Pictures, Videos and Comments from Spring Training 3/15b

Not too much tonight since the game was on TV

Notes:

  • Greinke does long toss before the game.
  • The White Sox looked lost on the field.
  • Dayton is one short man

Ralph Wiggum would be a better GM than Dayton Moore

Wrong Response

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

I must be insane

I DVRed the game, and watched it all starting at 10:45 pm after getting home from bowling league last night. Suffice to say, it’s been a long winter.

Observations:

Jarrod Dyson is proof of some progress in the minors. Bear with me as I make this point. Dyson appears to potentially be Joey Gathright, except perhaps faster and with actual defensive acumen instead of perceived defensive acument. No idea if he can hit as well as Joey. My point is that Moore has been emphasizing acquiring speedy, athletic outfielders in the system – and Dyson seems to be the first and the furthest along since this emphasise began.

Now, I know what everyone is thinking – What the hell is so important about developing Gathright-esque outfielders? Well, if our G.D. GMDM has a player like this available in his system, maybe he isn’t tempted to trade a supplemental 1st round LH reliever, who turns out to be actually useful and valuable, for said player.

Heh, it’s a small point, and still doesn’t preclude other screwups by the GM – but arguably makes said screwups a bit less prevelant.

How’s that for some positive spin?

Good point

I don’t mind a Gathrightesque player so long as he’s cheap and he’s our reserve OF.

Dyson is fun to watch

Just like Gathright was fun to watch. He’ll be even more fun to watch if he reads flyballs better than Gathright. Of course the problem with both of them is that they just can’t hit or get on base very much. But they can be useful 4th/5th OFers.

One problem with Moore is that he appears to like this kind of player too much. He frequently drafts and acquires this kind of very fast OFer who can’t hit (Gathright, Dyson, Derrick Robinson, Paulo Orlando, etc.). I think he needs to adjust his focus to include more OFers who are slower but appear to be able to hit.

mix-n-match

CF defense can make up for poor hitting and also cover the less-speedy LF/RF players who can hit. it’s just about using (and as you say, drafting) these players the right way. this might actually be one area where Dayton’s old-school and WAR’s new-school could overlap.

maybe they’re not going to overlap after all

Zapp Brannigan/Dayton Moore quote of the day: "[my most important sabermetric stats are] runs scored and runs driven in"

by SagehenMacGyver47 on Mar 16, 2010 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

This is certainly true

But these guys have hit so horribly that their defense and position adjustment haven’t made up for their poor hitting. Even playing CF with good defense, Gathright projects to be a below average player. Right now, the same is true of Dyson. It is also true of Podsednik (who is actually poor defensively in CF).

The immoderate moderator

by NYRoyal on Mar 16, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, i wasn't intending to suggest that Gathright or Pods fit that mold

just that if Dyson or speedy CF-prospect-to-be-named-later could be like Gathright, only with better D to make up for the crummy bat, it might actually have value in GMDM’s system

True

It just seems like the balance is tilted towards speedy, athletic OFers, as opposed to those who can hit.

The immoderate moderator

by NYRoyal on Mar 16, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

You have to find a potential CF somehow

I like the method of gathering lots of great athletes and hoping to teach one to hit for average as a value move.

I think the odds of that working out are much better than trying to make a good hitter serviceable at CF. DeJesus was a great find but I don’t believe their are too many guys like him out there which is what makes him special. I don’t like Mitch as a starter (in the long run).

Doesn’t Hilton Richardson fall in the same speedy-guy category as well?

It's good to see ZG with the LT pregame.

But my main concern is whether or not they do it to build the arm. Not just for warm ups. But I appreciate you making a point to let me/us know ZG LTs pregame!

Defensive improvements could help him do that

The OF defense is going to be significantly improved (and could be greatly improved if Hillman put the right men at the right positions). And if the Royals play Aviles instead of Yuni and give Getz a full season at 2B, the IF defense would be pretty good too (not that I necessarily want a full season of Getz at 2B, but that is the best defensive option).

The immoderate moderator

by NYRoyal on Mar 16, 2010 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'd Rather

See Alberto “Hands Of Stone” Callaspo and Aviles, but Getz almost certainly would a better defender.

by philofthenorth on Mar 16, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Which Is Why

I’d love to see Bert get a shot In LF, but we’d need Trey’s hot tub time machine for that to have any chance now.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Yeah, but if Bert can handle LF

that won’t give KC a chance to kill his value by playing him at DH

by Matt Klaassen on Mar 16, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd love to see Callaspo in LF too

I think I like this lineup:

C – B. Pena
1B – Butler
2B – Getz
3B – Gordon
SS – Aviles
LF – Callaspo
CF – DeJesus
RF – Ankiel
DH – Ka’aihue

Bench

C – Pena
UO – Maier
U – Bloomquist
U – Fields

My #2 SS would be Callaspo. My #2 CF would be Maier.

That’s a decent, not embarrassing lineup and bench.

I especially like Pena's versatility

starting and playing the bench at the same time. We need to alter the positional adjustments to account for that sort of skill.

That would be interesting

I’m reading Bill Simmons basketball book and he talks about his conversations with Isiah Thomas and Chris Ford, both terrible GMs. Isiah actually handled himself pretty well, explaining why he did the dumb things he did, and Simmons basically says he vigorously disagree, but at least he understands why Isiah was trying to do.

With Ford, Simmons suggests “why didn’t you do this instead?” and lays out a very realistic plan that Ford could have done and he writes that Ford just looks at him like its the first time that has ever crossed his mind.
