Gut Response: Are the Royals Better than the Astros?

Gut response: who will be better in 2010, the Astros or the Royals?

Star-divide

2009 Records: Houston: 74-88, Kansas City: 65-97

2009 Pythag: Houston: 68-94, Kansas City: 66-96

The Astros has a pretty hilarious roster in 2009: Aaron Boone, Darin Erstad, Mike Hampton, Jeff Fulchino, Jeff Keppinger and Mike Hampton all played for them. Of course, the Royal roster was also funny, as they sported Bruce Chen and Sidney Ponson, among others.

Key Astro Additions: Brett Myers, Jason Michaels, Brandon Lyon, Pedro Feliz, Cory Sullivan

The astros are bad

but the Royals are worse.

Funny I was asking Lance Berkman that a couple of days ago

His parents live 2 houses down from me and he was in town for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. For the record he said the Astros were miles better then the Royals. He is kind of a dick in person, but I have known him for years.

I dont know if the Astros are miles better than KC, but Berkman alone makes their offense better.

However though… Greinke > Berkman

And I voted yes,

so that probably means I’m being too optimistic again this year, but I think the Astros could be historically bad with a little luck.

by AxDxMx on Feb 12, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

I voted no purely because I think the Astros will have a better record due to being in the very meh NL Central...

And because Push wasn’t an option

This one was close for me.

But, I voted yes – I guess that I gave the Royals a little extra credit for being in the AL (& playing tougher teams than the NL central). I also would have voted Push if it was an option, so I guess our votes cancel each other out.

Guess we’ll have to wait until we play them Jun 15-17 (Hey! These 2 play on my birthday!). No one gets out alive!

Finally, a worthy challenger

The easier schedule tips it slightly in the Astros’ favor for this year only, but Houston is one of the organizations that is probably in worse shape than the Royals overall.

by Gopherballs on Feb 12, 2010 3:18 PM EST reply actions

I voted no...

But if the bullpen doesn’t implode…again, the Royals might flirt with .500 next year IMO. I know its pretty far fetched at this point,
but with a good rotation anythings possible…and by anything I mean a .500 season. The complete lack of offense is amazing.

The Royals getting to a .500 season would piss me off, because it would validate the process.

Well you gotta start somewhere...I guess

I have a little optimism mainly because of the starting pitching and the probability of the central being a weak division again.

I guess if we were to hit .500 I would only want it to happen

by Greinke winning 1-0 games and the Royals losing 2-9 games. And I hope it is sparked by a mid season run when Yuni gets benched after batting .220 (with a .228 OBP).

My spreadsheet (mostly CHONE w/ Jeff's UZR projections and my own playing time estimations)

actually has Houston as the worst team in baseball in 2010, and that was even before I adjusted for the leagues.

Basically, their only good players are Berkman, Oswalt, Wandy, and Hunter Pence (who is overrated, if still good).

This doesn’t take into account their disastrous minor league situation.

At the moment, I have them projected at 63-99… that seems insanely low for any projection… I’m not sure what the deal is, but yeah, 100 losses isn’t out of the question for Houston.

I was trying just to list the good players

Lee can still hit, but it doesn’t overcome his dreadful defense. One of the worst contracts in recent history, without being retrospective.

I mean without "hindsight"

I meant to say that even at the time, it was horrible. Vernon Wells has turned out to be worse, but at the time, as bad as the Wells contract looked, it was more defensible than Carlos Lee.

Zito and Soriano probably take the cake, though.

After Wandy, and Oswalt (Only if he bounces back though), There rotation looks like something that came out of a dogs ass.

His CHONE projection is pretty meh.

If JR Towles lives up to his projection (-7 offense, +2 defense as a catcher), you can add him to their list of good players.

I voted yes

The Astros are horrid. and while the royals aren’t much better, I have already predicted that the Astros will lose 100 this year. We We’ll see though

by focs on Feb 12, 2010 4:05 PM EST reply actions

royals

royals are better. If the astros were in the AL, they’d lose 100, and I don’t think we will lose that many this year. Maybe 95 losses, but 100 would surprise me.

by kcfan92 on Feb 12, 2010 5:42 PM EST reply actions

Good question.

I would say we are better, but they will finish with a better record because of the league difference. The NL Central is especially weak looking this year.

Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

by royaldaddy on Feb 13, 2010 6:02 PM EST via mobile reply actions

the AL Central is weak looking this year

How many times do the Royals play the Red Sox and Yankees? Depending on that, the Royals could have weaker competition.

by Salty on Feb 14, 2010 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

The Royals

Play Boston 7 times (3 at home, 4 on the road) and the Yankees 8 times (4 home and away).

by kcbottom9th on Feb 14, 2010 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

I am going to say Yes

… but not by much. Both teams will probably finish with around the same record – but the Royals play in a tougher League, though they both play in rather poor divisions.

I am currently running the entire 2010 season through my baseball simulator using the actual 2010 schedule, playing each game 10,000 times. In this exercise I am currently running the mid September games – so I am almost done. I am having each team use a five man rotation, but having to cycle in a 6th and 7th starter on their depth chart every once in a while. Currently, the Royals have almost the exact same record as the Astros. There is actually one team with a worse record than both the Astros and Royals and that is the Cleveland Indians. I was kind of surprised at that result, but a closer look at the Indians and they were pretty bad in 2009 and haven’t done much to bolster themselves in 2010. We’ll see.

I'll say the Royals are better

even if their record doesn’t necessarily reflect it this season. Of course, this is rather like saying a root canal without anesthesia is less painful than bowel surgery without anesthesia; it may be true but you would rather not experience it anyway.

i think too many astros fans voted

or the people who voted late were really pessimistic. it’s been something like 80% no the last two days.
