Forgive me

I thought this was one of those moments like when some liberal said, after Nixon won in his 1972 landslide that he didn’t know anyone who had voted for him.

Basically, you’re saying that people who regret having voted for Bush deny after the fact that they did so? Can’t say I’ve experienced such, but I guess it’s all about the circles one moves in.

Lame

Makes sense from a business perspective for the team to change their name. Perhaps they should have done a little more market research into finding a good name.

For the record,

my comment was a direct reply to yours, if that makes any difference. I was just musing on stuff that people keep saying elsewhere.

Sure, go ahead and give a shit. That’s obviously your right. I just don’t understand the people out there who are like, “I’m never setting foot in that ballpark because I don’t like the team name!” Really?

REALLY?!

I like baseball. I will keep liking baseball. I will like watching the best prospects the Omaha area has ever seen, even if I wouldn’t have personally named the team the Chasers. To me, it’s not really worth missing out on baseball for. I dunno. Maybe I’m just mellowing too much in my old age.

WTF, self?

by minda33 on Nov 16, 2010 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

Ya, I never said the name would stop me from going to the game

And obviously it would not stop you. But it might stop someone else who thinks the team is an independent league team with silly graphics and team name.

The people the team needs to worry about louring to the stadium are quite obviously not you and me. And on top of just attendance, merchandise sales is a HUGE portion of redesigns. And I think there is no way this redesign sells more merch than if they went to a traditional O-Royals, script jerseys, ditch the red, and add a powder blue omaha jersey for the road. (not to mention the negative impact on the bottom line of actually paying a marketing group for their “work”!)

Because if you have a classic design, the gear can be worn outside of the stadium to positively represent yourself and possibly your city/team allegiance. And therefore, since the merch can fulfill more than just a shirt to wear to the game, (and potential customers can see themselves wearing it more often) people become more likely to buy the gear.

In a different note, I know multiple people, myself included, that have been looking for the script O hat for years to no avail. Why not sell some of the classic Omaha jerseys and cap styles? That way those of us who want gear we can wear in public, can actually purchase said gear.

by tcon125 on Nov 17, 2010 3:35 AM EST up reply actions

I think I actually want a StormChasers hat or shirt

I have plenty of Royals crap, so I had zero interest in Omaha Royals crap. There were some pretty terrible names under consideration, and I think this one was middle of the pack or better. Though it does conjure up images of Indepedent League teams like the T-Bones (a name I like) or bad Arena League football names like the KC Brigade/Command. I think this falls in the middle of those.

Do the teams in Europe just have city names for the most part?

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a team name from there other than Manchester United or Real Madrid, and I’m not sure those count as a name like Wizards. Most of the time it’s just where the team is located right?

Arsenal

Are named for the Royal Woolwich Arsenal, and old British army weapons depot.

There are few odd ones in England- Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Plymouth Argyle, Accrington Stanley

Most are not unique though, lots of Uniteds, lots of City/Town (as appropriate) a few Athletics and a few Rovers.

Really. It’s awesome. It’s probably more of a double-A name than a triple-A name, but that’s just a quibble. It’s original, specific, has a local focus, and is fun. A mascot is perhaps the least serious thing in the world, and this fits that bill perfectly. I’m in.

by labbadabba on Nov 16, 2010 10:34 AM EST reply actions

No

at least it relates to Omaha/Nebraska/the Great Plains.

The historical Golden Spike was driven into the ground in Utah. To call an Omaha team by that name was a terrible failure of imagination.

I'm going to assume the Golden Spikes were not named after the historical Golden Spike

I would imagine they were trying to say they had the best amateur talent in the country (too bad the other MiLB teams pay their players!), as well as it being the home of the College World Series:

I think this is a great choice for a name if they are changing from the Royals.

Geographically it makes sense, and opens up merchandising opportunities to people outside of the Royals faithful. Who hasn’t seen frat boy douchebags wearing hats that have dumb team names on them?

Kinda disappointed in the O logo with the bolt through it. The bolt needs to be bigger I think.

by AxDxMx on Nov 16, 2010 11:39 AM EST reply actions

ummmm

This is the type of hat that “frat boy douchebags” do NOT wear. College kids in general wear the hat of the team from their home town, or their favorite team…as long as it doesn’t look like a z-hat from the early 2000s. This hat fits that arena football/minor league/90’s mighty duck shitty graphics and font feel.

Also, kids in the midwest get made fun of for being “flyover” and in the ever expanding visibility to other “cooler” things in the world there is a huge push for kids to not do things that make them look “minor league” or small town, or not a big deal…if that makes sense. So in this case, having a logo and redesign which screams “everyone else did this 15 years ago” is not a good play to get the young and sensitive to being “flyover” crowd. (btw, of all the places I’ve ever been, Omaha best exemplifies this defensiveness to being thought of as not a big deal)

And in reality Frat DBs are more likely to wear a “it is so bad, it is a joke, haha I’m so witty” shitty hat they found at goodwill, or a low profile graphic polo/lacoste/prep hat.

a long fly ball to deep center field, back goes Damon to the track, the wall, and Gone!

by tcon125 on Nov 17, 2010 3:46 AM EST up reply actions

I like the hat.

My brother collects fun and funny minor league baseball hats. He is about as far from being a “frat boy douchebag” as you can get however, even when he was still in college (although now he works at the college, so maybe he still counts as being there, although now he’s the director of the university’s library, so maybe not), so if that is the demographic being sought, he’s no help.

I also like the alternate jersey. Not as crazy for the font used on the “SC” logo thing, but I definitely like the O with the thunderbolt. And I’m okay with the name choice trying to make it more specifically local (SC=Sarpy County & Storm Chasers, so clever!) and less “KC Junior.”

I’ve only been to one game in Omaha, but from listening to the conversations around me that night, those in my section definitely didn’t follow the KC Royals very closely. While I’m sure there are lots of people there who were big KC fans, there were also lots who knew the O-Royals line-ups but had no idea what happened to those players when they weren’t in Omaha. It makes sense to me to let that team have it’s own identity to better connect with the people in their community who might actually come to games multiple times a year instead of the ones like me who specifically make a road trip once in a great while to see the prospects (and Minda!).

by Gross(est) on Nov 17, 2010 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

Very, very important point. We care about baseball in Omaha because we’re KC Royals fans. People in the stands in Omaha – and around MiLB – are, by and large, fans of the team on the field at that location. It’s easy to forget that sometimes, but it’s very true and very important.
