runner along, avoid striking out, and provide added speed on the bases is more important than OBP.
And in the #3, #4, #5 and #6 spots power is more important than OBP because those guys are the run producers.
And the #7, #8, and #9 spots are guys who are on the team for their defense, not their bat, so OBP in those spots is nice, but certainly not necessary
See, when you build a lineup with guys in the proper roles you don’t really need OBP.
OBP is just a crutch for GMs who don’t know how to find the right players to fit into the proper roles.
that last parrt is so on the mark, it's scary
and depressing
Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot...buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath & Beyond, I don't know...I don't know if we'll have enough time.

Maybe he'll figure it out
when for the 52nd year in a row, Runs Scored goes down.
Greinke could throw a perfect game every time out for 162 starts and still not get 20 wins. Go Royals!
I just don't get this OBP thing.
I really don’t. But I don’t have time to educate.

If we’re lucky. Lot’s of teams have been wanting to sign him so we’ll definitely have to open up the wallet.

With so many pretty good, cheap OFers on the FA market
…how does Dayton Moore keep acquiring the worst of them? Let’s hope it really isn’t Podsednik. But this sour feeling in my gut tells me that it is.

This organization is rotten
from the top all throughout. It’s gotten to the point where Moore is clearly not the only problem (though he does deserve all of the blame). He can’t possibly be getting good advice from those around him with these kinds of signings.
I will slit my wrists if the next GM has a ‘scouting’ background.
Correction.

Is Dayton Moore the Al Davis of baseball?
What is it with his single minded obsession with:
1. speedy (no hit, no walk) players
2. gritty (no talent) players
3. having a left hander in the rotation (even if he sucks)
OK, is that a three minded obsession?

Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
maybe this has been brought up before,
but the references to GMDM as “fearless leader” in the radio show thread lead me to an epiphany: GMDM has been reminding me of someone, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on whom until just now.
