Royals Sign Right-Handed Reliever Zach Miner to Minor League Contract
Let us now commence spending a year spelling his first name "Zack" and his last name "Minor." Fun signing!
Miner was drafted by the Braves in 2000 and is coming off of a season long elbow injury. Hard to find fault with taking a chance on a fairly competent Arm for a low price.

Considering that
we don’t need 5 starters until around the 14th game or so.. Miner might pitch in Omaha then pitch in KC in the first game that a 5th starter is needed
or we’ll insist on having a 5 man rotation even when we can go with 4 without endangering any of the pitchers.
Zach Miner is my bet to be the 5th starter. He probably won’t last long due to the lousy K:BB numbers. But at least his K/9 numbers are better than Mazzaro’s and O’Sullivan’s.

there are options
he could go into relief if starting doesn’t work for him. But right now, he fits the mold for guy who starting him doesn’t really hurt this team’s future.
Here’s how April shapes up. Opening Day is on March 31st this year.

well, not really
just thinking that he’s never been a full time starter (or recently) and is coming off of an arm injury
Good point about the TJ... but it has been a year...
…as BH points out above, we don’t need a 5th starter until late April. I would add to that the fact that we can probably expect an SP callup (or two) in June. So we might be talking about someone who only start 5 or 6 games anyway. In other words, we aren’t really talking about a “full time starter” anyway. Miner started 5 games in 2009 (and 13 in 2008). If he proves healthy in ST, it wouldn’t seem too crazy to me…
We Need 1-4
Starters, too. He could crack that group.

mlbtr says he had TJ at the end of May
he probably won’t be ready to pitch in games until at least a year from then.

Mazzaro vs. Miner
The following are stats from their relatively short MLB careers
IP
Mazzaro 131
Miner 357
FIP, xFIP, tERA
Mazzaro 5.04, 4.88, 5.27
Miner 4.49, 4.69, 4.77
FIP and xFIP as a starter
Mazzaro 4.95, 4.83
Miner 4.67, 4.59
So why is it that I’m supposed to think that Mazzaro will be better than someone like Miner in 2011? Because Mazzaro is so young and is likely to improve significantly? Should we really expect a pitcher to improve a lot from his age 23 to age 24 season? I hope so. I don’t think it usually works that way.

Exactly what I was thinking
Almost the same statistical profile (Miner gets a few more groundballs), basically the same pitches and almost same fastball velocity, and similar size.
They both look like a couple of serviceable fifth starters to me

Which Makes One
A fourth starter? An entire rotation of fives?

Royals' rotation for 2011:
Day 1: nobody
Day 2: nobody
Day 3: nobody
Day 4: nobody
Day 5: everybody

I think the stats show that it earned its seed in the DMIT

I don’t understand the desire to harp on Mazzaro’s ML stats though. It’s common knowledge prospects don’t immediately succeed. For the same reason, the Royals time for contention is actually looking like 2013 and beyond. I think it’s reasonable to predict for Mazzaro to improve his numbers going forward, especially when he has shown better stuff at times (such as last July).

I'd be more optimistic if Mazzaro had been a good prospect who performed very well in the minors
When merely ok minor league stats are followed by mediocre major league stats, I don’t think there’s much reason to believe a player is going to develop beyond mediocrity.

and it gets worse if you being O'Sullivan up
really, the rotation outside of Hochevar and Davies is horrid. And Hoch isn’t consistent and Davies is Davies
If only there was someone out there to sign. ;D

It seems like people are deluding themselves that Mazzaro is some kind of legitimate #3 SP
I don’t even think he’s the third best starter on this team.

Just to clarify
My very rough SP depth chart would be something like
Hochevar
Davies
Campillo (if healthy and they haven’t released him)
Teaford
Miner
Mazzaro
O’Sullivan
Teaford is only that high becase he’s an older prospect and I’d like for him to get a bunch of starts in 2011 to see if he’s anything before the Royals cut him loose.

But I'd probaby give Mazzaro the nod for the rotation just to see if he actually does improve
If he doesn’t then he’s interchangeable with dozens of other fifth starter types.

Regarding Mazzaro
I don’t think he’ll be great. He may be our #2/3 early this season, but that would make him a borderline #5 anywhere else. His numbers in Double- and Triple-A do give a little cause for hope that he could put it together. His 137.1 IP in the Texas League as a 21-year-old were solid. He had a 1.10 WHIP with 6.8 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, 2.89 K/BB. Granted his BABIP was a little low (.277, I think, but it’s conceivable I calculated it incorrectly). I don’t know that he’ll be great, but there is at least a little reason to be hopeful.

not to call out any specific sites but
the dude who typed that Mazzaro could break out like Chad Billingsley is selling a bit high on him. For one thing, Billingsley was pretty good in the minors, and Mazzaro really isn’t good. Mazzaro and O’Sullivan are a lot better if you ignore the obvious fact that strikeouts are pretty much vital for a young starter (who doesn’t throw knuckleballs) to succeed.

Crap trade
Another DM abortion. Trading an above average DDJ for “a little reason to be hopeful”.
DM can’t get fired soon enough.

I think that
Having a rotation of…
Hochevar
Davies
Mazzaro
Teaford/Miner
O’sullivan
…means all of these guys are about two slots too high. God I hope those lefties develop quickly.

The funny thing is that both Hochevar and Davies have the “stuff” to win 15 games.
If the Royals can somehow keep Hoch healthy, the Royals could take some steps forward in 2011.
The great thing is that most of the team will be younger, better defensively and more athletic. I hope Kendall has a set back in his recovery and decides to shut it down!
The defense could lead to less earned runs, could it not?
Miner is another mystery pitcher, if healthy he has a nice live arm, and the good thing is that TJ surgery is at like 90% now.
It'll Be Very
Difficult not to improve on defense, and that has to help the staff.

Anyone know?
How many starting pitchers have turned it around and proved to be above average after posting 131 below average starts (Davies)? He’s pretty much essential to the rotation in 2011 but that’s not a good thing.
Off the top of my head
I would guess Jorge of the Rose?

Miner always dominated us
If he can give us 95 IP @ a 4.40 ERA he will be one of the best pitchers on this staff, lol.
I hope this Zach turns out to be a MINER version of ZacKKKKKK

At least
We have a use for all those Z strikeout signs we made in 2009.

Mike Aviles has given you all a false expectation of a timeframe for return from the DL
Most players take about 18-24 months to recover from Tommy John surgery. And if anyone takes less time, it’s position players. The last thing we need is a pitcher trying to come back from surgery too early.
See no reason
Teaford can’t break camp as a starter in this group. If not now, then when?
