The All-John Schuerholz-Drafted Team

I was inspired by this post on Pat Gillick, who was voted into the Hall of Fame this week. How does John Schuerholz, architect of the 1980s Royals and 1990s Braves (and best-selling author whose book you can still read in our book club!) stack up against Hall of Famer Pat Gillick? Pretty damn well.

These are all player drafted under his watch as General Manager:

C Brian McCann
1B Jeff Conine
2B Marcus Giles
3B Kevin Seitzer
SS Yunel Escobar
LF Jason Heyward
CF Brian McRae
RF Jermaine Dye
DH Bo Jackson

Bench:C Mike MacFarlane, IF Kelly Johnson, IF Mark DeRosa, OF Ryan Langerhans, OF Gary Thurman

SP David Cone
SP Bret Saberhagen
SP Kevin Appier
SP Mark Gubicza
SP Jason Schmidt

RP Tommy Hanson
RP Kevin Millwood
RP Jason Marquis
RP John Rocker
RP Adam Wainwright
CL Tom Gordon

Among the drafted players he failed to sign: 1B Will Clark, OF Jose Cruz Jr. and CB/OF Deion Sanders.

Other "All-GM Draft" lists here

Depressing contrast:

All Allard Baird Team

C Matt Tupman
1B Kila Kaaihue
2B Donnie Murphy
SS Mike Aviles
3B Alex Gordon
LF Mel Stocker
CF Mitch Maier
RF Shane Costa
DH Billy Butler

SP Zack Greinke

RP Jonah Bayliss
RP Devon Lowery
RP Ryan Braun
RP Billy Buckner
CL JP Howell

Hopefully Dayton learned a thing or two from Schuerholz.
