Looming in the background, of course, is Willie Bloomquist, who played seven different positions and made just 10 errors despite all the switching around. "He's unbelievable. Willie can do all," Hillman said. "Willie's our ace in the hole. He's one of those guys who'll never get the credit he's due."
This whole article is full of brilliant nuggets of wisdom from Trey and Dayton on defensive stats and what makes a good player. Who better to learn from? Best Royals.com article in a long time.

"I'm cautiously very optimistic
No wonder Guillen is always angry he has cranky legs. “Guillen, who battled cranky legs last season”
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
And right on cue...
“And with Mike [Aviles] going down and Alex [Gordon] going down — well, you know the deal,” Hillman continued. “I’m cautiously very optimistic that we can be a greatly improved team — especially defensively, which is going to make our pitchers better.”
It’s a good thing they're not blaming the injuries anymore.
That seems like a more appropriate name.

Delusional, Stupid Or
Both?
“Defense, to me, is a product of athleticism, fundamentals and concentration,” Moore said.
“Certainly there are statistics that play a part of that, but defensive statistics are very misleading and unreliable … every statistician that I speak to will tell you that, including our own. Statistics are something to look at, but they are not the most important part of evaluating a player. You want defensive players that are very sure-handed, players that are instinctive to position themselves appropriately, players that are two or three steps ahead of a certain situation — that’s all part of the defensive player.”
In adding Ankiel, Podsednik, Kendall and Getz to the regular lineup, the general manager believes he’s fulfilled those qualifications
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
see, defensive stats only measure stuff like range, error rate, and stuff
obviously, “instincts, sure-handedness, and positioning” have nothing to do with that

"Things could always be worse." - Buddy Bell
So basically, Alberto Callaspo won't be in the Opening Day lineup.
Our 2nd best hitter next year.
Who we are paying almost nothing.
Who is young, and should be entering his offense prime.
WHO IS A SECOND BASEMAN!

maybe
Hillman means that someone else ran up a bunch of credit card debt for Bloomquist a few years back in an identity-theft scheme, and he can’t get it cleared up with the authorities.
