Grilling, Beer, and Baseball
With pitchers and catchers and apparently Billy Butler reporting in a week to Spring Training, i wanted to ask the faithful here at Royals Review a few questions.
1. What is your favorite Grill setup when the Royals are playing?
2. Got to have beer while Grilling whats yours?
3. Any certain pregame/pre-grilling ritual you put on?
4. How many times a year do you Grill/BBQ/use a smoker for Royals games?
Now i know most of the midwest is snowed or iced in right now. I got the idea this morning when i let the dogs outside and saw the good old Grill sitting there. With pitchers and catchers reporting soon, the baseball news machine is going to start gaining significant steam.
Here is my list:
1. Steak on the weekends, early in the season i get back in the setup with the basics, hot dogs and hamburgers
2. Bud Light
3. We usually have the pregame going, then get decked out in Royals gear and try not to consume to much beer before the game begins, or the Grill is done. I usually shoot for the food to be off the grill in the 2nd/3rd Innings.
4. Usually two to three times during the week depending on work, every weekend game entitles Grilling and Beer.
Cant wait to see yours! Please feel free to include any good Grilling/BBQ/smoker recipes and or tip/tricks that you have. Go Royals, Grilling/BBQin/smoking, and Beer!

All I can say is that, if I still lived back in the midwest – I’d be coming over to your place a lot in the summer. I’d even bring the beer!!!

1. What is your favorite BBQ setup when the Royals are playing?
Dogs and brats.
2. Got to have beer with BBQ whats yours?
Boulevard
3. Any certain pregame/pre-BBQ ritual you put on?
Cut the grass
4. How many times a year do you BBQ for Royals games?
Most weekends
Don't Stop Believing!
a little store here started to sell boulevard
and i have to admit that i mixed it up a few times during the season, but havent drank any since. I found it right around the time we were in first place and with the subsequent collapse that ensued the rest of the season i went back to the original beer of choice.
I may start again towards the end of the season or maybe the beginning, depending on which is bleaker!

I do not barbecue
since I am a vegetarian. Been 31 years now. Beer? I prefer good stuff, but I’ll accept standard American yellow beer like Bud or whatever. It all tastes the same if you drink it ice cold. Baseball? Not in Spain, and soccer games are always played at night. Bong hits? We got those, this is decriminalization-land for soft drugs.

I love to BBQ asparagus and mushrooms.
I bet you could stuff a pepper and BBQ that too. Or just some good ol fashioned kabobs.
I am a proud meat eater but i would try that for sure.

That works, and it's pretty tasty
especially if you drizzle olive oil over it. But it doesn’t make me want to fire up a barbecue grill.
What I do when people are coming over is buy a couple of packages of corn tortillas, cut them into triangles, and fry ‘em. There’s your chips. Then you stick some tomatoes, peppers of various kinds including a couple of fresh jalapeños, onions, cilantro and garlic in the blender and you’ve got fresh salsa.
Then you take a couple cans of pinto beans, drain them, squish them with a potato masher, dump in some Tabasco and chili powder and olive oil, re-fry them, melt some cheese on top, and you have bean dip. Then you take some avocados, peel them and cut them up, add Tabasco, crushed garlic, and lemon juice, squish them with a fork, and you’ve got guacamole.
This has never failed to please a crowd in my experience.

Do you go to the “football” games? Curious if you are a football fan or where you are at in Spain?
by Nighthawk at the Diner on Feb 10, 2010 8:43 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I'm a big FC Barcelona fan
I go to a couple of games a year, more if I can get a group together. Sometimes if you know somebody you can get free tickets. The games are always at night, and the stadium is in the middle of the city, with no parking, so there’s no afternoon tailgating. Sometimes they’re on free TV, and I watch them at home; sometimes they’re only available on pay TV, so I go down to the local bar, about 50 yards away, which has a pay-TV subscription. This is a good excuse to go to the bar and drink generic ice-cold beer, which here is called Estrella Damm. You can get this tasty double-malted stuff called Voll-Damm, but it’s 7.2% alcohol and three of them pack a pretty good punch.
The team is tremendous this season. They got eliminated by Sevilla in the Cup, but there’s no shame in that. They’re undefeated in the League this season through (I believe) 20 games, five points ahead of Real Madrid. Messi is leading the league with (I think) 16 goals. Everyone else is playing as expected except Ibrahimovic, who’s in a slump. Seydou Keita has really broken out this year, and Pedro Rodríguez has come up from the youth squad to become the fourth forward. He’s taking advantage of the minutes he gets to score goals.

Barca is the gold standard..........
Henry has always been one of my favorite strikers…….Messi is unreal. How many teams could lose Ronaldhino and not miss a beat? Glad to see they are handling Real Madrid…..AGAIN. Living in Barcelona has to be a little slice of heaven. Good food, beautiful city. World Cup time should be fun too, eh?
by Nighthawk at the Diner on Feb 10, 2010 6:57 PM EST up reply actions
It is a great place to live
even though it’s more crowded and noisier than anywhere in the US. World Cup time is a little weird around here, because something like one-third of the population are anti-Spain Catalan fanatics, and they root for Spain to lose even though several Catalan players (Puyol, Xavi, Piqué, Capdevila, Fàbregas) play on Spain’s national team.
Ronaldinho had to go. He became too fond of the Barcelona nightlife and is apparently an alcoholic. The guy missed practice nearly every day his last season here, and was lousy on the field for a full season and a half before they finally dumped him, and the coach (Frank Rijkaard) who permitted it.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
I'm an EPL guy, so I don't follow La Liga or Il Calcio that closely ......
but how is he doing at AC Milan? I’ve always thought the big club coaches have just as much or more problems managing the egos, etc…as they do with tactics. I don’t even know the gaffer for Barca? Got to be some former dutch guy, eh? I forgot about the Catalan/Spain thing….isn’t Espanol a “catalan” team as well? I would rather see Barca win the Champions League than Chelsea, Man Yoo, or Liverpool. It looks like they have the inside track….maybe Jose can work some more of his Cup magic with Inter.
by Nighthawk at the Diner on Feb 11, 2010 7:20 PM EST up reply actions
Ronaldinho
is doing barely OK at Milan. The Barça coach is Pep Guardiola, a well-known former star player who is only 38. Espanyol is a Barcelona team, but its supporters are generally pro-Spain and anti-Catalan nationalist. Fan support is about 80% Barça – 20% Espanyol.
I think Barça has a very good shot at repeating in the Champions League, though with the playoff format all you need is one bad game and you’re out. Fortunately, they don’t play bad games. They’ve got a decent lead in the Spanish league, and now the Utopian goal is to go undefeated. With 18 games left that’s highly unlikely, but it’ll be fun while it lasts.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
Cool.....I know there are a few Royals/Football fans on this board.....
We’ll have to compare notes as the Champions League gets rolling, and later this summer during the WC. How long have you been a Barca fan? I’m new to the sport, been a Middlesbrough fan for 5 years…..how I picked them as my club, I’m not sure. I like that they’re from a grimy steel town in the NW of England, and my first year following them they got to the UEFA Cup final via a string of awesome comebacks, but Sevilla blew them out in the final. I’ve always liked Barca tho….read a little bit about them, had a couple of old school dutch stars back in the day, Cruyff (as player and manager maybe in the 80’s? ) I’m also a fan of the Dutch……and US team maybe halfway decent this summer too….they’ve got a few key guys playing in Europe for a change, so the trend is good. I think Spain is prob the favorite tho.
by Nighthawk at the Diner on Feb 12, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions
Brazil's almost by definition the favorite
but Spain looks very good, certainly the best national team in Europe, with the Barça backbone of Puyol and Piqué at central defender, and Xavi and Iniesta as attacking midfielders and playmakers. Sergio Busquets and Pedro Rodríguez are likely to make the national squad as well.
Barça used to have a major Dutch presence, and Johan Cruyff is a powerful figure in club politics today. Coaches included Van Gaal and Rijkaard; players included Cocu and Kluivert (good) and Overmars, Frank and Ronald de Boer, Bogarde, Reiziger, and Zenden (bad).
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
How did I forget the Samba Kings?????
Bolo Zenden had a nice spell with Boro, I believe Reiziger had a poor run with Boro……I saw him bouncing around with a mid pack EPL team a few Saturdays ago…….what is the connection between the Dutch and Barca? History? Total Football? Something that started with Cruyff? Is Rijkaard managing anywhere? Many of the Euro managers have some serious style when it comes to clothes, but Rijkaard was always a little bit too far out there….not so much GQ as Prince’s garage sale type threads. Who does Barca have next in the Champions league? Two legged ties in March, correct?
by Nighthawk at the Diner on Feb 14, 2010 12:38 AM EST up reply actions
I'm not sure whether they've had the draw
for the CL yet, but yes, from now on it’s home-and-home knockouts with the loser going home. The Dutch-Barça connection goes back to the ’70s with Cruyff and Neeskens (sp?) and Total Football, which Barça still plays, always attacking and taking risks. Ironically, Barça now has no Dutch players, while Real Madrid has several.
Barça coach Guardiola is Mr. GQ, and he can carry it off because he’s still in playing shape and those Armani suits fit him perfectly. Rijkaard was always portrayed humorously as a Rasta pothead because of his haircut.
The Utopian dream ended last night when Barça lost 1-2 in the Calderón to Atlético Madrid.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
Correction.
The CL draw happened so long ago that I forgot they’d done it. Barça drew Stuttgart, theoretically not much of a challenge, but you never know. I believe the game is tonight, which means I’ll have an excuse to go to the bar. Real Madrid just took a whupping against Lyon.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
No bullshit I fire up my BBQ at least 300 times a year.
So what you will about gas grills, but if you buy a good one the taste difference is negligible and the convenience more than makes up for it. And as of right now I have been on a steady diet of grilled chicken and Sam Adams Noble Pils.
Pitchers and Catchers report February 17th... And so begins my masochistic addiction.
i use charcoal
but my uncle is a huge gas grill man, and i have to say the taste is very much alike. He always forewarns everyone though “hey this is cooked on gas” but i have never tasted a difference. Now 300 times a year that just plain awesome! I wish i could grill that much, i would probably put my mark around 65-85 times a year, depending on weather (massive rain and tornadoes in Oklahoma) and work.

Laike to say “We don’t care how they do it in the Lower 48”, but truthfully, when I look around me here it looks like we don’t much care how we do it here, either.
1. What is your favorite BBQ setup when the Royals are playing?
I use charcoal, and I hate Webers. Chainsaw Al did away with Sunbeam’s grills (I think that asshole is still in jail), my grill of preference. I now use a Mecco which I had to order on line and pay $70.00 for shipping. I use KC Masterpiece sauce and usually do baby back ribs and chicken.
2. Got to have beer with BBQ whats yours?
Alaskan Pale Ale.
3. Any certain pregame/pre-BBQ ritual you put on?
Basking in the Alaskan sun.
4. How many times a year do you BBQ for Royals games?
I barbecue year-round, so I have no idea. It’s not something I do special for games.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
why do you hate Webers?

They Require An
Enormous fire and are much less tractable than the square grills with the adjustable distance between coals and grill. I can’t get consistent results from a Weber, either. I guess it’s mostly what you’re used to, but I resent Weber’s dominance in the market, too.

Barbecue is bizarre. If you want actual barbecue sauce on your food they ask “Y’all wanna put ketchup on that?” And be sure to tell them you don’t want sugar in your iced tea; their “swee’tea” is basically syrup.

that is the beauty of BBQ
i didnt really pick it up to much until a few years back. My wife was watching a show and it had Bobby Flay in it out back BBQin it up. Now im not claiming to be Mr. Flay, but i just gradually took some tips from his show, i cant remember the name sorry, and used them at home. Everything he did was very “ordinary” nothing to extreme unlike some of his other shows. Lots of good tips and if you get a chance to watch it i would say DVR it sometime and then fire up your grill.
One of the best recipes we took from that show was a yellow onion, cut in half, with a tablespoon on butter put right into the middle wrapped in aluminum foil. MMMMMMM, the butter makes the onion’s bite neutral, and pretty much caramalizes it, it was so good.

Ah, bar-be-que
If I’m going to be ambitious I’ll get the smoker going early and get a pork butt ready to pull by game time. If I’d rather sleep, just hit some burgers and dogs on the gas grill. Either way, I don’t want to be fooling with it by game time—no divided attention, please.
Sadly, no beer. Or alcohol of any kind, unless I feel like committing suicide that particular day by taking alcohol with prescriptions that don’t mix with alcohol.
The smoker is a day’s ritual unto itself.
Only a few times will barbecuing be tied to a game day, once a month during the season at most.

havent yet invested in a smoker
got any recommendations, sadly i will say that i would be starting from page one when dealing with a smoker, i have never used one.
Warriors come out and play
Here we go
BBQ- We do the pork short ribs on a smoker, this is a process that starts two days in advance, so I usually only do it for a Saturday, or a Sunday game. (usually Saturday, as when the smoker comes out, so does my reflex to drink more beer) Weeknight games? Hotdogs, and Brats, usually sometimes we grind our own meat for hamburgers.
Beer- if it’s really hot, some grolsh style beer. Or just some cheep stuff. If it’s early in the season I stick with a Pale Ale I can get my hands on. There are a ton of microbrews out in the North West, so I just grab and go. I really haven’t found a Pale Ale I hated yet.
Ritual- KC hat on as soon as I get outta bed, get smoker going. Check RR for any updates. Try to have the ribs done before the game starts.

At the risk of being a BBQ snob
Unless you’re using a smoker, you’re not barbecuing. Using a grill on hot dogs, sausages, chicken, burgers is “grilling”. Barbecue is slow cooked over low heat.
I don’t BBQ for Royals games because I don’t own a smoker, but I do enjoy grabbing burnt ends from Oklahoma Joe’s and washing it down with creme soda.

Oklahoma Joe’s sells their sauce in house, not sure about online. Jack’s Stack and Gate’s can usually be found in stores in the greater KC area and I believe AB’s at more select locations. Oklahoma and Bryant’s are more true to KC bbq. JS took bbq “high class” which is an oxymoron and Gate’s is a joke to most people in KC who love bbq, and I think we can all agree that Famous Dave’s is…well neither famous or bbq.
