Dutton ranks the Royals Prospects
Dutton gives a top 10 list. Not that I necessarily agree with it. He also gives a little blurb about 40 some prospects. Several good nuggets in there.

Funky top 10....
The rest of the specs by position is great stuff…..

There is something nice about simply ranking by positions.
Since prospects are so flaky, it makes some more sense to simply look at positions and say who is tops. Of course, depth makes a big difference here. If there were only a dozen decent prospects here, this format would be lame.
I agree w/ you on "ranking by positions"...
Also it is about depth @ position…

I never wanted Crow & still regret drafting Crow everytime I see Crow's name, but...
there is an arguement for ranking Crow in the top 10 & above Duffy…but I still disagree w/ it…

Also...
remember that 2010 was Crow’s 1st yr of full season baseball in his major league career & 1st highly competitive baseball in 18mths. Also remember where we as fans stood on Mous & Hos prior to 2010….

So you’re saying it might be reasonable to anticipate Mous & Hos to regress while Crow improves next year? That could happen but it isn’t what is happening.

what...how do you conclude that from what I said...???
In 2009 Mous & Hos both had bad yrs & all fans where highly concerned they were bust. A yr later ppl are singing their praises. We as fans were a prisioner of the moment. I’m saying wait a yr on Crow so we don’t repeat that same mistake, but you can just chose to right him off if u want to adding perspective…

can we still really put Crow in the top 10?

Yes we can & Crow probably still belongs in the top 10 based on talent...

FWIW: I never wanted Crow & still regret drafting Crow everytime I see Crow’s name…

Aggressive ranking on Dyson for sure. I hope he can figure out a way to get on base. A .350 or even a .325 OBP would make Dyson a pretty good player.

No. I believe that everyone agrees that Dyson will play plus defense in CF and steal about 60 bases a year. The question is really whether he can get on base. Like I’ve said before, if he develops some good contact skills or can draw a walk he will be valuable because he’ll turn those singles into doubles and those doubles into triples, or he’ll just steal his way to third.
And because that’s what everyone has seen in his ML debut they are likely to emphasize it because those speed tools have translated to the bigs. It’s one thing to see a guy speed around the minors. When he looks that much faster than everyone else except Pierre in the majors and shows he puts that speed to excellent use I think people are going to naturally give him a boost. Plus it’s all subjective so if Dutton talked to a couple scouts inside or outside the organization who like him a lot it will impact the ranking.
The idea of the Royals pressuring Dutton to rate Dyson highly is pretty off the wall. I assume you were kidding?
by WURoyal on Nov 7, 2010 2:09 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Wasn't kidding.
The Royals have the star in their back pocket and could easily make something like that happen. Now, it’s pretty unlikely I’ll grant you, but it is within the realm of possibility for sure.
Pressuring Dutton to include someone on his top 10 list is a pretty outrageous accusation and a very illogical leap to make.
Maybe someone spoke really highly of him, said he was going to get a half season look or so. Prospect lists are all about what a person values too. To suggest the royals pressured dutton into including Dyson on a top 10 list is hilarious.

Well, I mean they probably suggested that he be ranked aggressively.
They didn’t say “put dude in the top 10”. But whatever. We weren’t there. Last year this site debated if was even top 30. Just saying.
Honestly, I think the Royals could careless where Dutton ranks players...
Also, last yr I argued that Dyson should be raised in the rankings & possibly should be rated higher than D Rob, but was ridiculed by the “Royals Review” faithful…

He already has decent contact skills
He just hasn’t used them at the MLB level. Contact also does not equate to batting average or OBP, but it’s contact. You have to assume you’ll get at least close to league average BABIP which makes contact valuable…. especially with speed.
Here's what's not pretty outrageous
Dutton is no expert; therefore, he is unduly influenced by his contacts with Royals officials, who are unduly overrating Dyson.

same logic makes sense for Crow being ranked surprisingly high, too

Crow's ranked based off talent despite his 1st season lack of production...

That is the interesting thing
This probably reflects his conversations with Royals officials more than his own opinion so we can glean a bit about what the organization thinks of these guys.

This kid I've heard good things about.
Humberto Arteaga (16, 5-11, 160, R/R): You won’t see him for a while because he’s just 16, but he’s another Dominican dandy who is already creating an impression.
Whats the early report again?
I remember soft hands, range and arm for SS. Contact-oriented bat but no power. Speed?
did anyone read the article?
he interviewed 45 people outside the organization to get these rankings.
