Pictures, Videos and Comments from Spring Training 3/15a

I just got back from watching the minor leaguers play a couple of games.  We are leaving at 6:00am tomorrow and have the game tonight, so I am doing a midday update and one tonight.

Notes:

  • Mejia crushed the ball during BP.  Clint Robinson and him seem to be the biggest two players on the team
  • Moose took some fielding at 2B, but played 3B in the game.  He made a nice grab at 3B in the game
  • Minor leagues are bunting and stealing like crazy.  Don't know if it was what they were to work on today, but it seemed a little obsessive.
  • Theiot seems to have a nice arm at C.  Was getting about 1/2 of people stealing
  • Dimensions of the minor league practice parks are 320-365-400-365-320
  • Games were played on pitch counts.  I saw anywhere from 2 to 5 outs per inning.
  • Myer had a nice two bagger.

Moose took some fielding at 2B, but played 3B in the game

If he hits anything like Utley, I think he could probably stick at 2B. That’s a big if..

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

I’ve wanted him to play 2B ever since he looked like he didn’t have enough range to handle SS.

he's "athletic" enough too

but could he really?

If We Could

Try Teahen at the MLB level, why not Moose in MiLB? It’s not as crazy as the catcher idea.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Why not?

From everything I’ve read, he had good SS skills, just not enough range. That sounds like the standard profile for a second baseman. But let’s say that he’s a not very good defensive second baseman. You can still be a good player without being a good defender. If he’s a much better hitter than average for the position, and a below average fielder, that adds up to a pretty high value player (like Dan Uggla).

Yeah, and I'm not sure why Moose's body is all that different than Ronnie Belliard's

And Belliard has actually been about average for his career at second

I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs.

I think the body type physical profile stuff is the worst kind of old school, traditionalist schlock

If a guy shows the tools and skills, what difference should his body type make? Who cares if he doesn’t look like most (fill in the position)? Aviles doesn’t look like most SS’s. Belliard, Uggla and Moose don’t look like most second basemen. I don’t know why anyone should care.

Aesthetics are important

as for the stealing and bunting

seems like the place to work on it in a no-consequences setting rather than during the regular season. although not so much for the bunting if it’s taking away practice at hitting.

Zapp Brannigan/Dayton Moore quote of the day: "[my most important sabermetric stats are] runs scored and runs driven in"

Just trying to become the next Podsednik or Getz

so their future with the team is certain

That seems like a more appropriate name.

Did you get to see any of the movement on Arguelles pitches?

I’d love to know what kind of run he has on the fastball and the offspeed.

No, he was too far away.

The picture of Myers

Do you know who was at bat? The name kinda looks like Patrick Norris, who I thought was a little more filled out but does hit in a way that makes Joey Gathright look like Albert Pujols. If it’s Norris, he also makes Gathright look like Pujols compared to his slight, slight frame.

That seems like a more appropriate name.

I am not sure, but I have some more pics

I will look at them and find out.
