Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Does Ned know these guys well?

A thought on the Grienke trade which I have not seen amongst the thousands of comments on here already: is it likely that we chose these Milwaukee players on the basis of recommendation from Ned Yost? Would he have been reasonably familiar with them during his days in Milwaukee? Or were they too far from his notice at the time?

Another question I want to explore, who in this trade would you say came over for the value of Yuni? I'm curious because when evaluating GMDM's trading ability we tend to examine an entire chain of trades if one player was flipped for another. So until last week, the return for Mike Macdougal was just Yuni. Now we packaged Yuni with Grienke and got these four guys in return, so what would we say we now have to show for Mac the Ninth?

Based on the fact that Yost has been IN baseball for 4 decades, I would assume that he has cursory knowledge of every “key” prospect and player in the organization in which he works.

Yost was a terrible player, but he did help turn the Brewers around.

Im sure, but

what I mean is, do we have special insider knowledge of players in the Brewers system due to Ned’s tenure as their manager that should give us more confidence in players we get from them as opposed to, say, the Nats or Yankees?

I think people read into this stuff too much.

Any player that is TRADED for you would hope that the Royals have scouted them thoroughly. Ned offers any insights he may have into a player, but the end result is that Moore just like any other GM relies on his scouting and development people to provide insight,

Moore identified a position of weakness and addressed based on available talent, and an interested partner. Moore did a pretty good job of improving the Royals defensively long term, and adding some interesting pitching too.

The bottom line here is that Greinke had a lot control, and Moore in rare form, did the Royals a huge service, maybe even beyond his tenure.

Escobar was 2 for 3 as a Brewer managed by Yost

and since then, he’s no longer hitting .667, so obviously they had a strong bond.

im pretty sure that Yuni was just given to them....

he had no value in the trade. Milwaukee was willing to take him just in case they couldnt get another SS

Exactly. Yuni is a rape-prevention device.

So you guys would say

That after all has been done, we are at the end of the “trade chain” of Mike Macdougal.

We got Parraz

who we let go for nothing. So that avenue is a dead end.

From what Olney said Macha kind of jacked with Escobar

taking him out in favor of Craig Counsell in games. Looking at B-Ref Macha did this to him quite a bit the last couple months of the season when they were out of the race. Seems counterproductive to building a young players confidence but it is Ken Macha.

Escobar was known for clashing with the coaching staff over his conditioning

I think it was Macha (kcscoliny also alludes to another clash). I would guess maybe Yost vouched for him and put Dayton’s mind at ease somewhat.

Listening to MLB radio Sunday

They interviewed Corey Hart and got the impression that Macha had problems relating to most of the players based on some of Hart’s comments, so clashing with Macha is not necessarily a negative trait on the player’s part.

I would characterize Yuni as a

Poison Pill.

Probably the most underrated part of this trade, was Moore being able to convince Milwaukee to take him in the trade.

Zack really ought to think about ditching his work to become more of a GB pitcher – the MIL infield defense is going to be HORRIBLE this year.
