Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Rookie right-hander Blake Wood, a former starter, turned in a one-two-three seventh inning and is emerging as a strong bullpen possibility....

Another strong outing by Crow could prompt club officials to start viewing him as a genuine candidate for the final spot in the rotation....

"He looks good. He doesn’t look like a guy who has been out for nine or 10 months." — Royals manager Trey Hillman on Mike Aviles, who went two for three in his first Cactus League game....

I think Crow would be on a shorter leash than Gordon

but, we shouldn’t make the same mistake twice. Let him sort through any kinks in the high minors, even if it’s only for a couple months.

FIRST CUTS!

Assigned to minor league camp:

Mike Moustakas
David Lough
Ernesto Mejia
Stephen Lerud
Dan Duffy
Derrick Robinson
Mario Lisson

Thoughts

1) I had no idea that Mario Lisson was actually in major league camp

2) Moose and Lough seemed to be two of the better performers in the exhibition games so far (Moose walks…twice!). It was nice to see those performances.

That seems like a more appropriate name.

Another thought

Duffy was the only pitcher reassigned. That bullpen is wide, wide open.

That seems like a more appropriate name.

I'm Pretty Confident

We can fill out the pen from within the organization. No more random hobos, please.

I mentioned last week that I was thinking they would move Crow into the rotation.

GMDM and Trey think this team can compete for some oddball reason and I wouldn’t be shocked if they made this move.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Mar 11, 2010 1:24 PM EST reply actions

As excited as I am to see Crow

in a Royals jersey at Kauffman, I think a move like this would be a big mistake. The Nats are probably going to make a similar mistake with Strausburg and I just think these guys need to spend at least one full year in the minors to get used to the routine of being a pro baseball player and the increased talent level of the opposition. Gordon was rushed to the bigs and the stress of having the expectations of high performance has arguably ruined his career as a potential hall-of-famer. Let’s learn from our mistakes!!

by i before e except after Grrr on Mar 11, 2010 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

I tend to agree, why rush him in a season that is lost?

If it’s not lost, we could call him up in June or July and make a strong push, but no reason to have him start up here. Dominate AA, move to AAA mid-season, September call-up sounds about right.

by AxDxMx on Mar 11, 2010 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

strasburg and crow are completely different situations in my mind....

id have strasburg up as soon as you’re sure you’d get the 7th year….not worry about the super 2. He hasnt had a 2 year layoff like Crow, he’s better and he’d actually sell tickets for a team desperate for ticket sales.

As far as Crow goes, I’d have him down until the end of june at a minimum and then bring him up only if the team is somehow competing, otherwise it’d be August or September.

Perhaps I'm confused

but hasn’t Aaron Crow already spent a season schlepping around on buses for a minimal salary (and thus, by definition, learning the routine of being a pro baseball player)?

This space for rent.

by wildthang on Mar 11, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

An ideal world

If Crow forces himself on to the roster, and actually looks like he is ready to get out major leaguers on a regular basis, I would hope they would ease him in by letting him be the long reliever, instead of thrusting him straight into the rotation a la Hochevar. How many times can they make the same mistake? (rhetorical question; please don’t answer, readers!).

Another factor: he is likely to be limited to, say 130 or 140 innings this year anyway. What if they put him in the big league rotation, and he is doing unexpectedly well? Now you have another problem to deal with come July or August. Either let him be a starter in the minors, which will limit his innings due to the shorter season, or let him ease into the big leagues with a half season of long relief and THEN perhaps a handful of starts at the end of the year.

Nice to see Blake Wood doing well.

I would like to see Julio Pimintel moved to the pen as well.

know he had tommy john last year but i havent heard anything bout him yet. I remember he was in the futures game 2 years ago

The pitching

Davies and Farnsworth should NOT be considered for the rotation.

Move Crow in there and let him pitch. At the very least it will cause Hochevar to work harder knowing the team is going to give young guys a chance to pitch.

Greinke / Meche / Bannister / Crow / Hochevar

Wood in the pen.

We’re gonna see a lot of that if Blake makes the team.

And here comes the manager...

“That’ll be all for today’s starter. Hillman’s making the motion towards the bullpen calling for Wood. Hillman’s on record as saying he really likes Wood’s ability to pound the strike zone. Here comes the long, thick righty out of the bullpen now and he looks to be ready to go. This bullpen change brought to you by Viagra, ‘When it’s a big if, if you can get it stiff, Viagra!’”

Crow

gotta keep the kid in the minors for a little while—just for the service time issues.

Wood—he’s got potential—in fact, he’s got potential still to start and I’d like to see him get one more chance. His stuff will play up well in the pen if we need him too—-perhaps he could get a shot at the 5th starters job?

service time

if Crow can pitch now, let him pitch.

The Royals are a better team with a guy who throws in the 90’s with control.

No reason to put the control less Davies out there.

To what end?
if Crow can pitch now, let him pitch.

Even if they put Crow in the rotation coming out of ST, and he performs incredibly well, and doesn’t get injured or dead arm by early August, what does that get the Royals? Maybe 2 more wins? Max? (Klaassen/Gopherballs/Jeff, what’s the rookie SP record for WAR in their first season?) So they win 77 instead of 75 this year. Great. They’ve sacrificed a full year of service time for a great starting pitcher who needs to stick around as long as possible so he’ll be good and available when it might actually matter for contention.

Doesn't Crow's change up need work?

To succeed long-term in the rotation, he needs a pitch to throw to lefties. With games counting in the majors, he is going to go with his best pitches — his fastball and slider — at the expense of the change. He should be better off in the minors, at least for awhile, working on the change in games that do not count.

+100

If you want to develop Crow into a good starter, don’t put him in the bullpen. Put him in the bullpen and he’ll throw two pitches and won’t get to develop his other pitches.
