From the Hill-man's mouth
The plan this year — as it was last year — is for Bloomquist to serve as a utility player capable of filling any role except catcher and pitcher. He seems likely to serve as the club’s primary backup outfielder but also projects as the primary backup to shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt — at least until Mike Aviles rounds into form.
Bloomquist could also draw time at second base, his best infield position, and at third base. He played seven positions last season and started at six.
"Physically, I think he’ll be fine to do everything (once the season starts)," Hillman said. "Second and center are his two best positions.
"Quite frankly, the question before we signed Willie, as it is with every utility guy, is can he play shortstop? He played it better than I anticipated. He did a pretty good job for us."

No. No. NO.
He played shortstop so well
We traded one of our best minor league pitchers for another shortstop.

wow
I still fail to see their unquestioning love of Bloomy. They treated him practically as their most valuable player last year.

his stats also suffered due to his
lack of being good at baseball

but he's awesome
as long as you keep him in a hermetically sealed chamber

Is This Chamber
On the 40 man roster? ’Cause that would suck.

So if I read this correctly, they are planning to limit the amount of Bloomquist grit for now ...
… but by the time the season starts they hope Bloomquist will be able to provide infield grit as well as outfield grit.
"We’re going to get regular reports on how his knees are doing," manager Trey Hillman said. "We’re going to be careful at the start of camp in how many reps we ask him to do until he gets the strength back in those knees.
"He’ll probably get most of his reps in the outfield because (the grass) is softer (than the infield dirt). And there’s less flexing and bending. I don’t have a timetable, but you might not see him on the infield dirt until the second half of camp."

Spurs? Ugh (good article though)
This season is best described as pocket jacks. We went all in, were called, and an ace came on the flop. Our pocket jacks were just not as good as we thought. (If ever there were a reverse jinx article, this would be it.)
Ace on the Flop = Oklahoma City Thunder ;)
From the same article
In fact, are there any Oklahoma City Thunder fans out there willing to make a fan trade? I am on the block. Your team is fun and exciting. My team is old and depressing.
Are they the most underrated team in the league?
I mean they have a potential MVP candidate in Durant, some really exciting young players like Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green. I think James Harden has upside. They have some nice role players in Nick Collison, Thabo Sefolosha and DJ White. I think they could use a bit more depth…maybe another vet or two to give them some size? But they will be an exciting team to watch in the West and I think they have a smart front office that can build around Durant and Westbrook. They could become a beast in the West, especially if the Spurs and Mavs get old quick, Kobe stops caring, Portland never gels and the Nuggets become dysfunctional.
I hated that they moved from Seattle, but I have to admit, they’re a fun team to watch.

i don't think it's so much that they're underrated
that they won’t really get the attention until they beat someone in the playoffs, when the tough gets going. young teams make spurts like this (though Durant is for real), but until you topple the veteran teams (Denver, for instance) when it matters, they’re still an “also-ran”.

chilequiles
i think they were overhyped to me. like i would be talking about it for years (i guess i am). they were okay, i just need to eat them with the expectations of it being just another meal, let the chilequiles do their work.

The Pirates link is interesting
…even Dave Littlefield knew enough to go through the motions of trading way older players on a bad team to get new ones who might one day help the team contend. That’s just Running A Bad Team 101.
If the same thing applied to Dayton Moore, wouldn’t we have traded our older vets a few times in the past few years? I think GMDM did in fact fail class 101. The last several years it seems as though we’ve only traded away a few older players to get younger talent in. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Kyle Davies for Octavio Dotel. The rest of the trades where just pieces here or there…
If the Royals are out of contention this year, who would they trade? (I guess I should say SHOULD) We’ve got a few older players on the roster. Not necessarily guys that could be traded…
Obviously JoGui should go and his contract shouldn’t be an issue. I’m sure someone will want a RH pinch hitter for the playoff run. Bloomquist is in the last year of his contract. Farnsworth is in the last year and likely to blow out his arm starting. Cruz is in his last year. Someone might need a RH arm for the pen. Anyone else bring any interest? Meche has value, therefore won’t be moved…

I like checking that Pirates blog
it seems like the local media and many fans are really against what the pirates did, people are still angry they didn’t keep Dougie Mientkiewicz etc
Huntington is taking an interesting approach
When Huntington took over, Washington was probably the only franchise in worse shape than the Pirates. He then traded off the expensive veterans for whatever he could get. The Pirates are still short on elite talent, basically Alvarez and McCutchen, and maybe Sanchez as a near-elite player given his position, but they are amassing a bunch of young cheap players who project as league average. In particular, Huntington seems to have targeted a lot of Alex Gordon types — former highly regarded prospects who have not become stars but still could become (or already are) league average or even a little better than that — LaRoche, Milledge, Tabata, Clement, and to a lesser degree, Hernandez and Veal. Huntington has picked a couple of decent players off the trash heap in Garrett Jones and Brandon Jones. Another positive is that the team has few guaranteed financial obligations beyond this year and the core of the team is made of 0-3 players, so the Pirates would be in position to bring in free agent help to fill in the holes that the farm system cannot. They still need more pitchers, but the Pirates could be a solid team in the next couple of years with room to improve.
They also play in a very weak division
The Cardinals are usually the team to beat. Milwaukee tries hard to put together a winning ball club, Cincinnati is better, Chicago has run their franchise down with some bad contracts. Houston has a bad GM…..
…the time could be coming for the Pirates if they can get by the Cy Young bound Cardinals.

problem was GMDM didn't pass the pre-req to get into Bad Team - 101

He thought the team could contend. He was wrong. Now that he knows they’re bad, will that change his tactics?

My Wife Was
10 years older than me, and I always had a predilection for older women in my youth. Now that I’m approaching 55, I find myself going the other way, although my current favorite is 59.. The others have been in their mid-40’s.
