Not if they trot out this godawful lineup with any regularity

why should we be concerned

by SagehenMacGyver47 on Mar 12, 2010 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

When Kendall batting second came up

a couple of weeks ago in Hillman’s second possible lineup, I was already convinced that that’s what your gonna see on opening day.

To be fair, its only going to matter in the first inning. With Pods and Kendall at the top, the third batter in the lineup will be leading off a whole lot more innings than either of those two thanks to the number of third outs Kendall with represent.

That seems like a more appropriate name.

by CentralChamps20?? on Mar 12, 2010 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

Still have issues with this

Maybe Kendall in his 20s, but not now. Kendall’s OBP has steadily declined in his waning years. The 2nd batter still gets more ABs, obviously, over the course of a season than the 3rd-9th hitters. I guess you can always pinch-hit for Kendall in later innings as needed, but then you burn a guy off the bench unless you pinch hit with B. Pena.

Just seems to me the 2-hole is too important to throw Kendall in.

by Tito42 on Mar 12, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Then again

You have to have a more viable option in the lineup than Kendall, and I’m not sure they have that out of the projected starters. Getz’ OBP is in the same neighborhood as Kendall’s, and Yuni’s sucks hard. Would be nice to have a healthy and productive Mike Aviles in the 2-hole.

by Tito42 on Mar 12, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Kendall in the 2 hole is terrible

I think I can see some of Trey’s reasoning. While his OBP is likely to be .330 or under, I think Trey wants to hit and run and steal a lot with whoever leads off. Kendall seems to be a nice guy you could stick in the 2 hole that could accomplish contact to at least not screw the runner over on a hit and run. His productive out percentage has gone up in recent years (could be SSS), and he rarely gets a GIDP (11% rate last year and for his career, even though his GB/FB rate is .82). In summary, Kendall in the 2 hole isn’t the end of the world, plus it allows DDJ’s bat to be more productive with actual runners on in front of him. Maybe the world will recognize his value when his RBI totals approach 100 this year from the 3 hole.

Plus, the 2 hole fits Kendall perfectly as a nickname, as I think we all know what #2 is and how bad it stinks. :)

Which Begs The

Question of whether or not H & R is a good strategy no matter who is executing it.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Mar 12, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Right, but if Kendall's GB rate is so high, you'd expect more DPs than 11%

So with that in mind, Kendall has zero power, but he can influence where his GB is going to a certain extent. It will mean more hits for Kendall through the open holes on the hit and run, and a lot of first to third for the leadoff man. As much as I hate Pods leading off, if they are going to do it, you might as well bat Kendall 2nd, DDJ 3rd, Butler 4, Ankiel 5, Callaspo 6 Gordon 7. Once Aviles and Gordon prove they can hit (and Pods proves he sucks at leadoff), then the top of the lineup changes with Gordon moving up and Aviles batting 1 or 2. I also like the idea of spreading out your crappy hitters a bit, but 8,9,1,2 are gonna be pretty bad like that.

by AxDxMx on Mar 12, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

Hit and Run

If one is to say hit and run is a good strategy – then at the very least it makes more sense to use it at the bottom of the lineup instead of in front of your 3-4-5 hitters.

Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

by loyal2sdad on Mar 12, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Better for the two spot

DDJ (Butler 3rd) or Callaspo are better in the spot by a lot. There’s a thought that you give more PAs to guys who can, you know, hit.

That seems like a more appropriate name.

Mind Boggling

Why are they not playing Aviles at SS. Its as if they go out of their way to intentionally make SS have no depth, and create log jams in positions with actual depth.

by Freneau on Mar 12, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

I would think...

…it would be the dream of the Royals to have Aviles claim the SS spot, so they can option Betencort to Omaha. I don’t see the risk associated with getting him reps at SS in the spring.

Of course as the title of my first post says, anything Hillman does anymore is just plain mind boggling. I’m beginning to think if I just eat in the same restraunt as him I have a 5% chance of him looking over and thinking I can play SS.

That’s a funny juxtaposition – he had a good attitutde in his contract year. The whole contract year concept is that people perform better in their contract year so they can get paid the next year – that seems to be indicative of a bad attitutde if you’re not trying the other years, no?

Let's stop the fantasies

Yuni is the starting SS on opening day. How long he stays there might be in question, but nothing changes that he makes the opening day roster as the starter.

I’d rather have Aviles rehab for SS than start him at 2B. I don’t mind optioning Getz, but I’d put Callaspo back at 2b just to get his bat in the lineup all the time.

That seems like a more appropriate name.

by CentralChamps20?? on Mar 12, 2010 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

I listed Yuni as the starting shortstop…

Just getting the aviles versus Getz thoughts. If Aviles is on the ML roster, he can play 2b most of the time plus SS a day or two a week with Callaspo sliding over to second. Aviles getting MLB playing time at mostly 2b with some SS versus getting miLB time only at SS.
