Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Friday Completely Open Thread

You know what I miss? Game threads.

If the Royals took infield this afternoon, and I could somehow watch it, I would crank out 500 comments in two hours.

So anyway, it's Friday... we're about to have a three-day "don't leave the house" snowstorm in DC... baseball's getting closer but is still actually incredibly far away.

So whaddya got?

Does it bother anyone else that the Twins seem to be running away with the division before the season starts?

I’m used to them looking mediocre in the offseason, then somehow ending up in the mix at the end of the season. After the Hudson signing, I have them tied with the As as the best team in the AL (outside of the Al East Big Three).

Weird.

Of course, Kenny Williams is having another bizarro offseason, to the White Sox might win 96 games.

yes and yes

white sox are always good for a “they could win 75 or 95” squad… and when I go to South Side Sox and lurk I can never get a handle on how they feel about the team either

The Kenny and Ozzie Show is fun to watch

and I actually envy it

But they’re so unpredictable it would be maddening to watch it on my own team

They really are the only team other than the Twins with a shot… If Delmon craps the bed again, it could get interesting

I’ve said it before, but Chase Utley has been almost as good as Mauer’s 2009 for about the last three years, and people stil don’t realize he’s the best player on his own team. Maybe JoPo can take some time out from kissing Pujols, Mauer, and Pete Rose’s ass to write about that.

I’ve lived in NM, Chicago, CT, NY, and (of course) glorious KC. There are only two metro areas of significance that have never attracted me: LA and Houston. i think NY is the more motivating city

L.A. has too many slackers (me included) and with the good weather and the beach, it’s easy to just relax rather than get off your ass and actually do something. also the “feel-good-don’t-harm-others-karma” vibe, which is nice in and of itself, but often counter-productive to personal motivation.

Same

She knows Greinke (and Soria, because he lives across the street from my folks) but that’s it. Loves going to see them though when they play in the Bay Area, and gets endless enjoyment out of how willing KC fans are to talk to one another even though they’re complete strangers.

Sidebar: The first baseball game she ever went to was KC in Oakland with me and, on the way into the stadium, as we were talking, a(nother) guy in a KC cap was walking opposite us, heading where we just were on my left side. Without breaking stride or our conversation, dude and I hi-fived and just kept walking. She still finds that funny and uses it as her go-to example of friendly KC people.

Sidebar 2: She has fully adopted the Jayhawks. Originally, this was under the condition that I root for her alma mater (Michigan State). Now however, she’s all in. Loves ’em.

I'm very lucky

The wife loves baseball as much as I do. She grew up in Memphis, going to Chicks games when they were the Royals’ AA team. They had season tickets pretty much every year, so she really got to know lots of players from the Royals’ early ‘90s teams. As such, she has an irrational love of David Howard. But don’t get her started on Shane Halter…

"Irrational love of David Howard"

The “irrational” is redundant: any love of David Howard is by definition “irrational.”

Reminds me of my only trip to Omaha for the Royals back in ’91 or ’92. Howard had already been up to the show, and was by far the most popular guy on the team. I was amazed at how truly slow he was, and made my views quite vocally known to anyone around to listen, almost all of whom were season ticket holders. The old guys all laughed along, but on younger guy looked like I had just kicked his dog. Good times.

That seems like a more appropriate name.

It takes a lot of energy

to explain enough to have her understand why I’m pleased (rarely) or upset (often) with what’s happening, e.g. the Betancourt deal: “But I thought they needed a new shortstop.” And she really doesn’t get following the offseason. But she likes going to the games—we’ve been to the K every year for the last 4 or so, and gone to a game for 3 different minor leagues affiliates since 2007. She will show interest at times and listens to games with me (we have no cable/satellite and MLB.com seems so wrong, so I don’t get to watch games). And she wears her “Revive ’85” shirt with pride here in Cardinals country, so she’s got the right attitude.

Random unrelated note from Cardinals country: I had a woman at church tell me the Royals will be better this year “since they have Ankiel now.” Ah, Cardinal fans.

…but sometimes I get my dad’s help for laughs. He’s crazy.

He works on electrical appliances without shutting off the power. Honest, we installed a dishwasher this year that was supposed to be hardwired to the power source (i.e. no plug). It took me more than 30 seconds to locate the proper circuit breaker, so he said “don’t bother,” and proceeded to twist a series of electrical caps onto live wires. Sparks were flying, but he was fine. Crazy.

You should see him up in a tree with a chainsaw.

good question

I mostly “don’t go there” 90% of the time. if i’m watching the game with my grandfather, i’d rather connect with him about things than argue

my grandfather is a relatively die hard rangers fan

i mean, he’s not at the level where he follows them at all in the off-season, or reads up on them or whatever

but he’ll basically watch 140+ games a year

The last couple summers before my Grandpa died, watching games with him was kind of sad. He had trouble understanding instant replay. i remember one game we were watching, in 05 or so, where Sweeney got hit by a pitch and they showed the replay of it like ten times in a row because he was injured. Grandpa chimes in with, “they just keep hitting the shit out of that man – give him first base already.” Funny…but sad.

Selling or buying a home now is a Cluster $%*&

Wife, kids and I moved over the holidays. Put our place up for sale and got an offer in late Dec. We were happy because the AZ housing market is in the tanks. We are actually making a profit to no weird short sale involved.

It has been one big mess after another because of law changes on Jan 1st. has cost us extra hundreds, if not thousands extra dollars.

Note to everyone, don’t be the guinea pig for the realators, loan agents, title people and wait a few months until someone else has to go through everything new. Hopefully we close next week, about 2 weeks late.

It was a really nice house and all, but since it happened to be Northern Virginia it was a million dollar home. The coasts, and then the Midwest/parts of the South. I swear if people on the coasts really understood what kind of lifestyle they could have living in the Midwest, there would be an exodus to places like Charlotte, Nashville, KC, etc. There already has been to an extent in some areas (i.e. Austin).

To answer this question

I am going to summarily exclude anything from Poz and James, because they have an unfair advantage.

So, in that light, my favorite baseball book is probably Nine Innings by Dan Okrent. Just a really, really neat piece of work, where Okrent basically writes an entire book about one regular-season game between the Brewers and Orioles. Obviously, he makes it work by expanding on everything with stories about the people involved in the game which actually have nothing to do directly with the game in question, and that’s what makes it so neat.

This space for rent.

Quick question

I may have asked this before. Beside the obvious of having Meche throw 80 gabillion pitches in a game causing him to break down. Also considering Banny got injured also.

How much of the “injury bug to pitchers” could be due to the fact that they are pitching scared? (ie I have to throw perfect, or else I’m going to lose this game )

Are they all trying to take too much on because of the lack of D behind them? In addition a lack of bullpen help except every third day.

I thought

there was a Zack interview sometime last year where he said Banny was trying to get the staff to coax more fly balls at Kauffman because the infield defense was so bad and fly balls would not necessarily turn into HRs at home. If so, then yes, I think they appreciate that the defense had issues last year.

I wrote a decent and nicely sized writeup to fit the random thread and something happened and it all vaporized. ARGH.

First, was on a plane and Mark Teahen was on it with his girlfriend and I assume her mom a few months ago.

Second, on Sunday I was in Redondo Beach walking on the streets and saw Meredith from the Office walking by. Hilarious.

Third, I have begun supplementing my royals fandom with hockey, a sport I used to hate, but now can’t get enough of. The LA Kings are what the Royals are supposed to be. Young and talented and appropriately paid. And a hell of a ton of fun .Anyone else starting to shift or supplement sport fandom around as the Royals maintain their continuous slide into oblivion.

Not actually a sport fandom switch, but possibly a lifestyle switch for me

I have a friend who is in the process of trying to acquire the bowling center here in Jefferson City, and he has asked me to manage it for him if his loan goes thru and he actually buys it.

Obviously, this would be stressful for the next 18 months (time I have until eligble to retire from State government) – but after that, this would be a dream opportunity for me to bridge the gap between retirement from the State at age 51, and “realistic” retirement at a later age, say 60 or so.

In addition, bowling is the one thing I love as much as the Royals. The sad part is that obviously I would have to give up vending the games at the K for good. I think I am OK with this, because I’m so excited about the bowling thing – but once in a while I really have a twinge of sadness thinking how much I would miss the vending and the ballpark experience as a whole.

Either way, still would try to follow the team and read this site regularly – but it could easily slip a bit in importance given the new work schedule this might entail. (Basically would have to work about 80 hrs a week for a year and a half, then perhaps a normal 40-50 hr week after that)

at least there seems to be indigenous radio

all LA sports radio is farmed out to the horrendous ESPN radio drones. There are approximately two shows that I think are produced locally. And they have terrible reception.

Which brings up a semi relevant topic…the best sports radio in the country is KNBR 680 in the bay area. Its all local talent…all of it absolutely top notch. You basically can’t go wrong tuning in from 9am to 11pm. I would highly recommend that everyone check out a couple shows over the internet if they have a chance.

by kcemigre on Feb 5, 2010 3:45 PM EST reply actions

Team Groundball? I know Team Coco, Team Edward, and Team Jacob, but what is this Team Groundball you speak of?

by AxDxMx on Feb 5, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Good point, actually..

…it may not be clear that what I’m asking for is defensive stats… not pitching stats (although, I guess you could argue they’re the same), and not hitting stats. I’m asking for defensive conversion rates for individual teams. (i.e. I know that league averages hang around 74% on groundballs and 83% on flyballs, but wonder about team numbers).

I have a Royals pennant that hangs in my room at home

got it signed back in 01 when the Royals were in town to play Oakland.

I got Paul Byrd to sign it, then managed to get Doug Henry to sign it too. I got one more no name I think, but I cannot remember who it was.

I wanted to get Dan Reichert, Jeff Suppan, Chris George, and Chad Durbin to sign it. I seriously loved those guys. I didn’t understand why they sucked so much. I was a big fan of Kris Wilson too. It was just so depressing to see them all with big fat 5’s and 6’s next to their era in the box score after every start.

I think there’s also an illegible Mike Sweeney in Sharpie on it that’s producing a purple glow around it since it was in black.

My other pride and joy autographs include a Johnny Damon/Mark Quinn(!) signed ball.

And then there’s that time I got Buck O’Neil’s auto too. Knowing what I know now, I wish I had tried to have a conversation with him.

I also have an Appleton Foxes minor league program from the early 90’s when Randa was on the team, and I think he signed it for me. So that was kind of cool.

sort of OT, even for the OT thread

but the story is vaguely relevant. we recently began using an antenna for TV (no cable, satellite, etc), so our channels are limited, but we’ve found a bunch of odd, rare over-air TV channels. For instance, each public TV station has 4 or 5 channels under their own name, listed as 50-1, 50-2, 50-3, 50-4, 50-5 for KOTC to give one example. And most networks have the main channel (NBC is 4-1) and a couple sub-channels; for NBC it’s 4-2: News/weather/traffic, and 4-3, which is the US Olympics channel. And there are a few “independent” channels that I’d never heard of before, that are kind of like UPN or WB/CW only worse. Although Family Fued is shown four times daily, if that’s your thing.
So that was the long way of saying that since we’re using an antenna for TV, we are getting the US Olympics channel (and not a whole lot else), so we’ll probably be watching a lot of esoteric Olympic sports whether we want to or not—you can only watch so much bobsledding or cross-country skiing before getting bored.

Curling for certain

Everyone should once in their life go to a sports bar and scream irrationally at a sport they don’t even understand. Curling is my favorite, because I equate it primarily with bar shuffleboard. I like the bobsled, luge, and skeleton, because they seem to take a certain kind of badass/psychotic. Speed skating has its moments, and probably is the only sport I’ve watched every cycle. Hockey’s by far my favorite, but seeing Team Canada’s lineup almost seems unfair (Since I say this, they won’t win). I remember the ’94 Olympics, mainly the whole Harding fiasco, Jansen and Tommy Moe(?) but not many moments since.

played center for SM South the year Rodney Peete moved in. His claim to fame is that Rodney touched his butt several hundred times.

It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.

my neighbors had an old bobsled

4 person, all open, steered with ropes if I remember rightly. What I really remember was how fast you could get going with 3 people pushing and how we would all bail out when it looked like death was approaching. once we even made a jump for it (what were we thinking?).

I was the backup longsnapper in high school

I only had to snap once on a punt, and it was perhaps the most frightening thing I ever did as a football player. I was so amped up that I launched the snap about two feet over the punter’s head, but luckily not out of his reach. Since it was a small school, I was also the backup punter, so if they both got hurt, we weren’t quite prepared.

I was thinking the same think last Summer Olympics

I even checked out what you have to do to qualify for the US Shooting Team—not that I’m any good at shooting, but I figured the air pistol was a sport I could learn and practice enough. It struck me as one of the few sports that you can still be in the Olympics in at an advanced age and don’t need to have a lot of capital (e.g. sailing) or raw athletic ability to participate in.

That seems like a more appropriate name.
