Former Royal Prospect Dan Gutierrez Suspended 50 Games for Drug Use
Danny Gutierrez got popped today with a 50 game suspension for adderall, an amphetemine used to treat ADD. D-Gut apparently has a prescription, but didn't fill out the proper paperwork on time.
Schaum's Twitter feed has a number of nice takes on this.

I am soooooooo glad we traded him
We do not need cancer like this in our farm system. Especially after reading the following line from that article:
Gutierrez, who was recently ranked as the ninth best prospect in the Rangers system by Baseball America
/do NOT want
i'd bet you a large sum of money we've currently got guys in our system doing worse things that adderol
yeah I was joking a bit
I do not think taking medication for ADD or failing to fill out the proper paperwork qualifies as cancer or a reason that we shouldn’t keep or use a player. After all, this is somewhat similar to Greinke
Merely poking fun at the point that Goot is a top prospect in another program. And that perhaps the Royals clubhouse is pointing to this and calling it a successful trade due to the time he will miss
seriously
but honestly, his career is not over
even if the rangers release him/trade him, he’ll keep getting second and third chances… too much talent
This is interesting
Because he is not on the 40-man roster, Gutierrez is subject to the rules governing minor league baseball. Minor League rules stipulate a player receive a 50-game suspension. Had he been on the 40-man roster, he would have received a warning
Are you serious? Not trying to defend Gutierrez here, rules are rules. But it’s ridiculous that MLB and MiLB are not held to the same standard here.
Waiting for April.
I disagree
It’s part of actually MAKING it. He hasn’t made it yet…

Umm, not following you here
Basically you’re saying that you do not need to be upheld to the same standard as someone who has “not made it” if you’ve “made it”. I disagree.
So are you saying that it’s ok for Zack Greinke to file his paperwork late on his anti-depressant meds but not Danny Gutierrez. Fine. By this logic, a police officer and police cadet should not be governed by the same rules regarding police brutality. Or, as a less extreme example, it’s ok for your boss to file his taxes late and receive no penalty, but you have to file them on time.
Waiting for April.
It certainly doesn't end his career
Talent and good performance can still get him to the majors. But this incident (plus his dust up with the Royals which precipitated the trade) will lead organizations to think that he has “character” and “make up” issues.

Those issue sometimes determine whether he will ever get the chance to perform
…there’s a difference between being a jerk (Bradley) and not being able to get your life in order. I don’t know if that’s what’s going on with D-Gut, but if so, you’re making an apples-to-oranges comparison. When scouts talk about a prospect’s “make up” they are often talking about whether the guy has a chance to even make it to the bigs, regardless of talent.
yeah....
but gutz is talented enough, like bradley, like callaspo, that he’ll keep getting chances as long as his talent develops

I understand what you are saying...
…but his talent will be irrelevant if his off-the-field problems are serious enough. That’s all I was saying. Ask Ambiorix Burgos what I’m talking about.
he probably hadn't taken it yet so he wasn't concentrating and forgot to fill out the paperwork

I speak from experience
one of my daughters was diagnosed with ADD and was on adderall. Without it, something like this would routinely slip by. Much better concentration with the medication. I think this is an over-reaction on MLB’s part.

Dan Gutierrez obviously doesn't understand how drug tests are evaluated
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs.
Can't get enough of me? Check out my Twitter feed.
He agreed with his agent that he didn't need to file paperwork, and milb and team rules
are stupid, and he can do anything he wants because he is a prospect.
Go Royals!

Unfortunately...
…these type of positive tests…..just can’t be educated. We can’t educate Dan Gutierrez on the importance of advance notice.
It’s very apparent to me who is juicing in the game and who isn’t.

If he got his perscription in Kansas and filled it in Missouri
Would it be showing great lateral movement?

Even if this was no big deal, it's not coincidence that this happened to Gutierrez
He has a history of being irresponsible and this is no exception. He has constantly tried to get off easy with the prospect label. Even top prospects have to fill out paperwork and I’d be willing to bet that most other top prospects fill out prescription waivers in a timely manner.
I say good riddance to Dan. At this point I’d rather have the two fringe prospects in KC’s system than a better prospect who hasn’t played a full year in, well, ever.
I'm in agreeance.
Now, it may be okay if Danny fails as a baseball player, but I hope the guy figures out his life…

Is Betancourt considered to be a fringe prospect even though he is on the major league roster?

No, more like tomato, turd.
The tomato isn’t that appealing (Smith, Pina), but it will give you nourishment and possibly compliment something better. Turds (Yuni) are revolting.

Warden
I am not sure what u mean…but ask me specifically and I will do my best to answer
I did find this interesting though…the Rangers did not know he was being medicated and this is from Rangers GM Daniels
"We’re disappointed. While it appears this may have been the result of taking a legal drug, it demonstrates poor judgment that Danny didn’t let us know he needed a TUE, and that violates MLB’s program.
"It’s a setback, as he appeared ready for a strong year beginning in Frisco’s rotation. With hard work, that’s still possible. To his credit, Danny has communicated with us through this process and apologized to the organization. He’s also agreed to help educate his teammates so that they benefit from the situation. I expect him to set the example for our players in Surprise this spring with his work ethic."
Another thing…if you read the post on Goot to the right of this page from when he got traded…u will find some interesting tidbits by someone named gashousegang…who I hear looks alot like me
yeah, I had the gashousegang thing figured out
And like I said, I’m a fan of what you do for the organization. Just didn’t get the point of tweeting the same thing 3 times saying “not surprised, just surprised about what he was caught for”.
I read that as “he’s so stupid, he does drugs” like that makes him unique in professional baseball.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
He's just above the law.
I’m surprised he didn’t get hit for something a little more serious… or maybe he did, but he got them to only announce the adderal.
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.
the reason
After I posted the first I assumed he got nailed for a drug much worse than a prescribed med…the second was when I found out what it was for and thought i needed to clarify that it was not a hardcore drug…..the third was when i saw what all the Rangers fans were saying (an hour after the first two posts)
the line you talk about is because I am generally surprised this was the drug that he got popped for…although, after I posted what Daniels said I am curious to the authenticity of Goots use of this medicine
Frisco?
So their AAA team is, like, half an hour away from their major league club?
That’s kind of cool….I’d love to be able to go see an Omaha Royals game on a whim…even though I guess it’s only about 3 hours from KC.
our Omaha teams have been about as exciting as our KC teams recently....
now, once we have some prospects there, it’d be worthwhile

Frisco is our AA affiliate.
Our AAA affiliate is Oklahoma City, which is really only about two and a half or three hours away.
Was Gutierrez the one with the agent problems?
where the Royals didn’t like his switching of agents to Boras I believe? If its him, then man, you have to be pissed as all hell at your agent. That is the kind of thing that they should be taking care of.
Unless, Boras thought he could force the Rangers to throw him on the 40 man to get him more money. I could honestly see him being insane enough to do something like this.
But if he is the pitcher that switched to Boras, great move there buddy.
If not, his agent is just a dumbass.
Boras
(the switch to Borasa)This was not frowned upon by the Royals…in fact it was encouraged…I really think you need to study the evidence on this one (the suspension)…believe plenty of it has been submitted on this thread alone…and the past threads…if you have the time to read this thread and the thread on Goot on the Rangers board
The Boras group for all the knocks they get are a great group to be with….they will also drop a player if they feel that he is not worth their time….i would imagine their will be discussion about Goot on this suspension
I wonder if this was a legitimate prescription for the treatment of something (like ADD) or recreational use
As others have pointed out, in addition to its legitimate therapeutic use, Adderall is a popular recreational drug. It is a psychostimulant which is chock full of amphetamines. He might even have a legal prescription and still be using it recreationally.

I Had A
Friend in Topeka who had 2 fat girls going to a doctor in North Topeka getting a month’s supply of Black Beauties every month. He traded them pot for speed; they were more interested in getting high and eating than losing weight. They kept getting fatter and he got really skinny.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

If only Gutierrez could have learned from his mistakes and grown up a little
He would have been able to execute the 3-1. Instead, he couldn’t do it and we had to ship him out.
