Royals slightly overpay for Adam Dunn...
Please discuss why this should not at least be considered. This is the one true shot at Balboni's record. Look, if Moore was willing to pay Guillen 36 million, why not give Dunn a 2 or 3 year deal, if anything, just to hit bombs from the DH spot? Wouldn't this fall under the category of the Royals generically trying to "win" by getting a guy that people will buy tickets to see late in the season as he goes for his 40th HR?

I'm a big Dunn fan, but
unless something happens to unearth the logjam at 1B/DH (Butler, Ka’aihue, Hosmer), it doesn’t make sense to go after Dunn. Note I’m assuming moving him back to the OF is out of the question, considering Moore’s stance on OF defense being vital at the K.

I like Dunn too, BUT
if we aren’t competing what’s the point? DM is obviously trying to save money right now, with the goal hopefully being to deploy the saved money down the line so we can bring in a true superstar or 2 when it matters.
Yes
Let’s see what we have in Kila, who could very well be a younger, cheaper Dunn.

I'll hope for Dunn,
but I’m afraid he’s Carlos Pena with less power.
.220 BA, .320 OBP, 25-30 homers max.
Would that be so bad?
And Carlos Pena hasn’t posted an OBA as low as .320 since his rookie season. Even this year, when he was under the Mendoza Line, he posted a .325.

Yeah, I'd be happy with that
Carlos Pena with 35 fewer points of SLG would be a line of about:
.235/.355/.450

FWIW, CHONE's last update (August) had this line for Kila
.255/.364/.440
I’d be even happier with that.

i'll be shocked if he has a batting average that high....
which will bring down his OBP and take him from useful to not useful

I guess it depends on how low the BA is and how many walks he draws
If he pulls off something like Carlos Pena and manages a BA/OBP of .230/.350, I think he’d be more than useful.

i dont think he has pena power....
so i think pitchers will be less likely to be careful with him.

But he unquestionably
Has a great eye, which can make up for lack of power threat. Daric Barton, for example (and Kila has more power than Barton).
I guess the point is
We don’t know, so let’s find out.

If kila puts up the same line as Barton....
he’ll be an pretty good DH. I dont see 273 in Kilas future though.
And Barton is a very valuable player b/c he provides value on defense…no chance in hell kila does that.

If he has a BA of .230
I wonder how long he would last, despite the above average OBP
Unless I'm wrong...
at least 478 ABs

Kila Ka'aihue and Eric Hosmer are the reasons why
and there’s no doubt Dunn would be better in the short term. but Kila and Hosmer are a hell of a lot cheaper and Hosmer has a chance to be a just as good, if not better by the time that Dunn contract is getting close to the end.
if Dunn could play the outfield with any sense of competence, it’d be another thing. but if that were the case, he’d also be getting 15 MM plus pretty easily.

Let's give him a 1 year deal worth $14M
Backload it and don’t assume any of it at the deadline. Then, if it doesn’t trade, we take the Type A next year. :)
he's going to get about $14 million/yr over 3-5 years....
i bet we’d have to pay him $20 million this year at least to get him in on a 1 year deal

All of the above
plus everything that was said the last three offseasons when his name was mentioned (old player skills, his age, lack of position, production unlikely to match salary, etc.).
this
it just doesn’t seem to make sense… so, presumably, that probably means it’ll happen
for when I'm too lazy to come here, http://twitter.com/AtTheWall
As soon as the Royals have big money to spend on the FA market again...
…this kind of thing will definitely happen.
